Interesting. The article implies that the revived CCHA would be the best fit for them, and they may be right. However there are several close NCHC schools aroud as well, including UNO and North Dakota.

The Mavs played in the CCHA for about 10 years before moving to the WCHA and finally the NCHC. The CCHA in the article is a new one, that they are resurrecting in 2021.

Garrett Raboin, an assistant coach for the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers, will lead the fledgling Augustana hockey program, the school announced Monday.

The Vikings, who are set to begin play in 2023-24, will be the first NCAA hockey program in South Dakota, and the first sport at Augustana to compete at the Division I level.

Raboin, 37, played college hockey at St. Cloud State and has some connections to Sioux Falls. His coach at St. Cloud State was Bob Motzko, the former Stampede coach. After his playing career, Raboin joined Motzko’s staff for the Huskies, then followed him to Minnesota when Motzko was named coach of the Gophers.

CCHA grants membership to Augustana University

The Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) today announced the CCHA Board of Directors has voted unanimously to welcome Augustana University as the league's ninth member.

First opponent announced for Augustana University men's hockey team's inaugural season

Augustana men's hockey head coach Garrett Raboin announced Tuesday that the Viking men's hockey team will travel to South Bend, Indiana, for a series on Dec. 30-31, 2023, against the Fighting Irish.

The opponent is the first announced for the Vikings for their inaugural season in 2023-24.

Augustana to open inaugural season at Wisconsin Badgers
First games October 6th & 7th at Kohl Center in Madison


The two-game set brings Augustana’s inaugural season to a schedule of 32 announced games. Following the opening weekend at Wisconsin, the Vikings make their debut in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, with the inaugural CCHA contests against Bowling Green inside the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center on Oct. 14-15.

The debut of Augustana inside the on-campus home of Midco Arena is Jan. 26-27 as the Vikings host Ferris State.

I saw that Augustana has their first hockey game this Saturday against Wisconsin. Looks like Augie brought in several transfer portal players.
“Coach Raboin made the most of the transfer portal as he brought in 15 transfer players. His transfer class involves five graduate students, one senior, seven juniors and two sophomores. AU comes into the 2023-24 season as the ninth oldest team in the NCAA, with an average age of 22.6.”

Augustana University and Sioux Falls Sports Authority will host an NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Regional in 2028. The men's hockey regional will be held at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls. The building is a regularly used hockey venue, serving as the home to the Sioux Falls Stampede of the USHL, and seats more than 10,500 for hockey. The Denny Sanford PREMIER Center recently hosted an NCAA Regional for 2024 and will also be the home to the 2026 Regionals hosted by Omaha.

I had the opportunity to tour Augie’s Midco Arena during my Class Reunion, I was impressed. A very nice setup from locker rooms, weight room, trainer room and of course the arena itself.

I saw that Augie defeated #8 Colorado twice this weekend (5-1 & 3-2] and is now 12-7-1 for the season. UNO hockey plays Colorado College next weekend

They are off to a good start this year. They are 5-0 against the NCHC This year, beat North Dakota in an exhibition, swept UNO, swept CC.
