Bluejay center leads the BIG EAST with 80 blocked shots

Creighton sophomore Ryan Kalkbrenner has been named the 2021-22 BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year after a vote of league coaches. The center's recognition marks the third time in the past six seasons that a Bluejay has won the award, joining two-time honoree Khyri Thomas (2016-17, 2017-18).

Kalkbrenner leads the BIG EAST with 80 blocked shots, which ranks 10th-most nationally. He's also sixth in the BIG EAST with 8.0 rebounds per league contest. Creighton leads the BIG EAST in field goal percentage defense (.400) in all games and its 67.5 points allowed per league game is second-best, with the St. Louis, Mo., native anchoring the Bluejay defense.

No surprise there. Considering how young and injured this team is, it’s a year they should get massive love and respect for finishing 20-10 and 4th in the Big East. They were projected to finish 8th before the season…

Doesn't make any sense...they thought he was good enough to win the defensive player but didn't even make one of the top 2 teams!?!

Going back to Creighton not getting any respect: Here is the Big-East Preseason ranking vs actual conference finish. In every single year the Jays have finished higher and only 2 where they tied their preseason poll. I understand a few seasons here and there, but this is 9 consecutive seasons (most of them being substantially higher than their prediction) that this has happened. I both love and hate it at the same time.

ASU was up 14 on Stanford with less than 3 min to go and lost by 1. Would have been nice for the Jays seeding if they could have won a few.

glad to have the lead at half, didn't help that Kaluma picked up his 2nd foul with over 7 min to go in the half. That call should have been a charge. Either way, someone is going to need to step up....no one is shooting well at all, although this may be the way the Jays need to win.

What a game in the 2nd half. We made 9 of our first 11 shots and then sealed the win with some good plays and defense.

Trey had a great game with 11pts, 6 rebs and 8 assts.
Kalk with 14pts and 9 rebs, including 6 offensive.
Hawk in the 2nd half was 5-6 and 4-4 from 3, with 14 pts.

What a great win, hopefully we can play better against Prov than we did in RI.

Great team win over the Golden Eagles. 3-0 Jays season sweep..

CU withstands 3 second half runs by Marquette, gets some balanced scoring, played good defense and pulled away for an 11 point win. This Jays team never ceases to impress..

Now let’s see if the White and Blue can grab a win over Providence tomorrow afternoon/evening…

Men's Basketball Routs #11 Providence, Advances to BIG EAST Title Game

A 30-2 run spanning halftime helped the Creighton men's basketball team propelled the fourth-seeded Bluejays to a 85-58 win over top-seeded and No. 11 Providence on Friday evening in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Tournament, presented by JEEP

Creighton (22-10) advances to Saturday's 5:30 p.m. Central final against either Villanova or UConn in a game that will air on FOX and KOZN (1620 AM). Providence will enter NCAA action with a 26-5 mark.

Alex O'Connell gave Creighton a 15-13 lead at the 11:34 mark and the Bluejays would not trail the rest of the first half. Freshman Arthur Kaluma scored eight consecutive Bluejay points on an array of moves as the CU margin grew to 33-25. CU then unleashed a 7-0 run, the last five from Kaluma, to grow the lead to 37-25 with 2:13 to go. The Bluejays owned a 42-27 head at the break, led by 15 from Kaluma, 11 by O'Connell and 10 points from Ryan Kalkbrenner.
