TCU guard Francisco Farabello commits to Creighton
The Horned Frog transfer will continue his career with the Blue Jays after three seasons in Fort Worth.

TCU guard Francisco Farabello announced Sunday evening that he will be continuing his career with the Creighton Blue Jays. Farabello, who spent three seasons with the Horned Frogs, entered the transfer portal last month and has two years of eligibility left.

Farabello made an immediate impact at TCU with his 3-point shooting, appearing in 30 games during his freshman season and shooting 41 percent from beyond the arc. While injuries limited him to only nine games as a sophomore, Farabello took the floor for 34 games this season, averaging 4.7 points and 2.5 rebounds per game.

A 6-foot-3 guard from Argentina, Farabello will join a Creighton basketball team that reached the Big East Conference Tournament finals and the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Farabello averages 4.4 points on 40.2 percent shooting for his career.

Some huge news. Just found this from NBC Sports-

“Villanova men's basketball head coach Jay Wright is reportedly "likely" stepping down from his job with the school after an illustrious two-decade career that included two national championships, four Final Four appearances, and two Naismith Coach of the Year awards.

The Athletic's Shams Charania initially reported Wednesday evening that Wright was "seriously contemplating" retirement and would meet with his family before making the decision.

But shortly afterwards, Charania reported that Wright was "likely" retiring and then pointed to Fordham University coach Kyle Neptune as Wright's successor”..

This is huge news..not just for the Big East, but college basketball in general..

I know he’s been at Villanova for 21 seasons, but I really didn’t see this coming. It doesn’t shock me..But it does surprise the he!l out of me..

I wish Jay Wright well. He’s a class act…

Wow, that is huge news about Jay Wright....didn't expect that at all. Besides McDermott, Wright and Cooley were my favorite Big East coaches.

Does this make Greg McDermott the longest tenured coach in the Big East?

Actually I just checked and McDermott started in 2010, Cooley started in 2011 with Providence, so McDermott is in fact the longest tenured coach in the Big East now.

The Sun’s Arizin: Get To Know Your Big East Head Coaches
With three new head coaches coming to the conference, how well do you know the leaders of all 11 teams?

Greg McDermott, Creighton

Did you expect McDermott to be the second most experienced coach in the Big East? Me neither. But just because he hasn’t stacked up the titles and post season success like some of these other coaches, don’t be too quick to dismiss him. Jay Wright was a guy that couldn’t get it done until he did... and that was just six years ago. McDermott is coming into the season with what could be argued as one of his best teams ever. He returns almost everyone from a team that persevered through big losses to end the season. They lost their star player and point guard but still managed to reach the Big East Tournament Finals. Then they lost the Big East Defensive player of the year, only to take the eventual National Champions in Kansas to a 1 point game in the final 2 minutes. Both of those players are back this season, and there’s a really good chance Greg McDermott’s squad gets voted #1 in next seasons Big East Preseason Poll.

Commissioner Val Ackerman’s Statement on the Retirement of Jay Wright

“In a conference where the list of iconic coaches runs long, Jay Wright has stood apart. For more than two decades, he has led with class, dignity and an unbridled determination to keep ‘basketball schools’ at the top of the college sports world. His mastery on the sidelines has been matched only by his effectiveness as a teacher and mentor, and a generation of Wildcat players have him to thank for his tutorials about attitude, authenticity, family, the importance of a college degree, and life in the real world, both on and off the court.

Without question, the ‘new’ BIG EAST would not be where it is today without Jay and Villanova leading the way. We have had no better ambassador over the past nine years, and we're eternally grateful for Jay's guidance as we've sought to preserve our proud history and maintain our success during the modern era. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to him on his extraordinary accomplishments and Hall of Fame career and wish him, Patty, Taylor, Colin, and Reilly only the best as their next chapter unfolds.”

Jeff Goodman raised his pre-season ranking for Creighton for next year.

6. CREIGHTON
BACK: C Ryan Kalkbrenner (Jr., 13.1 ppg, 7.7 rpg, 2.6 bpg), PG Ryan Nembhard (Soph., 11.3 ppg, 4.4 apg), F Arthur Kaluma (Soph., 10.4 ppg, 5.4 rpg), G Trey Alexander (Soph., 7.4 ppg), G Shereef Mitchell (Sr., 3.5 ppg), G Rati Andronikashvili (1.8 ppg), F Mason Miller (redshirted)
GONE/LIKELY GONE: F Ryan Hawkins (13.8 ppg, 7.8 rpg), SG Alex O’Connell (11.8 ppg, 5.3 rpg), F Keyshawn Feazell (3.1 ppg), F Modestas Kancleris (0.2 ppg, transferred)
ADD: G Ben Shtolzberg, PF Jasen Green, G Francisco Farabello (TCU, 4.4 ppg)

The losses of both Hawkins and O’Connell will hurt, but Greg McDermott could return everyone else of note from a team that nearly beat Kansas in the NCAA tourney without Kalkbrenner and Nembhard.

Just saw that Creighton landed Frederick King, that is a huge get. He originally commited to Louisville but decommitted after a coaching change there. He is 6'10" 220 lb from the Bahamas.

Now I am really, really excited for new year with a backup for Kalk!

Big man ranks as nation's No. 133 recruit per 247Sports

Fredrick King, a 6-10, 220-pound center from Mangrove Cay, Andros, in the Bahamas, has signed a national letter-of-intent to play basketball at Creighton. Head coach Greg McDermott announced the signing on Friday, April 20, after the big man also took visits to BYU, Georgia Tech and Utah. King is ranked as the No. 133 recruit in the latest 247Sports rankings of 2022 prospects, joining fellow incoming Creighton freshmen Ben Shtolzberg (No. 157) and Jasen Green (No. 184).

Creighton just added the highest transfer available in S. Dakota St transfer Baylor Scheierman from Aurora, NE.

He averaged 16 pts and 7 rebs a game last year and shot 47% from 3.

This is another huge pickup for the Jays. Just love what the coaching staff has done to bring in these huge additions. There is going to be a lot more pressure this year no doubt, so hopefully they handle it, but there is also going to some guys with great experience and provide more depth to a team that really needed an extra guy or two last year.

He chose Creighton over Duke, Clemson, Arkansas and Nebraska.

Baylor Scheierman, No. 4 in ESPN's college basketball transfer rankings, commits to Creighton Bluejays

South Dakota State transfer Baylor Scheierman, arguably the best available player in the portal, committed to Creighton on Tuesday. Scheierman, a Nebraska native, chose the Bluejays over Nebraska, Clemson, Arkansas and Duke.

I also saw that he is staying in the NBA pre-draft and there is a small possibility that he could remain and not return to college hoops, if he does, he is Creighton's!!!

With Baylor Scheierman’s Transfer, Creighton Can Stake Claim for Preseason No. 1
The lone remaining hole on the roster was an extra guard, and coach Greg McDermott filled it with perhaps the best player in the transfer portal. Scheierman’s elite shooting touch (he made 83 threes at a 47% clip in 2021–22), high-level playmaking ability (4.5 assists per game) and impressive positional size at 6'6" earned him NBA interest last season on a South Dakota State team that won 30 games and reached the Big Dance.

And with Scheierman now in tow, the Bluejays have a legitimate case to be the No. 1 team in preseason polls. Ranked No. 7 in SI’s Way-Too-Early top 25 released in early April, Creighton’s combination of returning production, experience and top-end talent positions it as one of the nation’s elite teams in 2022–23.

This is all just so crazy. I remember when Dougie was here and getting Top 15 in the pre-season polls and I was ecstatic. This is a whole new level and by far the most complete team that Creighton has ever had. Hopefully everyone brings the same energy and hunger.

Creighton was good before, but Baylor Scheierman can make the Bluejays elite
It isn’t guaranteed Scheierman will end up with the Bluejays, but that is the most likely scenario. He was not invited to the NBA’s pre-draft combine — an indication that he is not seen by the league as a likely first-round pick — but he will participate in the G League Elite Camp in Chicago on May 16-17. From there, Scheierman will work out for as many NBA teams as he can to boost his stock. He has until June 1 to decide what he wants to do. “If he feels like he can get guaranteed money, he’ll stay in the draft,” McDermott said. “We understood that going in.”
Basically sounds more than likely he will come to Creighton since he wasn't invited to pre-draft combine.

Also mentions that Reef is going to be cleared to play by June.

Pretty funny I was reading on the Iowa basketball forum and they are talking about Creighton being a Top 5 preseason team next year and whether Creighton is a better job for basketball coach than Iowa. As far as pay, Iowa is probably better, I am pretty sure that Fran makes more than McDermott, but I can gladly say as far as fan support and donor support specifically for basketball Creighton has moved leaps and bounds and would be considered a better job. I think so many people forget that Creighton is playing in the Big East and no longer in the Valley. Creighton averages far more fans than Iowa (there are quite a few weekday nights where Iowa is lucky to have over 10,000 fans in attendance) yes I know there immediate market is much smaller than Creighton's but still pretty sad for a major D1 program to struggle to sell tickets.

On a separate note, the fans are also talking about Omaha, thankfully some of them have visited recently and realize the growth that Omaha has seen in the past decade and that it really is becoming a very hip, urban town. But the funny part is some of the people from small-town Iowa are commenting on how backwards Omaha is. Just makes me laugh. I actually grew up a Hawkeye fan, but after living in Eastern Iowa for a few years and seeing people's attitudes about Omaha, that quickly changed. Some of them have been to CB and think all of Omaha is just like CB, I have lived in both and can honestly say, there are good and bad parts of both. For someone from these small Iowa towns to be laughing at Omaha is actually really comical.

Part of the hawk fans being upset is Creighton and Iowa were in similar positions after last year, both losing key players and having to replace them. They both did a good job this past year, but Creighton continues to impress with getting transfers and new recruits, while Iowa struggles to get recruits and just recently lost a high transfer to Mississippi of all places.

Both Creighton and Omaha have come a long ways especially in the past 10 years. Anyone that has visited either recently would same the same thing. I am proud to be a resident of the Omaha area and also a Bluejay fan and I would take this any day of the week over being a Hawk fan.

I think a lot of people still lump their perspectives of Omaha with rural Nebraska. Which couldn't be further from the truth.

Greg McDermott talks Baylor Scheierman, Creighton's preseason rankings and more
By Tom Shatel | Omaha World-Herald

Outside, the noise is building. One national college hoops pundit has Creighton men's basketball ranked No. 3 in his way-too-early top 25 for the 2022-23 season. Another has the Jays at No. 4. There's lots of love for Creighton as a preseason top 10 team. The Jays will be a trendy pick to go where no Jay has gone before. Now add the nonconference schedule, which includes a stacked Maui Invitational that may be stronger than anything CU faces in March.

That is good to hear that Nembhard, Shareef and Kalk are all healthy.

I really like Mac’s attitude towards everything…he doesn’t want any guys with baggage.

Hoiberg on the other hand takes anything he can get and look where that has gotten him. Sure you might find that diamond in the rough but as a fan base you want steady and Teddy Allen type players aren’t going to cut it.

The Jays released the roster numbers for the new incoming players for the 22-23 season: (all returning players are keeping their same numbers)

No 0: Jasen Green
No 1: Ben Shtolzberg
No 5: Francisco Farabello
No 33: Frederick King
No 55: Baylor Scheierman

King is the first Bluejay to wear #33 since Bob Portman in the 68-69 season, it is one of the Creighton retired jerseys, but Portman gave the ok for King to wear it.

Men's Basketball Unveils Uniform Numbers For 2022-23 Roster
Bluejays carry high expectations into 2022-23

The uniform numbers for the 2022-23 Creighton men's basketball team were unveiled on Thursday.

All 11 returnees will be back in the same uniform from a year ago, including freshmen redshirts Zander Yates (No. 10) and Mason Miller (No. 13). However, the Bluejay faithful will have five numbers to get adjusted to this winter. The No. 1 jersey will now be donned by incoming freshman guard Ben Shtolzberg, with center KeyShawn Feazell having graduated and recently signing to play in Finland. The No. 5 uniform will transition to TCU transfer Francisco Farabello, rather than Alex O'Connell, who has stayed busy working out with NBA franchises during the past six weeks. The No. 55 will now be seen on the back of South Dakota State transfer Baylor Scheierman after the departure of Modestas Kancleris.

Freshman forward Jasen Green can be found wearing No. 0, a jersey last worn by Antwann Jones during the 2020-21 campaign. The biggest surprise of them all? That'd be the No. 33 that freshman Fredrick King will wear, becoming the first Bluejay in that number since Bob Portman was smashing scoring records more than 50 years ago during the 1968-69 campaign.

PLAYERS MENTIONED
#0 Antwann Jones, G 6' 6" 220 lbs Sophomore
#55 Modestas Kancleris, F 6' 9" 208 lbs Freshman
#5 Alex O'Connell, G 6' 6" 185 lbs Senior

NBA: Nebraksa’s McGowens to the Hornets, Creighton’s O’Connell signs with Kings

After one year with the Huskers, guard Bryce McGowens was picked in the second round of the 2022 NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves, ultimately landing with the Charlotte Hornets via a trade. Picked 40th overall, McGowens was the Huskers’ highest draft pick since Tyronn Lue was taken 23rd overall in the 1998 draft.

Out of Creighton, guard Alex O’Connell signed with the Sacramento Kings. O’Connell helped lead the Bluejays to the sweet sixteen last season and to the second round this season. The 6-foot-6 guard can score from all over the court, recording 21 dunks and 66 buckets from beyond the arc in his final collegiate basketball season.
