Well that's a pleasant surprise. What's also surprising is the terrible format of the map lol. The darker the color of the circle, the closer to Number 1, which makes sense. However there are no explanations for the seemingly random sizes of the circles for each city, which appear to vary quite a bit.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Mon Dec 13, 2021 8:59 am Another city ranking list. The smaller the dot, the higher the ranking. Which....yeah, that's an odd way to format......if they were going to adjust sizes based on ranking, you think the higher the ranking the bigger the dot would be?Louie wrote: Mon Dec 13, 2021 9:09 amWell that's a pleasant surprise. Lincoln #33 and Omaha #32. Outranked cities like Salt Lake City, Tampa, Boston, and DC.

Lincoln #33 and Omaha #32. Outranked cities like Salt Lake City, Tampa, Boston, and DC.
The best places to live in the U.S.
For the creation of this ranking, Niche researchers factored in good public schools, affordable costs of living, low crime rates and the overall satisfaction of their residents, culling data from the U.S. Department of Education, the Census Bureau, the FBI and public-sentiment polling.
Niche also considered local commutes (length and access to public transport); diversity (of age, gender and ethnicity); health and fitness of its residents (based on rates of smoking, alcohol abuse, and obesity as well as access to healthcare and fitness centers); jobs (including employment rates, career and business growth) and housing costs (based on home values, property taxes and ownership rates).

Omaha usually finds it’s way on to these “best city” lists..
But for goodness sakes, I’d love to see at least one publication use a photo associated with Omaha and it’s ranking, that wasn’t 15-20 years out of date..
Sheesh…

Pretty easy to outrank Boston or DC. Both have put out the "Multimillionaires Only" sign a long time ago. Regular people live like |expletive| there.
As for the photos, I agree. With all the pro and advanced amateur photographers pumping out dozens of photos of Omaha onto Facebook or other sites, one would think it would be pretty easy to get one that was at least recent.

To each his own. I have been to both places for stretches of time. Expensive housing and long commutes. If you have the bucks to live in the close in areas that are nice, like Alexandria and you can have the 10 min, 1 train commute directly to your office, it’s great. If you are a middle class guy and you are in the outer burbs, it’s going to be different.Doctor Fate wrote: Tue Dec 28, 2021 3:34 pmI have family in both places who would disagree. Restaurants are good in DC, but aside from seafood, Boston has a weaker scene than Omaha.

The 6 Best Multifamily Architects in Omaha, Nebraska
Firms and projects highlighted:One of the largest cities in the U.S., Omaha attracts many for plenty of reasons. Warren Buffet’s so-called home, the city of Omaha houses major employers including four Fortune 500 companies. For this reason, the city has a low unemployment rate and is one of the most recession-proof cities in America. Despite a big demand for housing due to its large population and booming economy, the city remains one of the most affordable places to live in the country. Because of the city’s low cost of living, the demand for housing increases even more.
Due to this demand, many are encouraged to build more multifamily buildings in Omaha. This city contains excellent architects who help developers design the best possible multifamily residential spaces for families and young professionals. The list below includes six of the most well-established architects in the area. All these architects are award-winning and are members of the American Institute of Architects. Each has received a considerable amount of press. In the industry for one to five decades, all architects on this list are proud of their portfolios. Their portfolios showcase expertise in providing architectural services for condominiums, mixed-use developments, apartments, and townhouses.

- Alley Poyner Macchietto Architecture - BOS Apartments
- Sinclair Hille Architects (Lincoln) - Larson Building
- Holland Basham Architects - Swivel

Rents will skyrocket in these 10 markets this year
Despite what the title says, they also list the 10 cities with the lowest expected rent growth of 2022. And guess what, Omaha is at the bottom at 1.7%. They don't go into specifics for the 10 lowest, but attribute low expectations generally to the following:Over the past year, the apartment industry has experienced one of the strongest runs anyone can remember.
After the multifamily industry struggled because many residents were unable to pay rent due to COVID-19 in 2020, the market stormed back in 2021, with 673,000 units rented for the year, according to Richardson, Texas-based data analytics and property management software provider RealPage. That beat the previous high in units rented in 2000 by 66%.
"The recovery was the quickest I've ever seen," said Steve Hallsey, executive vice president of operations for Atlanta-based Wood Residential Service, who has been in the apartment industry for almost 40 years. "I've never seen demand as strong as it is right now."
But there are deeper issues than the pandemic in some Northern markets that are projected to have lower growth in 2022.
"Many of these markets are found in the Northeast and Midwest of the country, both of which are facing an aging population and experiencing outmigration," Freddie Mac said in the report. "Three of the bottom 10 markets are located near New York City, which is intuitive because the pandemic impact there has been meaningful since the onset of COVID-19."

That's certainly surprising to see. Perhaps there is enough residential development across the city that we are keeping pace with the needs for housing.ita wrote: Thu Feb 03, 2022 11:38 am Rents will skyrocket in these 10 markets this year

The Abrahams branch of the Omaha Public Library system was mentioned in a recent CityLab article about relocated artwork by mid-century sculptor Harry Bertoia. The sculpture in the library's entry, called Sunburst, was initially commissioned for the Perpetual Savings and Loan building in Beverly Hills, where it stood out front inside a fountain. The Perpetual Savings and Loan building listed as a historic place by the Los Angeles Conservancy.

Forbes Ranks Mutual of Omaha 25th Among Best Large Employers Nationwide
OMAHA, Neb. (Feb. 17, 2022) – Forbes magazine has ranked Mutual of Omaha 25th on its prestigious list of America’s Best Large Employers for 2022. The Forbes ranking also recognizes the company as the top large employer in the insurance industry as well as the top large employer based in Nebraska.
“We are honored to be recognized by Forbes as one of America’s Best Large Employers,” said Liz Mazzotta, Chief Administrative Officer. “Our people are our greatest asset and the heart of our company, and we strive every day to be a company where all employees feel welcomed, valued and inspired to achieve their full potential.”
The Forbes ranking is based on a survey conducted by independent research company Statista of 60,000 Americans working for businesses with at least 1,000 employees. Survey participants are asked how likely they are to recommend their employer and are asked to rate their companies on factors such as working conditions, development opportunities and compensation.
The Forbes list includes rankings for more than 500 public and private entities across dozens of industries. The full list of “America’s Best Employers” and more information about its methodology are available at forbes.com.

Not really a lately reference, but I finally got around to watching the movie Michael Clayton, a really good watch if you are into corporate corruption dramas. The fictional ag product conglomerate in the film was headquartered in Omaha and there were a couple of quick shots of the skyline.
Off topic, but idk how I went this long not seeing this really good movie. It just strengthens my belief that 2007 is the best year in cinema ever.

But how do we measure the effectiveness of local leadership? One way is by determining a city’s operating efficiency. In other words, we can learn how well city officials manage and spend public funds by comparing the quality of services residents receive against the city’s total budget.
Using that approach, WalletHub compared the operating efficiency of 150 of the largest U.S. cities to reveal which among them are managed best. We constructed a “Quality of Services” score made up of 38 metrics grouped into six service categories, which we then measured against the city’s per-capita budget.

I haven’t watched the show as much as I used to but I knew they were in Omaha last summer and wondered when the footage might air.Uffda wrote: Wed Jan 04, 2023 8:25 pm Tonight, I was watching the show American Pickers on the History channel and they were ‘picking’ in downtown Omaha at what they labeled Larry Land. I researched it and it was Larry Richling, who owned the Hollywood Candy store. I think this was the first show of the new season.

According to this Business Insider article, Elkhorn was (on average per day) the 8th most visited website on Zillow.
The 11 neighborhoods Zillow users are most obsessed with
Methodology:
"HouseFresh collected Zillow sales listings from 100 of the most populous cities in America and identified each home's neighborhood, the number of days it spent on the website and its total page views. The company then calculated the amount of page views per day for each listing and averaged the number of daily views across each neighborhood."

Cool urban heat island video on CNN with a UNL professor and someone from an architecture firm called Smith Group. Starring Omaha as the test city. Though it looks like a few images aren’t from Omaha, most are.
