Discovered Don and Millie’s this week. Two thumbs up!

When traveling I always like to find fast food or mom and pop joints that I don’t have back home. This week in Omaha Nebraska I found Don and Millie’s!

I had a Double cheeseburger today at one of these Amigos/Kings/Winchell’s hybrid places and it was actually pretty good..probably even better than the last several times I’ve eaten a cheeseburger at Runza (which the burgers have been quite underwhelming lately)..

I also noticed they also had a Cheese Frenche on the menu (which has always been a menu staple of Kings)…

I've always thought they had pretty good burgers. Most of the time I'd get that over the Mexican food. And the regular fries and the Mexi fries aren't bad either.

I agree..

Many of my family members absolutely love the Amigos food- other than their crisp meet burritos, I’m not their biggest fan..but that cheeseburger off their Kings menu was better than I expected. So it’s definitely added to my rotation now when I want a good, fast food burger at a reasonable price point…

Per our Arby's fries conversation, I got their curley fries, and was able to try them with a packet of Freddies fry sauce I had left over in the fridge. It was actually pretty good. I think it made a difference that the curley fries were fresh.

Every place I've gone that has curly fries, they all look and taste the same as Arby's. Who knows why?

I don’t know about curly fries-

But do you ever notice the ketchup packets, even if they say Heinz on them, the actual ketchup tastes different packet to packet at these fast food places? For example, a Heinz ketchup packet tastes different at Arby’s than it does at, say Runza..While the mustard out of the packet seems to taste the same though…

I kinda like curly fries. They have a nice seasoned flavor. But I only like them when they are crispy. And I prefer shorter ones cause they get crispier. I'm sure for curly fry fanatics, its really satisfying to get a big long curly fry, just like it is to get a big long regular fry, but for me when they're big and long like that, they don't get crispy and they are greasy. I actually prefer curly fries that don't make a full curl haha. Like the ones that fall to the bottom of the carton.

My logical guess would be its a mix between Chik-fil-a sauce and their BBQ sauce, with quite a bit of smoke flavor.

Love me some Don and Millie's... however I haven't been a regular after they dropped their Ham & Cheese Frenchee... I can't even remember when it happened, but I do recall there was a time when they'd get rid of the Ham and Cheese version temporarily during lent. I always thought that was a bit of an odd decision even though they did offer a tuna/cheese version during lent, why get rid of Ham?

In any case, it's hard for me to justify a "cheese" sandwich as a meal... it's a mindset thing I think - but if I'm going to pay $7-$8 for a fast food meal, I'd like to have something that's supposed to resemble meat. 🤣

Don & Millie’s burgers are the real star of the show. They’re the best fast food burger in Omaha imo..

Try one- it resembles more meat than a ham Frenchee ever did…

I don't know about Don & Millie's, honestly. I went there countless times between about 2011 to 2015. I definitely have a soft spot for them because of it... But I recently had a double cheeseburger from there, and as another poster said, it was really salty. Don't get me wrong, it was a good burger... I ate it and I enjoyed it, but the bun and pickles were really generic, and it was really, really greasy. Maybe I was missing the margarita haha. It kinda seemed like what you'd get at a big cookout, for free. Runza's burgers are kinda like that too... I don't know how to explain it, the patties turn out a bit small, really greasy, and the bun is really light, pillowy, and sugary, and soaks up all the grease, and the cheese is like Kraft singles, but maybe worse. I dunno... I'll call em hospitality burgers. No way in heck I'd turn em away for free, but for like $7, I just don't know.

That said, I just may get Don & Millie's here soon.

Yesterday, I had a cheeseburger at Rusty Nail on 144 and Pacific. Got to say that other than the burger being a little dry, it was tasty. Excellent fries.

After seeing your post, I made a point of going there for lunch today. I will try anything with Rueben in it. It was better and any other Runaz I have had.

Runza introduces Reuben-style sandwich

Runza has introduced a Reuben-style Runza sandwich available during March.
But is the new addition really worth the hype? Should Runza really be altering their original recipe?

We’ll, at least one YouTube video featuring it.. I’d definitely say it’s worth a try if you like anything Reuben..

I’d say it’s the best Runza sandwich I’ve ever had. Followed closely by the regular and cheese Runza…

Now that we are in Lent, most of the fast food places that didn't already have it are offering various types of fish sandwitches. Who do you think has the best one?

Last year Freddys had a fish sandwich my wife loved, and she's not a big fish eater. Unfortunatly, I don't think they're offering it this year.

I think its goofy that they all do it only at this time of the year. At least McDonalds has it all the time. I think Culver's does too. But that said, I don't think any of them are particularly good.

I had the spicy fish sandwich from Arby's like a couple weeks ago. It wasn't bad, but there was definitely room for improvement. I just don't see the big deal about all that

If I want fried fish, I will either make it myself or get some Long John Silvers.

Arby’s is okay. Popeyes spicy is okay. But Runza is clearly the best fish sandwich of this group. Chick Fil A has a great one (I assume they’re offering it this year).. I have had Culver’s in the past. It’s always good. I’ll have to check out Freddy’s..

The other places, honestly, I wouldn’t even bother…

Hmm, I heard Freddy's wasn't doing it this year... Don't know hoe true it is, but I think a batter or breading with Freddy's seasoning in it would be really good. Add some Jalapeno Freddy's Sauce on it, with a little lettuce, maybe tomato, and I am really interested. Haha, heck, even if they don't offer it, I may just get a couple sauces and seasoning packs and make the dern thing at home.

I'm kinda surprised the Mexican restaurants get little love this time of year. I don't think Taco Bell ever had a fish taco, Taco John's might have, but Taco John's blows, and Abelardo's IMO has a really good fish taco.

I may have to try out that Runza sandwich sometime this week.

I'm pretty meh about Taco Bell. Seeing as they are yum foods, I'd assume it will be similar to Long John Silver's.

The last gimmicky thing I got from Taco Bell was their take on the chicken sandwich craze. I don't recall what it was called, but I equated it to a chicken tender in some floury, bready tortilla or pita. Three thumbs down, was not good.

I doubt I'll try a TB fish taco, but I just may get a Runza fish sandwich and a Reuben Runza over the next few days.

I tried the Reuben Runza last year and was unimpressed. I love Reubens and love Runzas, but the combo was a disappointment. I suspect that it needs to be baked in rye dough.

I've always felt that Rye Bread should be named Caraway Bread because that's the dominant flavor.

That's more of an American thing to add caraway to rye breads. Though, it definitely becomes the main flavor when added.

My sister said she tried the Reuben Runza last week and it was a sloppy mess- apparently it fell apart on her..which I’ve had happen when I’ve ordered specialty Runza’s in the past (most notably, the Philly cheesesteak)..

She said it was a one and done for her…

I just impulse bought a Domino's pizza. I used their online ordering, and set it up as curbside pickup. Let me tell ya, it was real slick how that worked. I know many would scoff at Domino's, but I happen to enjoy it. The pizza was lip smacking good, and I got the garlic sauce and marinara sauce. A little bit pricey for what it is, as I spent almost $13 with tax for a 10" pizza with the two dipping sauces, but I have to say I'm satisfied. It tastes really good.

On further inspection, a comparable pizza from Mama's would have cost me about the same, but I was nowhere near Mama's, plus no dipping sauces. I like Domino's.
