Nebraska pitcher Shay Schanaman to stay with Huskers for fifth season

One of Nebraska’s veteran pitchers is returning for one more college baseball season. Senior right-hander Shay Schanaman will stay with the Huskers for a fifth year, he told The World-Herald on Wednesday. The Grand Island grad has been a starter the past two springs and logged team highs in innings (77) and strikeouts (76) in 2022. Asked in May whether he would like to return to Nebraska he acknowledged his extra year of eligibility and added “I would take that in a second.”

Instead, the hurler with a wipeout slider will join left-hander Kyle Perry for a fifth go-round in Lincoln while taking graduate classes. The pandemic season in 2020 allowed for the extra year of eligibility. Both Schanaman and Perry are extra valuable to retain this offseason because they won’t count against Nebraska’s 35-man roster as players who were with the program during the pandemic year.

Lincoln East's Jalen Worthley commits to Nebraska baseball

Lincoln East ace Jalen Worthley isn't going far to play college ball. The pitcher announced Friday on Twitter that he is committing to Nebraska baseball. "I'm staying home," Worthley said in his tweet. Worthley, a All-Nebraska selection, decommitted from San Jose State earlier this summer. The lefthander won both his state tournament starts in 2022 by shutout and finished the season with 67 strikeouts. He finished the season 7-0. He did not play for the Spartan's American Legion team (Carpet Land) this summer.

Nebraska's Griffin Everitt to return for one more year

A summer packed with baseball successes confirmed to Griffin Everitt what he had long suspected. He and Nebraska have some unfinished business together. The two-year Husker catcher and co-captain last season will return for one more college campaign, he told The World-Herald on Sunday. His decision – generally expected after he went undrafted in mid-July – means NU retains one of its most consistent performers who has been a .289 career hitter across 85 career starts.

“I’m locked in and coming back,” Everitt said. “It was always the plan for me to come back. No opportunities came up that were worth taking so I’m coming back.” The Lincoln Southwest grad and former junior-college standout has been away from home since the Huskers completed a 23-30 campaign in late May. He hit around .300 for the Santa Barbara Foresters of the California Collegiate League, notably walking roughly as many times as he struck out across 20-plus games. Everitt finished his summer in Wichita, Kansas, on Saturday night as the Foresters won the National Baseball Congress World Series.

Nebraska baseball lands Texas prep strikeout leader JC Gutierrez

The pitcher who led the state of Texas in strikeouts last spring is coming to Nebraska. JC Gutierrez — formerly a Texas Tech commit for nearly two years — becomes the latest and likely the last addition to a mega-sized Husker recruiting class that now sits at 25 members. The left-hander from La Joya, Texas, gave his pledge to Husker coaches earlier this month and confirmed his decision on Friday.

“Everyone there is excited for you to succeed and all the resources are there,” said Gutierrez, who visited the campus in late July. “Ultimately, that’s what I was looking for. That’s what really made me content. That’s what made me love Nebraska.” Gutierrez dominated the biggest classification of prep baseball in Texas last season, striking out 153 batters and walking just 42 with a 2.30 earned-run average across 82 1/3 innings. Perfect Game ranks him the No. 115 lefty in his class nationally. He posted a 2.20 ERA across his high school career with 348 punchouts in 203 1/3 innings.

The 5-foot-10, 175-pounder had been set to join Texas Tech until mid-July, when the program informed him in the wake of the major-league draft that scholarship money was no longer available. He knew of Nebraska through one of his longtime travel-ball teammates, Max Childress, the son of NU director of player development Rob Childress. Husker coaches reached out and he toured Lincoln soon after.
