Based on the current mesoanalysis data, visible satellite and latest short range models, this area south of Omaha has the potential of seeing a few strong/severe storms over the next several hours (IMO anyway). Damaging wind and hail are the main threats.

I realize the SPC outlook disagrees but the parameters are in place if temps aloft can cool some (which it looks like they will as a trough pushes in).

Not a huge threat but certainly potential.

I will always take a nice and gentle rain just for the ambiance. But as far as sticking power goes, this system aint cutting it. A pretty big disappointment really, when they were talking 2-3 inches, and yet again, the storm tonight all but bit the dust to the OmaDome, AGAIN.

Wonderful evening tonight for Omaha in July. A quick 2 day break from the heat. I could take about a month of this weather. It Looks like the heat returns on Wednesday and it will be dry as well.

Not looking forward to the foreseeable future. I will enjoy tomorrow as thoroughly as I can. Outside right now is decent with the north breeze and declining temperatures and dew points. Tomorrow will be wonderful in comparison to the past week and upcoming two weeks. It's the best day at least. 87 is still hotter than I like, but at least the dew point is low enough there won't be a heat index.

Quite the interesting little storm out in the Waterloo/Valley area about 8am morning. Bright Sun, Rainbows, Lightening Bolts, Thunder, and Heavy Rain. And it blew through in a matter of minuets...

What a boring stretch we're in... I checked to see our chance of rain and thunderstorms tomorrow, and I won't be holding my breath. The most interesting thing I saw was that despite today being the hottest day of the weekend, the wind is coming from the north. Then it switches to straight out of the east. Kinda different for this time of year. Then by Monday it's back to straight out of the South. Sunday should be the best day of the week.

Saturday with the clouds was much welcomed, it kept the temps down slightly . I think it was the first cloudy day we've had in a few weeks. It Rained a little Saturday evening in SW Omaha but probably less than a 1/4 inch.

Looks like much of Omaha got some pretty decent/much-needed rain last night with some areas getting over an inch total based on radar estimates (areas shaded in pink). Areas in blue/green generally saw at least a half inch of rain. Next several days include at least some chance of additional rain as well (though most will probably occur at night like last night)...

Yeah, it was totally surprising given they had us at just a 20-30% chance. I went outside and I could see striations illuminated by the very frequent lightning. Just before it started pouring rain and I went inside, I literally said to myself "I bet you my life savings that is severe warned". Went inside and turned on the TV and boom! Severe thunderstorm warning. Too bad I made that bet with myself haha. It was an amazing amount of rain where I am. I wouldn't doubt it was approaching 1.5". Eppley recorded .41", so a little "meh" for the records.

It really was quite the power packed little storm, and totally unexpected! I'm very happy it happened, I was getting downright desperate for some kind of weather.

The other remarkable thing about that storm I noticed was the size of the raindrops. In the beginning when there were just a few drops, I noted they were very heavy and very voluminous. I only got hit by a handful of drops and I was wet, quickly.

Wow, some pretty impressive severe thunderstorms out west. Might stay just north though... We might get clipped by a severe thunderstorm warning, but we will definitely get some rain (knocks on wood).

Double WOW, I just checked the forecast, and on Monday the high will struggle to reach 75! That's a huge change from what they were saying just a few days ago. Bring it on!

WOW, now we are gonna struggle to maintain 70 for a high! NWS shows us at 69 degrees all day. That is about 20 degrees below normal.
That has me wondering what the record low high is for today and July in general. It can't be too far off.

Windows will be open today. I'm ecstatic! But Bill last night said next week we will return to a stretch of mid and upper 90s.

Well, that fell through... It ended up warmer than they predicted. 76, 77, 78 or so. Too warm for windows during the day for me. But maybe tonight. Kinda disappointing, but I can't really complain, its a welcome brief departure from upper 90's.

When checking Omaha's weather stats, Yesterday's high of 77 was the coolest day we've had all month. And one of only 3 days this month when the high reached 80 or less.

Funny thing was it still felt pretty hot to me. There were moments last night where I caught a small breeze and it sort of felt like fall. But during the day I really didn't get that feeling. Its still pretty humid, and the lack of wind at all kinda limited how cool it felt.

Even though it was cooler, it still didn't get as cool as I was hoping cause it was still 72 at 10 or 11, and no breeze made me keep the windows closed and the AC on. I tried it, didn't work. I can't wait til we get down into the 50's and 40's for a low.

Holy cr@p! You weren't lying... Lambert Airport reported 9.04" of rain from 11pm last night to 3pm today. Unreal! That beats Omaha's all-time record for an event. I remember our second-most rainy event... In August of 2018, I think we got 8.46" over the course of like a half a day.

Now we're talkin'. The low for tomorrow night into Friday morning is supposed to be 60. And the temperature at about quitting time for me is to be about 69 or 70, with dew points in the 50's. I'll be forever grateful for nights I can come home from work and open the windows and get a taste of some fall type weather inside the house. I'll savor it, its only supposed to be tomorrow and Friday nights, then back to the Summer BS.

I spent a large part of the late afternoon into the evening yesterday with the spigots turned on watering my lawn..

I guess Mother Nature decided about a month ago or so, that metropolitan Omaha was going to avoid rain. It’d be nice if the extended forecast included at least one day with a thirst quenching soaker…

July 2022 Moisture Report

Post by Busguy2010 »

Man this sucks. I just watch Anthony on KETV and he indicates a warmer than normal extended forecast. Not only do we deal with upper 90's to lower 100's for the next week, the next next week also looks like 90's and little to no precipitation.

I march on with the July Moisture report:

July Normal 3.55"
Actual 2.73"
July 2022: -.82"

2022 year to date -2.58"

2020 decade to date -13.27"

This year isn't terrible itself. Neither was 2021. We are pretty much even with the deficit we had at the end of 2020. 2020 is the reason we are behind 13+ inches on the decade.

And yes, 2012 was the worst drought and hottest summer I can remember.

A few strong/severe storms are possible in parts of Nebraska later today and tonight. Much of the threat currently looks to remain west/northwest of Omaha (based on the latest model data) but it will be close enough that things will need to be watched in our area too.

Damaging wind/hail would be the main threat.

This is the main threat area IMO indicated on the map below - it differs slightly from what the SPC shows (it's further west/southwest and a larger area - but overall pretty similar). This is contingent on capping though and how strong it ends up being in the southern parts of the outlined area.

MD has been issued for the area at risk for a possible watch being issued (and extends all the way to Omaha though I still believe most of the risk should stay northwest/west of here). Long story short, don't be surprised if a watch is issued in the near future for a damaging wind/hail threat (initially large hail and then storms that transition to possibly more of a damaging wind threat).

I’d be happy with a nice soaking rain event.. Nothing significant looks to be on the horizon stretching into mid August..

The strange thing is if you look at the Douglas County color-coded rainfall maps the amounts of rain have been highly variable just within the county itself, mostly from very localized rain and hail events as we’ve all witnessed this summer, the part of DOCO I live in has missed out on all but a few heavy rain events.

Unfortunately not anything anytime soon anyway. "Maybe" some rain tomorrow morning but it will be spotty and probably won't last long. Our next "best" chance for rain after that is probably this coming weekend but it's too far out to really feel confident at all that it will hit Omaha itself...

Yeah, it’s unfortunate. Literally, it seems Mother Nature turned the spigots off for rain in the Omaha area around the last week of June. It’s been scarce since..

So, like another poster said, mowing your lawn every week right now is probably unnecessary. And those water bills will rise if you want to keep your grass reasonably green. The alternative? It’ll simply burnout into a “lovely” light blonde straw- the November in August look. It’s a new fad…
