I'm okay with that. I like it better than the last two. Half the time I wish they'd quit trying and just go back to a plain old solid color like plates they had in the early 1900's-1960's. They have missed at least half the time. They only remotely started to get creative in 1968. Here's a fun look at the history of our license plates:

2023 Nebraska License Plate Design
KRVN Video
Governor Pete Ricketts and First Lady Susanne Shore revealed the design of the next general issue Nebraska license plate. The design is a mosaic pattern depicting the Genius of Creative Energy and is based on artwork inside the Nebraska Capitol Building.
The original “Genius of Creative Energy” mosaic kicks off a series of mosaics around the Nebraska Capitol, all working together to relate the State’s history to the ideals of Western Civilization. Designed by world-renowned artist Hildreth Meiere in 1927, the Genius brandishes a lightning bolt in his right hand and is propelled across the sky by harnessing the power of the four elements.
The license plate design pays homage to this Genius and all the mosaics in the Nebraska Capitol depicting Nebraskans’ shared story. It was designed by Nebraska-based brand and design consultant Drew Davies. “I'm deeply honored to have the opportunity to design a license plate celebrating the creative energy of all Nebraskans," Davies shared.
“I want to thank the countless Nebraskans who have come to us with ideas and feedback over the years,” said First Lady Susanne Shore. “Ultimately, we found a design that every Nebraskan can relate to. I especially want to thank Drew for unleashing his creative genius to depict our state’s own.”

There is never universal acceptance of plates (and I'm no exception) but I wonder what societal/sociological reasons there are for that.
My .02 USD: Look a little like the current KS plates. And a lot like the GSA (government) ones. I think the 2011-16 goldenrods were the best, but these new 'uns will work.

I like plates with subtle references to state symbols or landmarks, but this is kind of an obscure one. Regardless I like the design.

Re: Nebraska License Plates
It's an obscure Nebraska reference for sure, but the messaging/idea is solid & forward-thinking once you read some backstory on it. The NEBRASKA font is a little strong, and sure some different colorways would have been good - but from a design standpoint it's good. Modern, clean, blends with any car color, and for police - legible.
I do think we need some more modern specialty plate options, like clean energy, tech, etc - more progressiveness and promotion of what our state is capable of in addition to agriculture, ranching, conservation, etc. Even a blackout plate like Iowa's would be fantastic!

Hmmm. I probably would have picked the sunset over chimney rock. In fact I’m really confused why that one wasn’t favored. Second choice would be the Arbor Day one.Brad wrote: Thu Jun 02, 2022 12:46 am This article by the Nebraska Examiner shows some of the rejected plate designs…

The plain black one feels like a copy of Iowa who copied California. Although I can appreciate the simplicity.

Re: Nebraska License Plates
The Honey Bee one is the best graphic-design wise, it's bold and unique. I'm also surprised the sunset one didn't make it, it's sort of a nod to the one used during Ben Nelson days, but it does connect our rural heritage with the urban areas well. First Lady said something about being restricted to 2 colors by state code (weird code, but maybe it's a legibility thing), so I guess sunsets are out unless you want a super-simple one. We should have a dark design specialty plate, Iowa's had huge success with theirs - but of course we should make it our own - something like this:

Re: Nebraska License Plates
Watch now: New license plates unveiled, will depict renowned Nebraska Capitol mosaic
The mosaic was the creation of Hildreth Meiere, a renowned American muralist whose artwork adorns Radio City Music Hall and St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City. "It embodies the spirit of Nebraska," Shore said, in its depiction of energy. Meiere received the gold medal in mural decoration from the Architectural League of New York for her designs at Nebraska's Capitol. "It's kind of a cool thing that we've got things in Nebraska that you may not expect," Ricketts said.
Capitol Administrator Bob Ripley described the mosaic as "a great piece of Nebraska fine art." Drew Davies, owner and design director of Omaha-based Oxide Design Co., which fashioned the license plate design, described the choice as "a winner."
Shore said Nebraska's license plate will be incredibly unique and she recognizes in advance that it's "a state sport in every state to criticize license plates." But, she said, she believes it will become "a very beloved license plate." The new license plate will be issued beginning in 2023 and remain attached to cars and trucks for the next six years.

I’m basically a civil libertarian at heart. But I don’t see anything wrong with using this technology to help solve serious crimes. People have the right to privacy in their own homes, but once you step out into the public arena, whether walking down a public sidewalk or driving down a public roadway, you lose your expectation of privacy to a large extent. You have no right to complain if someone (anyone) takes your photo, or a picture of your vehicle. You don’t have to like that fact, but you need to accept it.Coyote wrote: Wed Aug 17, 2022 2:37 pm Omaha city leaders considering license plate reader proposal

For me, the issue seems to be the frequency of errors on these cameras and the difficulty in getting the ticket reversed when issued in error.

Re: Nebraska License Plates
I get why some people might not want a front license plate (like if its a really nice car), but also having experience in security, the lack of a front plate is a tip off, as I'm sure it is for police officers as well. Not always, but a lot of the time, those without a front license plate also don't have a rear license plate, and don't have temporary tags, so unlicensed. Dead giveaway they're up to no good. So pardon me, but due to my background, I kinda think people without a front license plate are half up to no good. Have at it.

Re: Nebraska License Plates
It seems to be mostly people with premium label vehicles that are opting out of a front license plate (probably because they don't want to mess up that fancy wrap-under grill that comes all the way down and under the bumper). Though, now that I am aware of the decals I have been looking for them and I am not seeing them. Seems like a lot of people have just decided they're not going to put a front license plate on their car AND they're not going to pay $100 for the decal.

Re: Nebraska License Plates
Despite being a car guy, I've always thought it was weird that may other car people are so against front license plates. I certainly see the value in them, if for nothing else than making a walking version of the license plate game easier to do.
Now I own a car where they didn't really put much thought into front license plate placement, despite originating from a country requiring front license plates. The car doesn't even come with the front bracket mounted. You're supposed to do it yourself (or make the dealership do it), and properly placed, it is off-center because the grille is vertically oriented and cuts straight into the lower bumper. That's all to say I don't currently use a front license plate.

Re: Nebraska License Plates
Of course its not an exact science. I understand many have a legit reason not to have one, and one of those reasons is you don't like the look... But some cars, I mean come on. Just a few examples I see around quite a bit are (and I don't know why half I point out are all Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, maybe we're onto something) Dodge Charger or Challenger, Ram, Chrysler 300, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Wrangler, both the V6 Camaro and Mustang. Many of them are mildly to heavily tricked out. So it does come across a little ostentatious not to have a front license plate in that regard because those aren't that nice of cars.

Rejected by the Nebraska DMV:
How specialized license plates are processed
Nearly 4,000 vanity plates have been rejected over the years.
It didn’t take long for folks to see what the state sees: vanity plate requests that are rejected. Some are simply obscene...others are just odd. Every year, DMVs from across the country try to stay one step ahead of the public. Sometimes, one gets past them. From “zombie killer” to “slutty” -- “sumbech” to “texas sux” -- “old fart” to every variation of this you can think of...just a few of the 4,000 license plates rejected over the years by the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles.
Betty Johnson is with the vehicle records division. Every year, the Nebraska team evaluates around 15,000 vanity plates. They examine them in reverse, upside down, searching for hidden meanings. “We do on occasion have one slip through,” Johnson said. “Typically how that happens is someone in the public contacts us and says, ‘Do you really want this message on a plate?’” Next time you apply for a vanity plate, keep in mind, the DMV has a forbidden list. And if you don’t get what you want, there’s a plate for you.

Re: Nebraska License Plates
There's been a few states where the ability to put profanity or suggestive language on a plate went to court and was upheld as a 1st Amendment right (so long as it didn't incite violence, etc.). Maine was one, but I think they've recently reversed on that. California was another.Coyote wrote: Thu Feb 23, 2023 1:08 pm It didn’t take long for folks to see what the state sees: vanity plate requests that are rejected. The current Nebraska plates for Douglas, Sarpy, and Lancaster counties follow the "LLL NNN" format. So, the other day I was driving and saw a plate beginning with VAG. I then chuckled at the realization that someone is out there driving around with "VAG 069" as a license plate. I'm a child. I know. I presume they skipped certain 3-letter combinations where it was profanity, close to profanity, or that looked like an abbreviation for a racist slur.
I wonder what the plan is once "ZZZ 999" is issued.

There are approximately 225,000,000 license plate combinations in the "LLL NNN" format. Even with the strictest of pearl-clutching standards to remove some questionable combos, I think we'll be just fine.
