Jackie Robinson signed baseball found by Omaha family headed for auction

Years ago, prominent Nebraska hotel owner A.Q. Schimmel asked baseball great Jackie Robinson to autograph a ball for his daughter. It sat locked away in a safe in Carolyn Schimmel Magid’s basement for decades. After her death in May, her four children say they plan to sell the ball at an estate sale in Omaha this weekend. It could bring in big money: Bidding starts at $50,000.

“We’re sentimental toward it, but at a certain price we would let it go,” youngest sibling Trenton Magid said. He’s co-host with Jeff Beals of the “Grow Omaha” show on KFAB. Joel Ward, co-owner of Twist of Fate Estate Sales — which is handling this weekend’s sale — said interest is already huge. A marketing campaign began Monday night, and people from all over the country are calling.

Solid show. Surprised to hear a delicatessen open in Old Market, but that's great news. Any word on the Alamo Theater in Midtown? I know it's a recent closure, but I was hoping to have a question about that on the show.

As far as the Alamo, we asked before and after the show. Amanda said something very exciting is coming, but couldn't tell us. No hints or anything! Jeff even asked Amanda's boss last week too, but she was just as tight lipped...

Cool, I am just hope it doesn't stay unused for too long. Hopefully it's still a theater.

Mercer and Sons is pretty good. Nice selection and great interior. They do make prepared sandwiches and soups but do not have any seating so it’s all take home or take to
a bar and eat.

Did Jean let it slip that a new police/fire headquarters may in fact leave downtown a la the central library?

Will 72nd & Dodge indeed be the new "city center"?

There's never a clear and easy solution but I wish the new "homeless coordinator" all the best luck.

As a longtime critic of the Mayor I'll giver her credit for the pro-urban core development rhetoric. A number of exciting possibilities were laid out in that respect including the old U.P. site. Yet, as excited as I am for new RFPs there, I wonder if we'd also be better served with the like at the old Civic site?

Regarding the public safety HQ, the way I heard it was that she thought it should stay in or near downtown, but that the site selection is still in the works.

I am also a critic of some of what the mayor does, but she doesn't really stand in the way of urban development.

I heard it the same way, very close to downtown. I was thinking that might be somewhere near 480?

So West of 480, say on land currently owned by Mutual?

I suppose that would be "close enough", yet I still don't get why the civic site hasn't been the obvious choice.
