I do like both Chick Fil A and Raising Canes- they both specialize in serving fast food chicken, but are different. Same with Popeyes…

Speaking of KFC about the only thing I get there now is the Nashville hot chicken. I like to get that maybe a few times a year. It's a nice treat, I think it's lip smackin good if they get a nice bath of the hot oil on your chicken.

And canes is good too, that place is just so "meat n taters" though. They know what they do well and they NEVER deviate from it... I dont think they've ever come up with any limited time items, or tried anything fun at all really. Id love for them to even JUST come up with a spicy version of their sauce, or a spicy version of their chicken breading. I'm sure those small additions alone would greatly raise the frequency of my visits to them. And if they came out with a Nashville hot version, all bets would be off for me. Id be in there once a week I bet. Fat chance at that though. Theyre just so boring.

It is hit and miss. Ive had the best luck with the chicken tenders version of it. Usually I get an acceptable amount of hot oil, sometimes they give you barely any, and this last time they were almost submerged.

While their food is not sit in the drive-through line wrapped around the build good it is decent. What I will say IMO their food is more consistent from order to order than most of not all other fast food places

I think Raising Cane's is okay. They've built an entire restaurant concept around what is basically a kid's menu item. Their chicken fingers are juicy, but a tad bland. That's probably why most of their customers drown everything in Cane's Sauce. I'm not a fan of fry sauces as they taste like what they are (doctored-up mayonnaise). So, I hit the place up maybe once every 18 months or so. For fast food chicken I'd rather get spicy bone-in chicken at Popeye's or a spicy chicken sandwich at Chick-fil-A.

As far as fast food, bone in fried chicken chains go, I’ll take Popeye’s over KFC every time..Now that Church’s Chicken has reentered the Omaha market, I’ll be happy to revisit them at some point…

I'll have to give Church's Chicken a try again. I loved them when they were here in 1996-97. I should love them again this time around. That was their slogan at the time: "Gotta Love It". And I sure did. So did the rest of my family.

Speaking of chicken, I noticed there is quite a bit of work happening at the Chik-fil-a at 76th & Dodge. I'm assuming they may be changing the drive thru to the new concept. Not really sure how they work, but they kind of look like a bank or a pharmacy drive thru.

Funny. Chick-Fil-A's been around since 1946, yet I never even heard of them until the early 2010's. How long have they been in Nebraska anyway?

Most days during the lunch and dinner rush, they have employees outside (Up to 6 employees in some cases). They take your order in person at your car window with an iPad. So when you pull up to the window, they hand you the food and you go. Its super efficient.

4 employees taking orders on iPad.
1 With an actual register incase you need a receipt or pay cash.
1 person outside the window handing out food and drinks.

Some of the locations had tents at first and are now replacing them with these permeant structures. The 120th and Dodge location is in the works now.

Is Cliffs or any of it's descendants still around? When I was younger I loved Dixie Chicken, Cliffs, Rose Lodge and others. Lee's in Lincoln was very good too.

I don't have a dog in the current chicken sandwich fight. I'm not interested in some thousand plus restaurant chain's industrial food. If you like it, good for you.

Yes- I remember all of those places.. Sadly, the last one remaining- Jack & Mary’s (which was Cliff’s before renamed) closed last year. Completely pandemic related…

For me Alpine Inn and Surf Side Club. Was at both recently. Alpine Inn was as good as it's always been. I was at Surf Side last Saturday night and I think it was the best chicken I had ever had there. I have always liked it and love the corn fritters but this time I loved the fried chicken.

Time Out Chicken on N 30th is a favorite of mine as well. I snag a 3 piece box and a strawberry soda about once every other month. I’ve been a customer of theirs since 1990…

Don't get me wrong, I eat at each of the three chains chains discussed already ... Not terribly often, but between the three, maybe 15 times a year?

Only other chicken place I go to is Time Out. And that's exactly what it is for me. I don't have a lot of time for a "time out" so I only go there like once or twice a year... And on top of that, the line always takes upward of 30-45 minutes to get through. And its not much quicker to go inside. So unfortunately, my favorite chicken place to go to doesn't see me as often as I'd like.

The chains have the convenience factor, and that is everything, even though admittedly, they aren't always that good, not that bad either.

Why would you want to? Honestly, if there's one food that's equally good at chain fast food restaurants as it is ma-and-pa full service restaurants, then it's probably fried chicken. For pretty much every other food it would be the opposite, but the big fried chicken chains know what they're doing. Perhaps because it's such a simple process (bone-in chicken, batter, fry). There's no where to really cut corners when you're using bone-in chicken. Now, the sides, on the other hand, are a completely different story, but the bone-in chicken at fast food places is pretty solid.

LOL, ain't that the truth... I make a lot of stuff at home for the purpose of it being better than anything I can get at any restaurant, and pretty much the one thing I still haven't figured out how to make any kind of fried chicken (bone in or boneless, strips or sandwiches) taste as good as even KFC. I leave that one to the professionals anymore.

I've always wondered the reasoning behind that as well. I always thought it was odd they come out in late fall when its getting cold, not the time of year where'd you think of BBQ... But maybe that's why it works. Sell it when other sources of BBQ are off the table... And honestly, they aren't even that good, but I admit I still get a few trips worth every late fall, and they hit some weird sort of spot now. They got their timing down, and the reason why it comes and goes, I think, is because its not good enough to work year-round.
