2 gates on the inside right are at a bit of a choke point.

Re: Omaha Eppley Airfield
The design image currently being used shows three extra driving lanes that would be currently where part of the South parking garage is. I'm curious if that would be used as departure drop off. The south garage has elevators to the second level walking bridges. It would be similar to what I've experienced at DFW when getting dropped off by their car rental shuttle. Or opposite of Atlanta or Miami from their rental train, I think you go up a level or two to get to the train so coming back for departures you go down to ground level.jjjjhskr wrote: Tue Apr 05, 2022 12:49 pm I can’t wait to see what the final design is, hopefully something impressive. It seems a bit short sighted to only add 2 gates to start with. Also, it wouldn’t surprise me if the final design has a drop off ramp to the 2nd floor for departures.
I think using those lanes for departure traffic would certainly be viable

My own opinion is that sometimes it's the most convenient airport to my destination in the New York area. On the other hand as with many other large airports it can be a zoo and while renovations are nice you can nail antlers on a mouse and it's still a mouse. Put another way, it's still crowded and terribly inefficient.
Does a $600 million upgrade come with a cool 3D rendering/video as well? Or do we only get top view 2D versions?

I know there have been posts already, but GrowOmaha newsletter also had a quick write-up on Eppley.
https://growomaha.com/weekly-market-rep ... il-7-2022/
They noted the terminal project will nearly double the size of the existing terminal and is expected to take 4 years to complete.

Maybe I missed somewhere that says otherwise, but the departures roadway could be on a second level (opposite of what you wrote but usually how airports are arranged) that is built on top of first level interior space, creating a tiered effect that would appear that departures and arrivals are on the same level on a plan view rendering. Seattle is built this way (https://goo.gl/maps/DXRVZAnTizHyUn2y8) and St. Louis's terminal 1(https://goo.gl/maps/hJxTr3zgpBGpYSKLA)Stargazer wrote: Fri Apr 08, 2022 2:03 am I didn't see it mentioned, but with ticket counters moving to the second level and that ramp I see they've been working on, is the thinking that we'll eventually see second level arrivals and first level departures?

Re: Omaha Eppley Airfield
I was recently at the Detroit airport and it made me think about the future Omaha airport. I had some time to kill and had a chance to walk around both terminals. One, the larger one, is for Delta and Air France, the other is for the rest, Spirit, United, American, Southwest, Jet Blue, Royal Jordanian, Lufthansa, Frontier, Air Canada and Alaska.
Anyway, the Delta terminal obviously has more amenities and is more aesthetically pleasing. It also has a Westin Hotel connected to it.
The North Terminal is rather boring. It's efficient but looks wise it's not much.
Both terminals are newish. The Delta Terminal opened in 2002 and the North terminal in 2008.
While walking around I thought about Eppley. I remember when the current configuration opened and how it was amazing compared to the prior terminal.
Fast forward to now. So far the Omaha Airport Authority hasn't seemed to be concerned with aesthetics and the statement it can make to visitors to Omaha. I keep harping about the Oklahoma City Airport and how it really does make a statement. I understand that funding is crucial to the Airport Authority and I applaud them for being fiscally responsible. However, renovating or reconstructing an airport is a once in a generation ( usually ) opportunity. I hope that the new renovated terminal will express a positive and pleasing impact to visitors.

Terminal space is doubling in size but it seems rather thin and congested. Maybe it’s better in renderings but I don’t see much improvement on making an announcement, “Welcome to Omaha”. Seems more like an easement of processing or operations to me.

Re: Omaha Eppley Airfield
It is a bit difficult to tell from the limited images that are available and I don't now that we have a final rendering yet, but I would agree that it doesn't look very wide..maybe 1.5 to 2x as wide as the current walkways to the terminals. Based on satellite imaging that would put most of the new terminal walkway area about 50-60 feet wide. The existing terminals appear to be roughly 100 feet wide and that looks to be pretty consistent with the rendering for the far north and south ends.Damtheplatte wrote: Sat Apr 09, 2022 9:45 pm Terminal space is doubling in size but it seems rather thin and congested. By satellite comparison it looks like Denver's terminals are about 150 feet wide down the wings, Atlanta appears to be about 75 feet or so and LAX is about 120 feet roughly.
Denver has the moving walkways so they probably needed to be wider. Atlanta doesn't and it can be crammed at times. Omaha rarely has a ton of incoming or departing flights at the same time so they probably don't need 100 feet of width the whole length of the terminal. That and they are constrained by the roadways on the west and the taxiways for the planes on the east.

Appreciate the lookups on widths. It’s actually thinner than I initially thought.
Anyone make the mistake of parking on the wrong side of the garage? Heck even just went to the wrong terminal? Or wanted food from the other side? I’ve wished more than once there was a moving walkway between them as it is now. I guess I don’t see why they don’t have something with more presence away from the airfields. Feel like there’s space to make it work.

No disagreement here on running into those speed bumps today, but I think those issues get mostly ironed out with the combined security gates being in the middle of the terminal going forward.Damtheplatte wrote: Sat Apr 16, 2022 8:27 pm Appreciate the lookups on widths. Re: Omaha Eppley Airfield
It is a balancing act, but they're no where near utlizing the current 20 gates they have either so I can totally understand not adding extra gates in the near term. Everything about the expansion is demand driven from the gate capacity to the funding via passenger surcharges. It would surprise me on the latter as the space isn't there to make it happen. It also hasn't been in the plans for some time either...jjjjhskr wrote: Tue Apr 05, 2022 12:49 pm I can’t wait to see what the final design is, hopefully something impressive. They're essentially redoing the entire terminal...nativeomahan wrote: Thu Apr 07, 2022 10:01 am $600 million just to add 2 friggin’ gates? What am I missing here?
The ramp is a quick ramp to upper levels of the parking garage. The plans for seperate arrivals/departures roads have been abandoned for a while and the decision to build the new parking garage the way they did pretty much eliminated their options to do something different.Stargazer wrote: Fri Apr 08, 2022 2:03 am I didn't see it mentioned, but with ticket counters moving to the second level and that ramp I see they've been working on, is the thinking that we'll eventually see second level arrivals and first level departures?
If anything happens I think this will be it. They were quoted with a ridiculously high percentage of passengers entering the airport from the upper level departure floor during the initial terminal construction stories pre-pandemic. The only way I see that possibly making sense is something like this.Bearcat06 wrote: Fri Apr 08, 2022 8:32 am The design image currently being used shows three extra driving lanes that would be currently where part of the South parking garage is. Re: Omaha Eppley Airfield
The problem at Eppley is that with the parking garages where they are at, they effectively boxed themselves in and don't really have the space to do separate levels.TitosBuritoBarn wrote: Fri Apr 08, 2022 11:58 am Maybe I missed somewhere that says otherwise, but the departures roadway could be on a second level (opposite of what you wrote but usually how airports are arranged) that is built on top of first level interior space, creating a tiered effect that would appear that departures and arrivals are on the same level on a plan view rendering. Anything they've released up to this point is purely conceptual. The actual designs weren't due until the end of the year when they paused the project in 2020. I expect at some point this year they'll release actual designs that we can dissect.Damtheplatte wrote: Sat Apr 09, 2022 9:45 pm Terminal space is doubling in size but it seems rather thin and congested. I see that space is limited but I think with some out of the box thinking and integrating the garages it could be done.Mr.Nuke wrote: Sun Apr 17, 2022 12:09 pm

I've always been impressed with how Tulsa has separate arrival and departure lanes both on one level. Obviously Omaha doesn't have the space Tulsa has and couldn't do what Tulsa has.

It could, but...riceweb wrote: Thu Apr 07, 2022 11:13 am I think we've discussed it here before, but even 2 more gates can mean substantially more flights and destinations.
Correct, which in turn makes it a great time to do this as gates are going to have to be shuffled at various phases of this project. But, with two completely empty gates and some of the existing gates being used once a day if that, there is seemingly excess capacity right now for increased frequencies, new destinations, or even a new carrier/s to enter if they wanted to. I don't know that if you build it they will come is necessarily wise for an airport strategy wise. What 22 gates does is give you more time to grow into the new facility before going straight to 26.riceweb wrote: Thu Apr 07, 2022 11:13 am We're nowhere near utilizing the total capacity of our existing gates,

Another aside, it was good to see the feasibility of a FIS being discussed publicly by the airport for the first time in the W-H article. We'll still have to see if anything has changed since the last time it got shot down here.

The anticipated uptick for March travel when compared to prior years.
Mar '22 is running about 83.28% of the traffic versus 2019 numbers. I don't think it's fair to compare 2020 numbers since the world came to a halt that March.
For the year so far '22 is at about 82.55% of the 2019 numbers and estimating that out; my forecast for 2022 numbers is roughly 4,146,866 passengers through Dec 31st. (I'll update monthly with the new numbers)
Historically this would translate closer to 2015 passenger loads which hit 4,169,467 for the year.
Obviously things could change depending on the economy or any resurgence with Covid, but we'll see.

So United deleted their placeholder OMA-SFO schedule for the fall with a daily mainline A319 morning flight over the weekend. This seems to make me think if it books well, it will actually operate vs just getting deleted again and again. Did same thing for MCI to SFO. Omaha got a 730am departure, Kansas City got a 3pm departure.
Both decent times.

Looks like KETV is running a story on Eppley tomorrow night on the 10pm broadcast. Teasing it for air travel as a result of the pandemic, airline prices and terminal modernization.

Can you explain the Omaha-SF flight? Are you saying they are scrapping the weekday but keeping a weekend nonstop or no nonstop at all? What does fall mean as in dates? Asking cause I go there frequently.

That post isn't worded optimally... United currently doe not fly directly from Omaha to San Francisco. The route was dropped during the pandemic. As of this week, starting on September 6th, it appears United intends to operate 1 daily nonstop flight to and from San Francisco. I do agree with Joelo that this one does seem more promising given they changed the plane to a mainline aircraft (surprising to me...). With that said, this route has been pushed back "monthly" for nearly the entire pandemic. I'll believe it when I see it at this point.blueblood wrote: Wed May 04, 2022 8:14 pm Can you explain the Omaha-SF flight? United is my main airline, but I ended up booking several flights through California via AA because of that issue. They really need to get that flight going again. It allows me to book OMA->SFO->xxx but I'm not going to take the chance of the route being pushed back again and have to do OMA->DEN->SFO->xxx which is what they are selling for dates before Sep 6th.Mr.Nuke wrote: Wed May 04, 2022 9:51 pm As of this week, starting on September 6th, it appears United intends to operate 1 daily nonstop flight to and from San Francisco. I know that I can route via Chicago or the west coast, but many of my flights are in the fall/winter time and it's so much easier flying from California and not have to worry about snow delays. Come on United.

Eppley's Terminal Modernization Program is officially taking off again, with design efforts resuming after a pause during the pandemic.

The KETV story did explain it better, but the World Herald article from 4/5 said "next year" the terminal modernization program will begin with construction potentially "run(ning) through 2027." So it is basically the same timeline.ita wrote: Fri May 06, 2022 8:38 am Did we have this timeline already? Anyway, I am glad it is moving forward.

Question - flying into Omaha for the first time in 3 years next Tuesday and picking up a rental car. Are the rental car counters on the first level of the garage now? I have never had to pick up a rental at Eppley before, usually just jumped on the Budget transport to their parking lot.

Are the rental car counters on the first level of the garage now? I have never had to pick up a rental at Eppley before, usually just jumped on the Budget transport to their parking lot.

The idea is that you may have to go back upstairs but you do not have to ride a bus to the rental center, go outside, walk around outside trying to find your car, etc. I'll take that bargain anytime. I've spent far too much time waiting for the car rental bus, waiting outside for it, riding for a few miles in the bus, shlepping outside to find the car. Seriously it's a much better arrangement.Louie wrote: Fri May 20, 2022 8:59 amYeh, not ideal I supposeUffda wrote: Fri May 20, 2022 7:46 amSo pickup luggage on ground level and go back up. Ok. True true. So more ideal, but not perfect.Bob from Omaha wrote: Fri May 20, 2022 9:20 amBob from Omaha wrote: Fri May 20, 2022 9:19 amThe idea is that you may have to go back upstairs but you do not have to ride a bus to the rental center, go outside, walk around outside trying to find your car, etc. I'll take the new OMA arrangement anytime. It is what it is . At Tampa International, you use to pick up your luggage, go outside, cross the traffic to the rental car counters and then take elevator to car. Now you get your luggage, take escalator back up to the level you arrived on, find the tram that will give you a ride out to the now separate rental car parking ramp - about 5-10 min ride. Find your rental car company, check in, get keys and then take an escalator down to where your car is parked.Louie wrote: Fri May 20, 2022 8:59 amYeh, not ideal I supposeUffda wrote: Fri May 20, 2022 7:46 amSo pickup luggage on ground level and go back up.
