Golly, wouldn't you love to live around that. It looks like the smoke was mostly blowing to the south, but I swear I smelled a weird chemically smell last night in North Omaha. After watching all those videos, it easily could be the case. I wouldn't be surprised if the whole city was affected.
Was there any word on what it was burning?

Re: Massive Fire - Nox-Crete, 1415 S 20th St.
Right, I'd like to know exactly. "Chemicals for working with concrete" doesn't do it for me. I want to know names and compositions of each. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I heard in passing they stored 89 different chemicals. Any one of which could be harmful. I mean even a common lighter fluid, gasoline, or house fire puts out stuff you definitely don't want to breathe. So for them to say "nothing harmful", I just can't buy it.ricko wrote: Tue May 31, 2022 7:09 pmThat was my first thought. Any news about exactly what chemicals were involved. I find it disingenuous and irresponsible that not one city official (OFD spox excepted) has provided any information on the toxicity of the chemicals and any possible harm to the public. I would think Nox-Crete would have an inventory of those chemicals and what the levels of toxicity they have. Shameful

How the lead industry misled the public about its toxic problem for decades
The lead industry characterized lead poisoning as a problem of poor people and minorities to protect its sales during the 20th century
Lead is a dangerous neurotoxin. Researchers have known that for decades. But the substance stuck around in everyday products like paint and gasoline for decades. One big reason: The lead industry spent years using racial bias to divert public attention away from the dangers of the toxin and minimized the impact of mounting evidence indicating lead was poisoning children, with devastating effects.
Health officials warn that there is no safe level of lead in children. Gerald Markowitz is a history professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and the City University of New York. He’s also an expert in occupational safety and health. In 2002, he co-wrote “Deceit and Denial: The Deadly Politics of Industrial Pollution,” which describes attempts by the lead industry to deceive Americans about the dangers its products posed to the public.
As part of The Missouri Independent and NPR Midwest Newsroom’s collaborative investigation of high levels of lead in children in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska, reporter Niara Savage interviewed Markowitz about the lead industry’s tactics and the lasting implications for public perception and policy.

The name is just bad in hindsight... Nox-Crete. In other words, Noxious Concrete. I think this could very well end up being a very bad environmental disaster.

“I’m Still Gasping For Air:”
Chemical List Released after Nox-Crete Fire, Residents Still Concerned
After more than a week, Nox-Crete disclosed what chemicals were in its warehouse that burned down,
but local investigations are ongoing.
When Nancy Valentino stepped outside to smoke a cigarette the evening of Memorial Day, she didn’t expect to see anything out of the ordinary. The residents on 19th and Dorcas streets heard pops, but they all assumed they were firecrackers. Then she saw black, billowing clouds of smoke.
“There was all that smoke over those trees,” she said looking south toward the charred remains of the Nox-Crete chemical warehouse about 2,000 feet from her home. “There were car crashes because they had to detour traffic. I was concerned about what was in the air. I have grandkids in the house.”
On May 31, Nox-Crete Manufacturing reported a three-alarm chemical fire in its warehouse near 20th and Woolworth streets, which houses concrete sealant chemicals. It took more than a week for the Omaha company to provide a list of what chemicals burned in the fire, despite making one days earlier, and local agencies are still determining potential effects.
“We want to obviously keep people abreast of what we know,” said Owen Lasswell, Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy (NDEE) public information officer. “We can only release information when we have something to share based off of factual data. That would be information observed in our reports, information posted or public records documents.”
The NDEE received Nox-Crete’s hazardous material inventory for chemicals with volumes greater than 4,000 pounds the afternoon of June 9. The inventory report was taken on May 27. NDEE is still completing its assessment of the area following this new information. In an interview with The Reader, NDEE officials had “no comment” for the delay in releasing the list of the chemicals.

Cleanup at Nox-Crete fire site to begin Tuesday
Cleanup is slated to begin Tuesday at Omaha's Nox-Crete plant, nearly three months after a massive chemical fire broke out on Memorial Day. Nox-Crete received two approved cleanup permits with the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy along with Omaha's Planning Department. It's expected the cleanup effort will take roughly three to four weeks to complete. Flames broke out the evening of May 30. Residents between 13th and 20th streets from Leavenworth to Martha were urged to evacuate as crews battled the chemical fire throughout the night.
