Sounds like she wants a more permanent spot., most likely as a libero. It's a definite loss but I understand why she chose to go. Will be interesting to see if she also goes to Long Beach State.

Nebraska volleyball gets commit from No. 1 national recruit Skyler Pierce

Nebraska's 2024 recruiting class started off with a bang Sunday, when the No. 1 prospect in the nation, according to one scouting service, committed to the Huskers. Skyler Pierce, a 6-foot-2 outside hitter from Olathe (Kan.) Northwest, committed just four days after the NCAA allowed college coaches to start making phone calls to the 2024 class. She’s ranked No. 1 in the nation by Prep Dig. PrepVolleyball.com ranks Pierce ninth. Her club program, Dynasty, has several top-30 recruits in the 2024 class and won a national championship last summer. This summer, Pierce was selected to a tryout camp with the U.S. junior national team.

John Cook: Adding UCLA, USC will make the Big Ten volleyball's 'super conference'

When the Pac-12 teams join, it will mean 11 of the NCAA championships since 2006 were won by teams in the Big Ten. Penn State, Nebraska, UCLA and Wisconsin have each won titles since then. “It’s going to be a great challenge to be in that conference with those two teams coming in,” Cook said. “You’ve got most of the national champions in the last 15 to 20 years have been won by Big Ten teams, or UCLA or USC.” Nebraska has faced the Bruins five times during the NCAA tournament and the Trojans three times. Next winter, the coaches will begin to work on how the league schedule will work with 16 teams. The league currently has a 20-match schedule with at least one match against each league team.

No match at PBA

Athletic Director Trev Alberts asked Cook to consider playing a match at Pinnacle Bank Arena to accommodate a crowd of up to 15,000, but Cook says that won’t be happening this season. The Huskers are playing Creighton on Sept. 7 at CHI Health Center, which can also accommodate more fans vs. Nebraska’s 8,000-seat venue. “We’re going to Omaha, so there’s our big arena in Nebraska,” Cook said. “Maybe next year we’ll look at it. Trev would like us to, but we only get so many home matches, so we try to take advantage of playing over here.”

Back overseas

The plan is for Nebraska to take an overseas summer training trip next year. Nebraska’s last trip was in 2019. “We’re pretty open to where we want to go, but the plan is to go next year,” Cook said. The coach said the preference would be to go to NU’s regular destinations of China and Japan, but they can find a new spot if there are travel restrictions due to COVID-19. Many college programs travel to Europe.

John Cook says Nebraska was willing to go over scholarship limit to keep Kayla Caffey

Kayla Caffey at one point wanted to play for Nebraska volleyball this season. And coach John Cook said at Big Ten media days on Monday that the Huskers wanted Caffey, too. But the two sides never got on the same page. Caffey announced late last week she is entering the transfer portal to play her final year elsewhere. Last winter, the NCAA granted Caffey a waiver to play this season, but Nebraska never said for certain she would return, though she did practice and spend time with the team during the spring and summer. In an Instagram post last week, Caffey said, if she stayed at Nebraska, she wouldn’t be able to have one of the scholarships for the fall semester and that she learned of it just a few weeks ago. Cook disputes that.

He says Caffey had a spot on the team — and a scholarship — if she wanted. But Caffey never announced her return “We were fully committed to her financial situation," Cook said. "She had everything covered." Last season, Cook asked Caffey if she wanted to come back, and she said she would. “Our compliance people went through months of work to get her that seventh year, (of eligibility)” Cook said. “It was not a done deal. It was very complicated. They worked hard to get that passed. “They also hit us with a year penalty if she was going to play at Nebraska that we could take this year or next year. So we continued to have discussions and I double-checked with Kayla and said, ‘Are you sure you want to do this because this is going to cost us a lot?’ And we were fully committed to two scholarships for her over two years for her to play her super-senior year.” Cook asked Caffey why she wanted to come back, and she responded that she wanted to help Nebraska win a national championship. “Things continued to unfold,” Cook said. “We made a couple appeals and things changed, but by May it was all worked out and the ball was in her court. As far as I knew she was coming back. I was waiting for her to do her announcement, which all of these transfers do. It’s like going through recruiting again. We were waiting for that and it never to help Nebraska win a national championship.

From Shatel's article today on Cook:

In the case of Caffey, Cook ultimately said she would not have been on scholarship and was working on an NIL deal to cover expenses.

Shatel: John Cook's views on NIL help explain his comments on Kayla Caffey

And that it’s “sad” that the attitude has “infiltrated” college sports. He pointed to the movie about the 1980 U.S. Hockey Team and playing for the name on the front of the jersey, not the back. He added, “All I know is at Nebraska volleyball we’re going to recruit kids who want to play for Nebraska and that’s what they’re here for and that’s what they want ... “If there’s things that come along with that, with NIL and other opportunities, great. But that’s the most important thing. I hope I’ve got a group of kids — we start next Tuesday — that they’re playing for the name on the front of the jersey.”

You could hear the gasps all over social media.

In the case of Caffey, Cook ultimately said she would not have been on scholarship and was working on an NIL deal to cover expenses. Apparently there was a better deal to be had somewhere else. Hey, that’s the NIL world.

Nebraska volleyball team announces captains

The Nebraska volleyball program announced on Tuesday that seniors Madi Kubik and Kenzie Knuckles and sophomore Lexi Rodriguez will serve as team captains this season. Knuckles was also a captain last season, while Kubik and Rodriguez will each serve in the role for the first time. Each of the players were key to the Huskers having one of the best defenses in the nation last season. This summer Rodriguez was a captain with the United States junior national volleyball team. Nebraska Sweeps Pepperdine, Finishes Perfect on Opening Weekend
The No. 1 Huskers have yet to drop a set during the young season

A little bit of a challenge for No. 1 Nebraska on the second day of the 2022 campaign. After not allowing more than 16 points in a set in either match Friday, the Huskers were pushed by Pepperdine to the tune of the Waves scoring at least 19 all three sets Saturday. Still, NU came out with another sweep: 26-24, 25-19, 25-22.

Up next is the Husker Invitational. Nebraska takes on Loyola Marymount Thursday and Ole Miss Saturday. The two visiting teams will play each other Friday.

No. 2 Texas volleyball tops No. 7 Ohio State again on opening weekend

Texas tops Ohio State again, wins 3-1 on Saturday

No. 2 Texas made easy work of No. 7 Ohio State in the final set of Saturday's win, 25-13. The Buckeyes sputtered in the third and fourth sets with team hitting percentages of .050 and .000, respectively. After making just nine hitting errors in the first two sets, they nearly doubled that amount over the final two.

Texas' Logan Eggleston once again led the team in points with 22.5 thanks to 18 kills and a hitting percentage of .222. Madisen Skinner starred with 17 kills and a hitting percentage of .312.

Texas takes over No. 1 spot in Week 1 Power 10 volleyball rankings

What a wild (interesting?) Week 1 in college volleyball. No better way to start the season than with a plethora of unexpected, or maybe expected, upsets. Baylor took down the reigning national champions, Wisconsin, in a five-set, point-for-point, thriller after losing the majority of its core from last season and star hitter, Yossiana Pressley. Texas took down Ohio State in two consecutive matchups. No. 12 UCLA was upset by Utah State, No. 11 Kentucky was defeated by Marquette, San Diego took down the No. 6 team, Pittsburgh, and more.

1 Texas (41) 1575 2-0 2
2 Nebraska (23) 1552 3-0 1
3 Louisville 1414 3-0 4
4 Minnesota 1404 2-0 5
5 Georgia Tech 1235 2-0 9
6 Wisconsin 1227 1-1 3
7 BYU 1056 3-0 10
8 Ohio State 1038 0-2 7
9 Baylor 1001 1-1 16

Huskers Unveil New Offense in Sweep of Loyola Marymount
Options at setter mean decisions for coach John Cook

Nebraska volleyball coach John Cook continues to utilize the nonconference slate to experiment. Last season, that meant several losses but ultimately resulted in a national title match appearance. Now through four matches, NU has yet to use the exact same lineup and on Thursday even debuted a new offense. Nebraska fans have become accustomed to the Huskers running a 5-1, meaning there is just the one setter playing all the way through the rotation. Against Loyola Marymount, Cook unveiled a 6-2. The No. 2 Huskers stayed perfect at 4-0 on the season by sweeping the Lions 25-17, 16, 17. It would seem the 6-2 worked for the hitters with six getting at least nine swings.

No. 2 Nebraska Volleyball Stays Perfect in Sweep of Ole Miss
The Huskers are primed for an in-state showdown at Creighton next week

Another night of volleyball at the Bob Devaney Sports Center; another sweep for Nebraska. The No. 2 ranked Huskers (5-0) welcomed their former player and assistant Kayla Banwarth with a warm welcome ahead of the match before battling her Ole Miss squad to a 25-13, 23, 21 sweep. NU has yet to drop a set this season.

Next up is the first road test for the Huskers. Wednesday in Omaha, Nebraska will take on No. 17 Creighton (4-1). The Bluejays have a win over No. 25 USC but fell Saturday to No. 16 Kentucky.

Nebraska's Cook: "Volleyball is a state treasure."
Record crowd expected to see Nebraska vs. Creighton on Wednesday

Creighton University expects to set a record with the Bluejays host the Nebraska Cornhuskers in a much-anticipated volleyball showdown Wednesday at CHI Health Center Arena. Creighton, ranked 17th in the nation faces No. 2. Nebraska at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 7th. As of Monday, more than 14,000 tickets were already out according to Creighton University. So the match likely will set a record for the largest regular-season volleyball-only crowd in NCAA history.

"For the state, this is a celebration of two nationally-ranked volleyball programs," said Nebraska head coach John Cook. "Volleyball is a state treasure here and it's a great example for all the young kids playing, all the high school teams playing, just to see how important volleyball is here." Creighton enters the match with a record of 5-1. The Huskers are undefeated and has failed to lose a set so far this season.

No. 2 Nebraska Falls to No. 9 Stanford
Huskers have not beaten the Cardinal since 2008

Two titans of college volleyball faced off Tuesday night at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. With a combined 14 national titles and several of those coming against each other over the years, the history and rivalry was on full display for the more than 8,300 in attendance to see No. 9 Stanford upend No. 2 Nebraska in four sets: 27-25, 25-22, 19-25, 27-25. It was the Huskers' first loss of 2022, dropping them to 7-1. Stanford improved to 5-2.
