Re: Nebraska Football 2022
Like most of the state, I was pretty excited when Scott Frost was hired as head coach. I thought because Frost was/is from Nebraska, he'd know and understand how the program works. I thought since he did so well at UCF, he'd do just as well at Nebraska. But he didn't. He was all hype and no substance. So yeah, I'm cautious about Mickey Joseph. What if he turns out to be the same as Frost?

Re: Nebraska Football 2022
I don't know what to expect with Mickey Joseph. I'm glad he has roots in Nebraska. I hope it works better. I'm just happy to move on, and I hope the team has a new energy. Even to get back to "The best 3-9 team in the country" would be an improvement for the remaining games.
I hope this really is the absolute rock bottom. But we've seen rock bottom after rock bottom (so we thought), so I'm skeptical that it can only go up from here (again).
I just hope for them to make Oklahoma a respectable game. And for that matter, the rest of all of the games.

Keep their heads in the games so there are fewer mental mistakes. (Players and coaches here).
Goal for the rest of the season: no blow out losses and at least 1 win over a low ranked opponent.
Aspiration for this season would be close fought games all the rest of the way and wins over all the teams that are unranked and at least one B1G win over Wisconsin or Iowa.

Remember Joseph is only the interim coach. Trev was pretty clear he was beginning a nationwide search for the permanent coach.mrsticka wrote: Sun Sep 11, 2022 10:53 pm Like most of the state, I was pretty excited when Scott Frost was hired as head coach. Fairly certain he did a "nationwide search" before promoting Mike Gabinet to head coach at UNO.Greg S wrote: Mon Sep 12, 2022 9:27 am Remember Joseph is only the interim coach. Trev was pretty clear he was beginning a nationwide search for the permanent coach.

From the articles that I have read they are planning on doing a nationwide search, but aren't ruling out Joseph being the coach.

Re: Nebraska Football 2022
Yeah Trev said that yesterday at the press conference. With Joseph not even had been a coordinator previously at D1, I just don't see it. He's an incredible long shot to be the next head coach. It probably also hurts him that the coach that just got fired is a former Husker QB.skinzfan23 wrote: Mon Sep 12, 2022 9:44 am From the articles that I have read they are planning on doing a nationwide search, but aren't ruling out Joseph being the coach.

They should give him the rest of the season to prove himself and either stay or get enough on his resume that he can land well.
NU is not getting a big name coach. No one is going to sign on to that dumpster fire. Better to keep him and limp forward.

Re: Nebraska Football 2022
Mickey is a long shot, but has the opportunity to gain some valuable HC experience at a high level. And who knows maybe he will have some success, I think even if he can win 2 or 3 games it's probably more than Frost would of done. Mickey seems like a great motivator and it will be interesting to see how that plays out during the remaining 9 games.
According to the Internet Iowa State and Kansas coaches are both on Alberts radar. Also saw the Minnesota coach Fleck mentioned although I think he is doubtful. I actually think Matt Campbell at Iowa State makes a lot of sense. He turned around lowly Iowa State can he do the same at Nebraska?

Long Shots: Meyer, Luke Fickell, Mark Stoops
Not sold on: Campbell, Leipold
Who should be considered: Dave Aranda, Bill O'Brien
edit: Mickey if he can somehow salvage the defense.

Not sold on Matt Campbell either. It took him 7 tries to finally beat Iowa.

Re: Nebraska Football 2022
I don't really dive deep into this part of Husker football... But I have to assume its not a very coveted job. So my first thought is not someone exciting. Some of my first thoughts are along the lines of Brett Bielema and Ed Orgeron. or Some NFL reject HC like Lovie Smith (I know he's with the Texans, but lets be honest...) or Dan Campbell of the Lions... I really have no clue. All I really am sure of is I really don't believe any coach that has experienced recent success will come here. So no Matt Campbell or PJ Fleck IMO... And I really wouldn't like Fleck as our coach.Coyote wrote: Mon Sep 12, 2022 11:59 am What do you think are the long shots to be the next HC? Who do you think should be considered?
Urban Meyer would be great if all we want to do is win. Maybe get back up to 9 wins on a 3 year contract... But really isn't realistic if "Nebraska values" is part of the qualifications. And I don't really think he would even want to come here for any amount of money.
I hope Mickey Joseph is good enough the rest of the season to give him a try. Its just I really feel Nebraska isn't one of those jobs that is a step up for anyone, even somebody who is having success at the G5, or FCS level, as proven by none other than Scott Frost. And even he only came here because he loves the program and wanted to return it to success. I'll bet ya a million bucks when he was offered, part of him was saying "I really shouldn't take this job".

It's more coveted than it was a year ago. With the moves in the last 12 months (Texas/OU to SEC, and USC/UCLA to Big 10), the top 2 conferences have really separated themselves from the rest of the power 5 (and everyone below that). Financially is just a huge difference, plus the stability. Then you throw in the fact that Nebraska is rolling in the NIL era with their collectives and how much the donors have stepped up in multiple sports.

Re: Nebraska Football 2022
I think the playoff expansion really threw the Big12 and Pac12 a buoy. A coach can do well in either of those conferences and make the playoff now. Even the best G5 teams have a shot. I'm not sure everybody is looking to leave those conferences as much as we thought a couple months ago. So if you're having success at Oklahoma State, or Oregon, there's less incentive to leave now, especially for the bottom feeder that Nebraska is now.
I just don't see the Huskers hiring anybody but a coach that is taking a step down, or keeping Mickey Joseph or Mark Whipple.

It helps them a little. PAC 12/10 folds if the Big 10 offers any one else from that conference. Regardless the tv money from either won’t be half of Big 10 or SEC.Busguy2010 wrote: Mon Sep 12, 2022 4:49 pm I think the playoff expansion really threw the Big12 and Pac12 a buoy. Re: Nebraska Football 2022
I feel pretty good about Mickey Joseph. I just watched his press conference :
I like how he kept on calling the players "kids", and especially his comment about Ochaun Mathis saying there is a "losing culture" and that he will correct that kind of talk from the players. And finally, he is an offensive mind, but he knows football is a simple game. When asked how he could fix the defense, he said something like "you have three or four down, or two or one high" (referring to Down linemen and safeties). Sounds pretty plain and simple.
I hope it works.

I think you pretty much nailed it. As a leader that is your job, to get things to seem simple so the players can just go out and enjoy playing and hopefully quit thinking about it.

Frost should have been gone after 2021. It's the rotten "boosters of substance" and ex players that have been part of the "Tradition Coalition" that want to sniff Tom Osbornes farts into perpetuity that have done more damage to this program than anything else since Solich's firing. heck, they were probably responsible for Solich's firing.
Wanting Pedersen. Wanting Frost in 2015 and 2018. I was always lukewarm on Frost. I was tepid based on people wanting him in 2015 when he only had a few years as Oregon's OC in a soft Pac-12. I never thought this would work in the Big Ten. I figured I might be wrong becuase football experts were saying how great he was after the undefeated season in 2017 at UCF, but the second I heard him speak at his opening press conference, I thought it was going to be an uphill battle. He came off as arrogant, but also came off as a little boy wearing his dads suit.
Then, he brings his whole staff from UCF. The opening game in 2018 against CU was a debacle of bad play calling and time management. I was told to sit back and let him learn and grow, but the same issues that plagued him in 2018 against Colorado popped up in games in every year after. It popped up against GA Southern.
The, you add in all of the things of him not working hard. rumors of him being an alcoholic and philanderer. I've heard some say he didn't put in 16 hour days....he put in 16 hour weeks. He wanted the accolades, but didn't really want to work hard. Personally, I'm glad he was exposed. I'm glad his legacy is ruined because he didn't want to put in the work.
Good riddance. flush the toilet of this turd and start over. His legacy is now the worst head coach in NU history and someone that's wore than Riley, Callahan, Jennings, etc. because he was a lazy piece of garbage.

I agree with most of what you said - I'll admit I was excited and hopeful when Frost started. But you're correct in saying the same |expletive| he did poorly at in year 1 and 2 was still showing up in year 5. I believe UCF was in relatively weak conference, but I do feel Frost did something amazing given what he had to work with at the time. How he came into Nebraska and sucked so bad is astonishing to me. Regardless of his hours put in (or not put in) you would think the staff and resources were available to keep that AT LEAST at 50% wins/losses. I mean he straight sucked the juice right out of the orange - it's been stated a million times he had the worst record at Nebraska and by far the worst in one-score losses.
In the 90's we (speaking on behalf of Nebraska) was a dominating powerhouse. Even in the 2000's they were pretty good. The late 2010's and early 2020's really make Nebraska look like the worst team in college football considering what it should have been.
If UNO didn't drop football when they turned Div 1 for hockey (which was done by Trev Alberts nonetheless) I would have been concerned that UNO could have beaten UNL in a football game.

Re: Nebraska Football 2022
I don't want to be that mean about him. Yes, he did suck, and yes, he is the worst coach in Nebraska history... But I remember when he was hired he was the hottest coaching candidate in the country, and we got him. Everybody was giving Nebraska "Way to go's!" after he was hired. It remains to be seen if it happens he is the failure, or if Nebraska Football is. I think he very well could go on to have success at a lower-tier school or in a coordinating position, and again in a few years enter the Power 5 coaching ring. I'm not personally angry at him. I know he loves Nebraska and it hurt him that he couldn't get it done. I saw it in his final press conference. The man cared. So I wish him nothing but the best.

I wrote a post a few days about what an acquaintance, who had been on the late 90s husker fb teams, had said he had heard about Frost. And then this popped up on social media and it is very much in line with what my acquaintance had said.

Older Husker fans will definitely remember when Nebraska and Oklahoma played the day after Thanksgiving. For many years, it was Thanksgiving football. More so than Dallas/Detroit. Especially during the Osborne/Switzer era.

I have zero expectations for this game.
But I will hazard a prediction anyway. I think reasonably the Huskers will allow a lot of offense, but I also think the Huskers will keep up decently... I think with a 30% chance of rain during the game, that could factor in. And with a few slippery balls and lucky bounces, it could be an ugly, but close game. In a vacuum, I will go Oklahoma 49-38.

Re: Nebraska Football 2022
Yeah, its a different feeling. I'll admit, I tuned out after the fumble on the first play of the second half, and Oklahoma went up 42-7, so I can only comment on what I saw. Its actually been a while since the Huskers have been curb stomped that bad.
My main takeaways are: Oklahoma is really good (they might go undefeated or 12-1), the defense played a little bit better for a little bit, the offensive line still sucks as much as ever, Mickey Joseph at least didn't spot Oklahoma an extra touchdown by taking timeouts at the end of the half, and he knew when to throw in the towel and put the backups in.
All in all, I don't think anybody was expecting improvement in the players. But I saw subtle improvements in play calling and game management. Offense looked bad because the Line was terrible, and Oklahoma's D line was great. This is a bad measure. I am actually looking forward to Indiana.
All I want now is for them to win the games they should win. In my book those games are Indiana and Rutgers. And I only hope they can beat Illinois and Purdue.

Re: Nebraska Football 2022
As one of the older guys on here, that has a pretty good memory of the Glory Days of the 1980s and 90s, when it seemed the state collectively hit the Pause button each Saturday when the game was on (the radio mostly, only a few games each year were televised), I can honestly say I am saddened to know that those Glory Days that went on for several decades and brought honest if simple joy to so many aren’t …coming …back. Kids and young adults of today will never get to experience what their parents and grandparents enjoyed each autumn.
Was this just bound to happen? Yeah, I think it was. NU rode the bubble a lot longer than it had a right to, but sooner or later even with a great House the foundation cracks and the windows warp and the homeowners start quibbling about what should be done. For everything there is a season. Beyond even the longest most beautiful autumns lies the winter of our discontent.
This isn’t a Porsche or Corvette with one bald tire or a tail light out. It’s time for 1-800-GOT JUNK.

Re: Nebraska Football 2022
I found the comment by the color commentator doing the game for FOX (Joel Klatt, former Colorado QB) who stated, basically, it was astounding to him, how far the Nebraska football program has fallen..considering they were the premier college football program in the country in the mid 1990’s..
It really is amazing and mystifying how far Husker football has fallen and seemingly, can’t get up..
How many times do they need to scorch the Earth before they finally get the wheels back on the track? (The rhetorical question of the past 21 NU football seasons of irrelevance and 5 head coaches later)…
Ciao..LiO…Peace
