Bucs win Super Bowl with huskers Ndamukong Suh, Lavonte David, and Khalil Davis on roster. And GM Jason Licht played with Huskers and Nebraska Wesleyan.

Also Boys Town graduate and former UNO football player Shaq Barrett had 2 sacks in the game.

Yes it was. Anyone know what this year’s game did in the overnights nationwide? I heard Boston had higher ratings than Tampa. Wondered how this year did compared to others.

Okay, I saw the list. Lot of names. I guess Nebraska's had the most Super Bowl players? But I couldn't help but notice a couple of former well-known Husker greats weren't on that list. Johnny Rodgers and Mike Rozier. They never played in a Super Bowl? Not even once?

Neither Johnny Rodgers or Mike Rozier played on NFL teams who went to the Super Bowl. Rodgers played briefly for the San Diego Chargers in the 70’s..but played the bulk of his professional football career in Canada for the CFL where he did win multiple championships.. Mike Rozier played for the Houston Oilers in the 80’s and that franchise never played in the Super Bowl until 1999 when they moved to Nashville and became the Tennessee Titans...

the Bucs and Lavonte David reached a two-year extension on Tuesday. Reportedly the deal is worth $25 million with $20M of that is guaranteed.

David is one of only three players since 2000 with 1,000-plus tackles and 20-plus sacks in their first nine seasons, per NFL Research

I don't know why I was thinking of this. Nebraska football has been a |expletive| show for a while now, but we still have two players that have had some of the most successful post-Husker pro careers playing.

Rex Burkhead - 2 SB appearances, 1 SB win.
I know a lot of people here didn't like it, but he had two of the most memorable moments by a Husker in the pros by scoring the game winning touchdown in the AFC Championship against the Chiefs, then followed by his dagger first down run in the subsequent Super Bowl.

Ndamukong Suh - 2 SB appearances, 1 SB win.

Aside from Roger Craig and Ahman Green - before my time - Rex Burkhead and Ndamukong have probably had the most successful pro careers. Any others?

Are there any other CFB teams besides Nebraska that used to be powerhouses, but no longer are? Teams that have fallen? I could think of a few. Florida State and UCLA are a couple. Any others?

That's subjective for sure. But yeah, Nebraska, Florida State are the ones that came to mind, though Florida State had a championship in 2013 I think. Miami is another one. Texas, though they're currently in the mix. Oregon was really good in the early 2010's and they're still in contention. Florida was really good in the 90's and again in like 2008 with Tebow, but not really any more. USC also. Regardless, all these teams have been doing a lot better than Nebraska. I'm not sure there is a team that has fallen off harder than the Huskers.

Army? Harvard, Princeton and Yale used to be top dogs too?

Florida State had a recent memory National Championship, so I don't think you can quite include them.

Definitely UCLA comes to mind and Tennessee as well . UCLA was a pretty respectable team about 30 years ago. Now you hardly hear about them. But it’s hard to find a team that has fallen as far as Nebraska, except for a few years Nebraska hasn’t really had a good team since Suh played.

I don't know about Penn State, I think they have done better than expected since the Paterno/Sandusky garbage of the early 2010's. I thought that would have damaged then for a long time.

Except last year when the Huskers unexpectedly curb stomped em. But yeah Penn State was another team that was good in the 80's or 90's that isn't what it used to be. I still can't think of a team that has fallen off harder than the Huskers.

Okay, I guess they didn't curb stomp em, but they lost to the lowly Huskers when they started the season ranked top 1p.

Penn State and Michigan have probably both fallen off a little since the 80’s and 90’s. They just don’t put the fear in opponents like they once did. Likewise the team to the east of us Iowa State has made one of the most stunning improvements in recent years. I saw they are picked in one preseason ranking as high as 7. They have no mountains, beautiful beaches or mild winter weather in central Iowa. The head coach has figured something out. One of the great turnarounds in college sports. Similar to Kansas State when Bill Snyder took over.

Here's a Nebraska fantasy football season scenario in my mind:

Nebraska still being in the Big 12 along with Colorado, Missouri and Texas A&M, all of who Nebraska beats that season. They go 10-2, play Oklahoma in the Big 12 Championship game and win. Finally on New Year's Day, Nebraska plays Oregon in the Rose Bowl and wins. They finish at 12-2.

Ayyyy, as much of a fan as I am of Tom Brady, I just found out Brett Maher scored all 9 points himself in the Saints's shutout of Tampa Bay. I didn't even know he was in the league still. Good for him

On the defense there was at least Ndamukong Suh and LaVante David still representing. Holding to 9 points in the NFL is sweet every time it happens, the offense for Tampa Bay totally stunk it up.

Wow, I just noticed Ameer Abdullah is still giving it a shot with the Raiders. I'm surprised, seems like forever ago that he was with the Huskers. Have to assume this is his last stop, but it was cool to see he's still out there.

The Ohio football program announced today (Aug. 18) that the Ohio University Board of Trustees agreed to name the football field in Peden Stadium for former head coach Frank Solich. "I'm honored by the recognition and give credit to all the players and coaches who have been with me along the way," said Solich. Mark Pelini, who started at center for the Nebraska Cornhuskers in 2014, and who was the nephew of former Husker head coach Bo Pelini, died Sunday in a vehicle crash in Indiana. Investigators say Pelini, 31, was driving an SUV that hit a deer on an Indiana toll road. The SUV crossed the median and hit a pick-up head-on. Pelini, his passenger 31-year-0ld Jillian Marian of Youngstown Ohio both were killed. A passenger in the pick-up, 57-year-old Jane Beecher of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania also died in the crash. The driver and the backseat passenger in the pickup survived with serious injuries. Mark Pelini played for the Huskers from 2010 to 2014. He started as a walk-on, and because the team's starting center in the 2014 season.

A former Husker standout who has been in the Nebraska athletic department since late 2017 is leaving the program.

LINCOLN, Neb. – A former Husker standout who has been in the Nebraska athletic department since late 2017 is leaving the program. Matt Davison, who has served as an analyst for the Husker Radio Network football broadcasts for 16 seasons, joined the athletic department in December of 2017 as senior associate athletic director for external engagement. Davison, who was instrumental in bringing in former head coach Scott Frost, officially became a part of the administration at the same time Frost was hired. Davison is leaving athletic administration to join Tom and Shawn Peed in launching The 1890 Initiative, LLC, a new name-image-likeness collective that the founders say will support Nebraska student-athletes.

Davison, who won a national championship with the Huskers in 1997 after a standout high school career at Tecumseh, will serve as president of the organization. “I want to thank Matt Davison for his hard work in Husker Athletics,” Nebraska athletic director Trev Alberts said. “Matt has a passion for Nebraska, and we look forward to his new venture with The 1890 Initiative. As I have said many time, Nebraska is positioned to be a leader in Name, Image and Likeness, and it is a positive when there are many people and groups that want to help our student-athletes.”

According to a press release issued by 1890, the collective will focus on Husker football and volleyball student-athletes and assist them with opportunities in Nebraska through local charities, partnerships and networking with local businesses. The organization said opportunities will include camps, clinics, community outreach, autograph signings, public appearances, nonprofit engagement, social media promotions and other activities. “I’ve been a Husker fan my entire life, and I’ve been grateful to remain close to the program in a variety of roles throughout my career,” Davison said. “The 1890 Initiative will allow me to help our student-athletes navigate their goals with NIL, and that is exciting for me.” The Peed family is providing financial contribution to the initiative, according to the press release, noting that 100 of additional contributions will go directly to Nebraska student-athletes.

The former split end from Tecumseh won a national championship with Nebraska before serving 19 years as the color commentator for Husker football. He is perhaps best known for making the game-saving catch against Missouri in 1997, keeping the Huskers' national title hopes alive. Frank Solich on 2024 College Football Hall of Fame Ballot
The former Husker coach is a candidate for enshrinement for a second year

Frank Solich is a vote away from of the College Football Hall of Fame.

The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame has announced the names of players and coaches for the 2024 ballot. This is Solich's second year on the ballot. Solich is one of nine coaches from the Football Bowl Subdivision on the ballot. He was an assistant at Nebraska from 1979-1997 before taking over as the head coach through 2003. He closed his career at Ohio from 2005 to 2020.

In a surprising turn of events, Miami Dolphins linebacker Shaquil Barrett announced his retirement just before the veterans report for training camp on Tuesday, as per his Instagram post on Saturday afternoon.
Barrett said he retired because he wanted to spend more time as a husband and a father.

Barrett, an undrafted free agent from Colorado State, had 59 career sacks with the Buccaneers and Denver Broncos. During his first season with Tampa Bay, he led the league with 19.5 sacks. That was the Barrett the Dolphins were looking for when he signed this spring.
