Mavericks Take Another from Nebraska

For the third time in as many meetings, Omaha's game with Nebraska came down to the final pitch.

There was no walk-off hit this time. Instead, Maverick reliever Harrison Kreiling struck out Husker slugger Colby Gomes with the bases loaded to preserve a 6-5 win on Wednesday at Tal Anderson Field.

Boeve Homer Caps Thrilling Win at Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan. – On a day when Omaha's bats were making noise, it's loudest one had been silent. Mike Boeve, the Summit League's batting leader and reigning conference player of the week, was 0 for 4 with a walk as the Mavericks entered the final inning at Hoglund Ballpark Tuesday trailing Kansas 10-9.

Boeve's two-out, two-run home run off Kansas reliever Kolby Dougan – into the teeth of wind howling in at up to 40 miles an hour – gave Omaha a thrilling 11-10 victory in a wild back-and-forth midweek battle.

The final result gave Omaha a nonconference win over a Big 12 opponent in a season in which had already beaten teams from the Pac-12 (UCLA), Big East (Creighton) and Big Ten (Rutgers and Nebraska).

Boeve Nabs Second Weekly Summit League Honor

For the second time this season, Mike Boeve is the Summit League Player of the Week. The sophomore third baseman posted back-to-back four-RBI games this weekend as Omaha wrapped up its fourth consecutive series victory by shutting out Northern Colorado 10-0 Saturday and 7-0 Sunday.

Boeve homered in both of those games and hit .438 (7 for 16) for the week. His RBI single in his first at-bat Wednesday sparked a three-run first inning that carried the Mavericks to a 6-5 win over Nebraska.

He currently leads the Summit in batting (.388), on-base percentage (.533), OPS (1.232), runs scored (30), hits (40), doubles (14), walks (24) and being hit by a pitch (eight). Boeve also claimed the Summit League's first weekly award of the season.

Dominant Pitching Brings Early Omaha Success

Not long ago, Payton Kinney was the ace of the Omaha staff in the midst of an All-American season. Now, he's a third-year pitching coach for his alma mater overseeing a staff with that kind of potential. Heading into this weekend's series with North Dakota State, the Mavericks rank 41st nationally in team earned-run average. Starter Caleb Riedel's 0.83 ERA sits third, individually, and reliever Joey Machado's 1.34 comes in 14th. Starters Charlie Bell (2.50) and Mark Timmins (2.77) are also in the NCAA's top 115.

Boeve Named Summit League Player of the Year
Riedel, Denk and Timmins Also Receive Honors

To no surprise, Mike Boeve was named Summit League Player of the Year on Tuesday. Also not surprising was the way Omaha's star third baseman shrugged off his conference's top honor. "It's nice to see the recognition but, obviously, we're worried about the conference tournament," Boeve said. "We want to come out on top with a conference tournament title at the end of the day."

Summit League Tournament Postponed for a Day

Omaha Blasts Top-Seeded Bison to Open Tourney

Due to continuous rain in the area this week, Omaha waited an extra 27 hours to take the field at the Summit League tournament. The Mavericks then wasted little time in piling on the top seed. Omaha (25-29) scored six second-inning runs and never looked back in its 10-2 pounding of regular-season league champion North Dakota State (30-18) in the opening game at J.L. Johnson Stadium.

Starter Caleb Riedel struck out seven batters while pitching a season-long eight innings to push the Mavericks within a win of the tournament final. They play their second-round game at 6:05 p.m. Friday. Riedel, who lost a 1-0 decision to the Bison and NDSU starter Max Loven earlier this season in Omaha, didn't change his demeanor with a big early lead. He leaned on his fastball on a day his slider was off.

Mavericks Fall to ORU in League Tournament
Omaha Faces NDSU in Elimination Game Saturday

Omaha put forth a valiant effort to battle back from a big early deficit against Oral Roberts Friday. But now its season will be on the line on Saturday at the Summit League tournament.

The Mavericks will face top-seeded North Dakota State in a 4:05 p.m. elimination game after their rally came up short in a 12-8 loss to the Golden Eagles in a winners-bracket contest at J.L. Johnson Stadium.

Omaha Advances to Title Game by Ousting Bison

After Omaha's Friday loss to Oral Roberts, Jack Lombardi told his teammates Saturday wouldn't be their last day at the Summit League tournament. Then he did his part to make sure of it

Lombardi drove in two insurance runs that ended up being the difference as the Mavericks beat top-seeded North Dakota State for the second time in three days to advance to Sunday's championship.

Omaha (26-30) will have to beat Oral Roberts twice on its home field to claim the title and an NCAA tournament berth following its 5-3 win over the Bison (31-19) in a tight game that it led the whole way.

Mavericks End Season in Summit League Final

As only the seventh No. 4 seed to advance to the Summit League championship game, Omaha had a tough task ahead of it knowing it had to beat Oral Roberts on its home field twice Sunday. After all, the Golden Eagles entered the championship having won the tournament title in each of the 14 previous times that they've entered the final day as the lone unbeaten team left in the event since 2000.

Only one No. 4 seed has ever won the tourney. North Dakota State claimed the championship as the four-seed in 2014, when ORU had left for a brief stay in the Southland Conference and regular-season champion Omaha wasn't eligible for postseason play as it was in its final year of transition to Division I.

It's weird that 4th seeds haven't done better in the Summit. Heck, Michigan as a 5 seed won the Big 10 tournament this year.

Boeve Garners All-Region Recognition

Mike Boeve landed on the ABCA/Rawlings Central All-Region Second Team, the organization announced Monday afternoon. It marks the first All-Region award for the sophomore third baseman. The recognition comes after being tabbed the 2022 Summit League Player of the Year and First Team All-Summit.

Boeve led the Mavericks at the plate hitting .364. He totaled 78 hits, including 23 doubles and eight homers. Boeve strung together a 29-game hitting streak spanning from April 3 to May 21. In eight of those games, he tallied at least two hits. Boeve also led the Mavericks in total doubles (23), home runs (8), runs scored (26), and stolen bases (13). He was second on the Omaha squad with 33 RBI. Often a leader for the Mavericks, Boeve also found himself at the top of the league and ranked nationally in several categories. His 20 doubles currently ranks 20th in the nation. He's 27th in the NCAA with a .491 on-base percentage. Boeve also cracked into the top-100 with a .364 batting average.

Lombardi, Boeve Tabbed Academic All-League

Jack Lombardi and Mike Boeve were named Academic All-League Monday, the league announced. It's a first-time honor for both players. Lombardi boasts a 3.81 GPA as a business administration major. Lombardi was second on the team hitting .297 over 54 games. He totaled 60 hits, including 13 doubles, two triples, and two homers. Lombardi added 22 runs, 30 RBI, and eight stolen bases. The Park Ridge native ranked 10th in the league with 60 hits. He put together a 14-game hitting streak spanning from April 22 through May 14. He notched at least two hits in 14 games, including a season-high four hits in a win at Kansas on April 12.
