Re: Nebraska Football 2022
I don't have a clue what Nebraska will look like tomorrow, We will have to wait and see if all the changes Frost made will pay off with a victory. If they can eliminate most of the little mind numbing and boneheaded mistakes they made last year then maybe they can have a winning season. I really think they need to start 3-0 because this is the easiest part of there schedule. Except for last year Nebraska and Northwestern is usually a competitive game.

Re: Nebraska Football 2022
It looks like another long year of Nebraska football, it's hard to see much improvement from this team. They will be lucky to win 3 or 4 games. An impressive win for Northwestern, they even showed up a day later than Nebraska and still won. Tomorrow they will tour Dublin and fly back Monday, as they have a bye next week.

Re: Nebraska Football 2022
Different year- same result. The Huskers lose a game they really should have won..
Explain, after taking a 28-17 lead in the 3rd quarter, the decision of an on side kick? Naturally, Northwestern recovers at the Husker 44.. Then proceeds to waltz into the end zone with a short TD drive- and guess what? Game on again.. No cup half full here. This loss just ‘feels” like the 9 gut punches we experienced last year..
Pathetic…

Re: Nebraska Football 2022
I'm just in disbelief that nothing has changed. Its the same old story. Casey Thompson looked really good for the first half, and it was like after that, the coaching made him look bad. Open field tackling was horrendous, dropped passes were also horrendous and that fumble call was highly debatable. And what in gods name was that onside kick call? Absolutely inexplicable. Youre up 11 and you onside kick? And then to watch Northwestern end the game by slowly and agonizingly run the ball down their throat. Northwestern better turn up the Big Ten West champs just so I can accept this loss.

I’ll add, Northwestern’s staff outcoached Nebraska..To pretty much state the obvious..
Frost is well on his way to another 3 to 5 win season and a trip out the door at NU. And that decision will be made swiftly and quickly…

Re: Nebraska Football 2022
This was absolutely the most inexplicable call of Frost's tenure. I was feeling fantastic after Casey Thompson made that incredible throw and the boys ran it in for a touchdown to go up 11. Then just instant deflation with the onside kick. I'm sure the players felt the same way. They literally burst their own bubble. Northwestern wasn't moving the ball that well, why gift them 30 yards? It was just the dumbest call. At least make the other team earn a touchdown.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Sat Aug 27, 2022 3:23 pm Explain, after taking a 28-17 lead in the 3rd quarter, the decision of an on side kick? After today, I solidly believe Scott Frost is the problem. I've denied it at every turn in the past, but in his prove it year, he definitely proved that he doesn't know how to win games.
I'm not even that confident they'll win the next two games now. If they're close at all, then I will have already written the season off. Beyond the (almost) guaranteed wins the next two weeks, I now only see Rutgers, Indiana, and Illinois as tossups. And they might only win one or zero of those. Terrible time to be a Husker fan.

Re: Nebraska Football 2022
After a deep breath, I do think Casey Thompson has the juice. Both his interceptions were due to dropped/tipped balls an frantic play-calling. Even if the balls were a little high or behind, if you're a receiver and the ball hits you in the palms, its on you if you don't catch it.

I pretty much agree with everything you’re saying here. NU will likely win their next two games, before playing Oklahoma in Lincoln on Sept 17th. This game is pivotal. The Huskers lose that game (and at this point there is no reason to believe they won’t)- they’re 2-2 heading into conference play..and a likely 4 to 5 win season..Busguy2010 wrote: Sat Aug 27, 2022 3:38 pmThis was absolutely the most inexplicable call of Frost's tenure. Frost should resign when he gets back on U.S. soil tomorrow . Call a press conference and hand the job over to Mickey Joseph as interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Enough is enough.

People should just stop going to the games, their should be no more than 50k in the stadium next Saturday, with large swaths of empty seats in the upper grandstands. I feel like we've been duped. Not a good football program and hasn't been for a while.

I guess I should've expected this. After all, Nebraska's done pretty poorly since Scott Frost taking the job as head coach in 2018. One thing is clear: He ain't no Tom Osborne and he certainly isn't Bob Devaney.

Huskers defeated by Northwestern in 2022 season opener
Even with a bit of Irish luck, the Huskers still couldn't find the end of the rainbow.
Nebraska football fell short Saturday against Northwestern in the 2022 season opener. The Huskers lost 31-28 against the Wildcats in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium. Texas transfer Casey Thompson, making his first start at QB for Nebraska, completed 25 of 42 passes for 355 yards and one touchdown – the most passing yards ever by a Husker quarterback in his debut.
Tanner Lee previously held the record for 238 passing yards in the Sept. 7, 2017 game against Arkansas State. Thompson also set a Nebraska record for most passing yards in a season opener, besting Taylor Martinez’s 354-yard record in 2012 against Southern Miss. Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda caught a 32-yard touchdown pass on his first reception as a Husker, totaling 120 receiving yards throughout the game.

Re: Nebraska Football 2022
After doing some chores and taking a nap, I'm still in total disbelief how atrocious this loss is (whats new?)... And I can't believe we're talking about it as a loss... After going up 28-17 I cheered and then took a sigh of relief, as I truly believed the 11 point lead was good enough to slow down and take control of the game. I left the room to quickly use the facilities and came back to see something that just cannot be explained (the onside kick). In that moment, Scott Frost once again demonstrated his uncanny ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
Even all the words I've typed today can't begin to explain how perplexed I am how the Huskers lost the game.

Northwestern kicks off college football season with win over Nebraska in Ireland, more drama from Week 0
The college football season kicked off Saturday with 14 matchups across the board, from a Big Ten opener in Ireland in FBS to a SWAC vs. MEAC showdown in Atlanta in FCS. Nebraska has now lost three straight season openers and is 5-21 in one-possession games under Frost. Last year, all nine of Nebraska's losses were by single digits.

Re: Nebraska Football 2022
Oh boy - Frost and his choice of an onside kick was big discussion on ESPN radio this morning. Lots of discussion on his future and the Frost football history at NU of finding a way to lose. They had a piece where they say who had a bad week…and they purposely excluded Frost and the Huskers from that discussion.
Then I was reading an article about Wyoming’s bad loss to Illinois yesterday and there was this line in the article, “I’d imagine Scott Frost’s flight home from Ireland after Nebraska’s loss to Northwestern was the only one that felt longer for a head coach than Bohl’s charter from Champaign to Laramie.”

"If I had it over, I wouldn't have made the call."
Frost answers tough questions after Northwestern loss
Frost vows to right the course after losing to Northwestern in 2022 season opener
Moments after his ninth loss in the last ten games, Nebraska Head Coach Scott Frost took the heat, and found himself having to answer questions about his future with the Huskers. "Would you consider stepping down as head coach?", asked a reporter. "No, absolutely not. I love Nebraska," said Frost. "I'm gonna fight with the guys as long as I can fight." Those words rang familiar to the thousands of Husker fans who made the trip to Ireland, and thousands more who watched from the State Fair, a favorite bar, or their familiar couch only to see Nebraska lose to Northwestern 31-28 in the Aer Lingus College Football classic in Dublin, Ireland.

Twitter Reacts to the Onside Kick Heard ’Round the World
From football minds to minor league baseball teams, everyone found a way to weigh in
Leading by 11 in the third quarter, Nebraska football coach Scott Frost called for an onside kick. "At that point in the game, I thought all the momentum was on our side," Frost said. "I thought if we got it, we could end the game." But Nebraska didn't recover the ball. Northwestern scored the final 14 points of the game for a 31-28 win in Ireland that sent Husker faithful on a long plane ride home. Twitter reacted both in the moment, and well after the game, to the curious decision made by NU's hot seat coach.

Re: Nebraska Football 2022
I'm at the point where I think even Mike Riley was better than Frost. Pelini and Callahan definitely were better. Frost just doesn't have it, at least not at this level (Power 5). He looks to be in over his head. This has been 5 years in the making, Nebraska fans are more than patient , thank you . If you still can't get it done after 5 years it's not meant to be. Nobody gets 5 years to fix something anymore, not these days, 3 years is what most major college coaches get to right the ship. This program appears to have regressed.nativeomahan wrote: Sun Aug 28, 2022 1:43 pmHeck, he isn’t even close to being a Frank Solich! (58-19) Or Bill Callahan (28-22). Or Bo Pelini (67-27). Re: Nebraska Football 2022
Oh, to miss the mid to late 90's Huskers. Or even the early 2000's. Actually, any time we could at least appear in a bowl game! They've tumbled to a low I never thought I'd see in my lifetime here. And to have it continue to be so damn shitty just makes it worse.
My prediction for next weekend's game is we could win... maybe by a lot. There will of course be those that try to say they've turned some corners, looked great, etc. But honestly if they can't convincingly beat ND State, then it's even worse than I thought. Unfortunately they could win by 20+ points and it will mean little to me.
Not sure who they will go after for a new coach at the end of this season (although if Frost pulls some more |expletive| like he did in the first game he may be shown the door mid-season). However, it seems like the choices go backwards in quality. I'll be the first to admit I was thinking when he came onboard it was an awesome victory for Nebraska as a whole - the team and the fans. I felt his performance at Central Florida was a key indicator of what he could do with a program... and CFU sucked! He should have had so much more to work with here.
Hate to be a "negative Nancy" but as many have said, it's the same old record with the same predictable ending. Granted it's one game with 11 more to go, I do WANT them to perform well and win games. But at this point in time it's hard to be optimistic at all when you've seen the same car wreck over and over again.

Nebraska Husker fans remain resilient following season opener loss
The Huskers lost Saturday's game by 3 points despite a strong lead earlier in the game
As Nebraska Huskers fans are probably painfully aware, the first football game of the season didn’t quite get off to the greatest start. The Huskers lost Saturday’s game by 3 points despite a double-digit point lead earlier in the game. For fans, it wasn’t just disappointing, it was also deja vu.
The Huskers will return home for their home opener next Saturday in Lincoln against North Dakota.

The AD is dammed if he does and dammed if he doesn’t. Fire Frost now (or wait until the last leaves fall in November) and Frost walks much like his predecessors…with a huge golden parachute, and the school then has the unenviable task of finding someone to replace him, put their coaching team in place, and everyone waits patiently through a nearly guaranteed 3 more years of a losing record. Or…
Keep him, and force everyone to slowly watch the rich legacy of NU football (and of Scott Frost personally) drip, drip, drip into dusty history books.
Much like the Saturday scoreboard, it’s a lose/lose hobsian proposition.

I agree with most of the sentiments here too. I'll add that a team that can not run the ball in the B1G isn't going to be a contender. The passing game looks to have potential but so what with 100 yards on the ground most of which came on one play. Also anyone now thinking Chinander should've been sent packing with Scott's other buddies? He had absolutely no answers for Northwestern's offensive scheme...especially after halftime. There's more talent on the D-line(though no depth)and still zero QB pressure. Oh and apparently we need a tackling game coordinator.
Even with the unfathomable onside kick there were still chances to win this game. Receivers have to catch the ball like a defense has to tackle. Also head scratching was Whipple's game ending call to throw it over the middle to the least athletic guy on the offense.
If this Titanic of a program is indeed headed for the iceberg of another losing season why even wait 'til after the Iowa game loss?

Re: Nebraska Football 2022
There's a clause in his contract that makes his buyout significantly lower after October 1st. So he will be the coach until at least then. But if I'm honest, I think he's already lost the team and his coaches. There should be two more wins the next couple weeks, and I don't think Trev Alberts even expects a win vs Oklahoma. So assuming they go into Indiana at 2-2, I think this is what decides his job: They MUST beat Indiana at home, beat Rutgers on the road (I think they give him a loss at Purdue), and beat Illinois at home. At that point they'd theoretically be 5-7 with ONLY 1 win to go for a bowl. So if he wins one of Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Iowa, I think he probably keeps his job.
My confidence in that happening? Not very high. If he loses against Indiana at home, I think they pull the trigger the morning after. Mickey Joseph would be the interim. I hope it doesn't go that way cause I want them to win, but if they don't, that is how I see it going.
Man, if only Scott Frost hadn't sabotaged the team (again) against Northwestern, there'd be a much better vibe for Nebraska Football.

Re: Nebraska Football 2022
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again- a 6 win regular season, non winning record and minimum requirement for bowl eligibility is NOT enough. Frost needs a WINNING regular season to keep his job imo. And this means 7 regular season wins..
This said, what are the odds of the Huskers winning 7 games this year? I know it’s only after one game..But right now I’d say, at max, there is a 20% chance of a 7 win regular season. And I’m being generous. The safe bet, is 4-5 wins and I believe there is an 80% probability of that happening at this point..And what does that mean?-
Bye bye Scott Frost..
I’ll also say, I can see a scenario, where if NU gets outplayed and out-coached by North Dakota this Saturday and loses their home opener..forget the cheaper buy out- he *could* be fired going 0-2 to start this season. Extreme? Yes. Will that happen? Probably not. But- it wouldn’t shock me…

I used to think 6-6 was enough... It would have been enough, and that would have meant they won every game they were "supposed to" win. But now they don't have that leeway. Now they have to win a game they're "not supposed to" win. And now I think Scott Frost has to "prove it". They have to win all the rest of the games they're "supposed to" win, plus win TWO games they're "not supposed to" win.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Mon Aug 29, 2022 2:04 pm I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again- a 6 win regular season, non winning record and minimum requirement for bowl eligibility is NOT enough. IF they beat North Dakota, Georgia Southern, Indiana, Rutgers, Illinois, and "steal one" from Purdue and Minnesota each (I know, it sounds weird, but they've been the better teams lately), that would make for 7-5, and I think that would suffice. My confidence level all of that will happen? Maybe 25%.
And finally, North Dakota is no North Dakota State... If it were, I'd be supremely confident the 'Skers would get creamed.

Not even a 20% chance.

But would you sell your Husker soul for Urban Meyer?
