Former Northwest forward Ryan Hawkins chasing pro hoops dreams
When Ryan Hawkins made the decision to transfer from Northwest Missouri State to Creighton for one final year of college basketball, he didn’t seek validation of his own game. The day before 58 players will hear their names called in the NBA Draft, Hawkins looks back on his season at the Division I level as a reinforcement for all of Division II, showcasing how close the talent gap is. Hawkins is proof as a Division II All-American turned All-Big East second team member. Now, Hawkins hopes his basketball career is extended to the professional ranks in one way or another this weekend.
Hawkins says his combination of size and shooting will provide him his best chance at making a pro career. Standing at 6-foot-7, Hawkins shot 45 percent from 3-point range in his last two years at Northwest and shot 36 percent from deep at Creighton. Between training in Indiana with his agent, Jeff Potter, and working out for NBA teams over the last month, Hawkins earned a chance to showcase those skills. “That’s kinda gonna have to be my bread and butter,” Hawkins said. “I need to learn how to shoot even better than I can now, and I look forward to that challenge.” The early portion of the pre-draft process included a trip to the Portsmouth Invitational where draft eligible players competed for a weekend on teams in front of scouts. Among his teammates was Trevor Hudgins, another NBA hopeful and a former teammate at Northwest.

Re: Creighton Basketball 2022-2023
Is Arthur Kaluma Creighton's next NBA Draft pick?
As for Kaluma, he's appearing in multiple early 2023 mock NBA Drafts.
NBA Draft Room has the 6-foot-7 220-pounder as the No. 18 overall pick of the 2023 Draft, heading to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Both Scheierman (70th) and Kalkbrenner (148th) show up in the NBA Draft Room's rundown of potential 2023 picks.

Duke and Kansas rise in Way-Too-Early Top 25 men's college basketball rankings for 2022-23
7. Creighton Bluejays
Previous: 5
On paper, offense wouldn't appear to be an issue for Creighton next season. The Bluejays bring back three double-figure scorers, add one of the best offensive players in the country via the transfer portal in Baylor Scheierman, and also get Mason Miller off of a redshirt season. At the same time, this is a team that loses two double-figure scorers from a group that finished No. 112 nationally in adjusted offensive efficiency, according to KenPom.com.
A step forward from potential draft pick Arthur Kaluma will be a boost, as will the addition of Scheierman. Will that impact the team's defense, a group that finished first in the Big East and inside the top 20 nationally, according to KenPom? It shouldn't. South Dakota State was poor defensively, but Scheierman is a very good defensive rebounder, and some of his weaknesses can be hidden playing alongside Kaluma and Big East Defensive Player of the Year Ryan Kalkbrenner.

Hawkins lands with Toronto Raptors for Summer League
(Omaha) According to the Creighton Men’s Basketball Twitter account, Atlantic native Ryan Hawkins is getting an opportunity to play in the NBA Summer League.
Hawkins has reportedly signed with the Toronto Raptors. The NBA Summer League in Las Vegas runs July 7th-17th.
Hawkins used his first three years of college eligibility playing for Northwest Missouri State. With the Bearcats he was a member of three national championship teams. Hawkins is Northwest’s all-time leading rebounder along with ranking second in school history in steals and third in scoring. He transferred to Creighton last season for his final year of eligibility. With the Bluejays he averaged 13.8 points and 7.8 rebounds per game, earning 2nd team All-Big East honors.

Good to see. Hopefully he gets picked up.

If Ryan Kalkbrenner returns fully healthy from the knee injury he suffered in the first round of the 2022 NCAA tournament, he deserves to be considered among the best centers in college basketball. Over his final 12 games of last season, the 7-1 Missouri native averaged 16.9 points, 9.1 rebounds and 2.2 blocks, shooting better than 68% from the field. He had four double-doubles during that span, including a 22-point, 15-rebound effort against Georgetown and 22 points and 10 rebounds against Adama Sanogo and UConn. Kalkbrenner is a nightmare to defend given his ability to play around the basket and also step out and facilitate for teammates.
Projected starting lineup:
Ryan Nembhard (11.3 PPG)
Trey Alexander (7.4 PPG)
Baylor Scheierman (16.2 PPG at South Dakota State)
Arthur Kaluma (10.4 PPG)
Ryan Kalkbrenner (13.1 PPG)

Bellevue West's Josiah Dotzler commits to Creighton basketball
Josiah Dotzler had felt the heat since June.
Conversations between him and Creighton’s coaching staff seriously picked up then. His older brother, Josh, was the Bluejays’ starting point guard for a couple seasons. He plays high school basketball less than 15 minutes from the campus. It all felt too right. After a fruitful visit and one final discussion at the Nike EYBL Peach Jam, he’d seen everything he needed to. The Bellevue West point guard announced his commitment to Creighton via Twitter on Monday morning.
“When coach (Greg McDermott) started reaching out, mostly this summer, I felt super wanted,” Dotzler said. “When I went on that visit, all the pieces started to align and I felt like I was at home.” The three-star point guard held offers from Drake, Indiana State and UNO, which he’d received as recently as this past week. Dotzler’s eyes were set on the Bluejays long before then, though.

BIG EAST-Big 12 Battle Extended Two Years
The BIG EAST and Big 12 Conferences have announced a two-year extension to the BIG EAST-Big 12-Battle, their men's basketball non-conference scheduling alliance which has been in effect since 2019-20. The extension will include competition in November and December during each of the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons. With each conference adding member schools since the start of the original agreement, The Battle will increase from 10 to 11 matchups between the conferences during the two extension years. The Big 12 will host six games in 2023-24, and the BIG EAST will host six contests in 2024-2025.
The Battle matchups will continue to be jointly determined by the two conferences, with the home team choosing the venue of its game. Broadcast arrangements for the contests will be determined by the national television rights holder of the home team, which is FOX Sports for the BIG EAST and ESPN for the Big 12. Creighton is 1-2 all-time in the BIG EAST-Big 12 Battle heading into this year's Dec. 1 game at Texas. The Bluejays defeated Oklahoma (83-73) in Omaha in 2019 before falling to No. 5 Kansas (73-72) in Lawrence in 2020. Last year CU lost a 65-58 game to No. 18 Iowa State in Omaha.
This season's BIG EAST-Big 12 Battle schedule was announced previously.

Andronikashvili To Pursue Professional Opportunities in Europe
Georgia native played in 33 games as a reserve last season
Rati Andronikashvili has informed the Creighton men's basketball coaching staff that he will not be returning to the Bluejay program. Andronikashvili has indicated that he intends to pursue professional opportunities in Europe. The guard from Tbilisi, Georgia, played in 33 games as a reserve for the Bluejays as a redshirt freshman in 2021-22, averaging 1.8 points and 1.1 assists per game. He missed the 2020-21 campaign due to injury. "We appreciate Rati's contributions to our program and wish him the best of luck as he pursues his professional career," said Creighton head coach Greg McDermott. Creighton finished the 2021-22 season with a 23-12 record and advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.

Re: Creighton Basketball 2022-2023
Greg McDermott isn't paying attention to Creighton basketball's rankings
Basically this should all mean more free pizza for season ticket holders.
McDermott is also really high on Ben Shtolzberg. It also means chucking up more 3s than most, though that isn’t something the Bluejays completely shied away from last season despite shooting 30.8% from deep.
He even suggested that fans could expect to see junior Ryan Kalkbrenner shooting 3s this year, perhaps at a higher volume than his 0.4 attempts per game a season ago.
Creighton won’t enter the season with the injuries that plagued it down the stretch. McDermott described Nembhard and Kalkbrenner, who were missed during the Bluejays’ NCAA tournament bout with Kansas in the Round of 32, as being “in a good place.”
Kaluma hasn’t been active for a few weeks for what McDermott called a minor knee issue, which he’ll return from in two to three weeks. Freshman Jasen Green had toe surgery earlier in the offseason, which kept him out for roughly five weeks, but he’s since returned. McDermott said no one else on the team is limited at the moment.
Ranked No. 74 in his recruiting class by 247Sports composite, Miller chose to redshirt last season in order to develop his body. According to McDermott, Miller has put on 12-15 pounds of muscle. Aside from his stellar shooting, McDermott tabbed him as the best vertical leaper on the team.
“Frankly, I’ll be disappointed if he doesn’t work his way into the rotation,” McDermott said.
Basically this should all mean more free pizza for season ticket holders.

5 teams on the rise entering the 2022-23 season
Creighton: The Bluejays trailed eventual national champion Kansas by a point with less than two minutes remaining in the Round of 32 last March without the Big East Rookie of the Year — Ryan Nembhard (11.1 points, 4.4 assists, 3.1 rebounds) — and the Big East Defensive Player of the Year — Ryan Kalkbrenner (13.1 points, 7.7 rebounds, 2.6 blocks) — in the lineup due to injuries. Both of those players are back healthy and so are sophomores Trey Alexander (7.4 points) and Arthur Kaluma (10.4 points, 5.4 rebounds), who should both be All-Big East caliber players in their second seasons of college basketball. Meanwhile, South Dakota State transfer Baylor Scheierman (16.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, 4.5 assists) should fit in seamlessly as Creighton’s fifth starter. The Big East goes through Omaha.

The Jays haven’t played on Christmas since 1953. It’s the first time in Big East history that a conference game will be played on the holiday, which I'll admit is a fascinating tie to Creighton. But it certainly provokes questions, and makes one question what went into all of its intricacies.

Great story about Nembhard and how is older brother would push him to play and eventually end up at the level he is now. I love reading stories like this that show that guys really work hard to get where they are.

Re: Creighton Basketball 2022-2023
Baylor Scheierman celebrates a birthday on the same day Creighton opens camp
Back in the spring you might remember there was loads of anticipation for this upcoming basketball season and then on top of that the excitement grew when Baylor Scheierman committed in early May. Here we are at the start of camp, which is still 42 days before the opener and Scheierman hit the floor on his birthday. Ideally when it’s all said and done the experience at Creighton will be gift as he sets his sights on the NBA. It will take a lot of work between now and then and this was a pretty routine day for the transfer out of South Dakota State, classes, lifting, practice, you get the idea. Baylor did snack on some birthday cookies in the locker room. The adjustment to a new team and place is well underway, Baylor spent a lot of time with his teammates this summer, they are already building chemistry. As Greg McDermott installs the offense over the next six weeks Baylor will become more familiar with that side of the Bluejays. So far so good with a long ways to go before a challenging non-conference schedule starts in early November.

15 players who will become stars during the 2022-23 season
Ryan Nembhard, Creighton: The reigning Big East Rookie of the Year doesn’t get the attention that he deserves entering his sophomore season because he didn’t play after Feb. 23rd due to a season-ending wrist injury. Have people forgotten how good Nembhard was as a freshman point guard? The 6-foot floor general averaged 11.3 points, 4.4 assists, and 3.1 rebounds in his first year of college basketball while logging an average of 34.8 minutes each time he took the floor. Nembhard is on track to be one of the best point guards in the country and possibly, an All-American during the 2022-23 season.
Arthur Kaluma, Creighton: The 6-7 Kaluma averaged 18 points and nine rebounds in two NCAA Tournament games last March, highlighted by an 24-point, 12-rebound performance against Kansas in the Round of 32. Expect Kaluma to emerge as one of the best players in the Big East during his second season of college basketball.

7. Creighton Bluejays
Previous: 7
Expectations for Big East favorite Creighton skyrocketed in early May when South Dakota State transfer Baylor Scheierman committed to the Bluejays. Perhaps the best NBA prospect in the transfer portal and one of the best offensive players in the country last season, Scheierman won Summit League Player of the Year after averaging 16.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 4.5 assists.
He joins a group that returns four players who started at least 13 games for one of the youngest teams in the country. Arthur Kaluma is a potential first-round pick, Ryan Kalkbrenner is a 7-foot-1 difference-maker at both ends of the floor and point guard Ryan Nembhard had a terrific freshman season.
The only knock on Greg McDermott's team: They need to be more consistent offensively; Creighton was ninth in the Big East in offensive efficiency last season, according to KenPom.
Projected starting lineup:
Ryan Nembhard (11.3 PPG)
Trey Alexander (7.4 PPG)
Baylor Scheierman (16.2 PPG at South Dakota State)
Arthur Kaluma (10.4 PPG)
Ryan Kalkbrenner (13.1 PPG)

Re: Creighton Basketball 2022-2023
This is another reason why I love Coach Mac:
In an interview on the Big East Digital Network, he joked with Providence coach Ed Cooley the way only two old friends can.
“I have a question for Ed,” he said at the top of their segment. “Are you going to play all your games this season? That was the best phone call I got last year. 2:00 in the afternoon on game day (Fake coughing).”
“We got to play them for a conference championship, and I think he bought about 56 kegs of beer for that crowd,” McDermott added, before being interrupted by Cooley.
“74 kegs of beer. And then about eight days later we got beat by a million right here on this floor.”
“They drank it, and then they threw it at us,” McDermott countered. “Only at the Dunk.”
