Nebraska lands 2023 shooting guard Eli Rice, who calls Huskers 'a perfect fit'

Eli Rice knows more offers were coming. In the last three years, the shooting guard in the 2023 class has grown 7 inches to 6-foot-7. He saw a spike in college interest this summer. And he’s about to play his senior season at IMG Academy, which has produced 13 NBA players since 2005. Rice announced Wednesday that he's committing to Nebraska. The prospect from Hendersonville, Tennessee, chose NU over offers from Georgetown, Murray State, VCU, Rhode Island, North Carolina A&T and St. Bonaventure, and he sees no need to shop further. In the Huskers, Rice believes he’s already found the best program for his talent.

Normally I would be really impresses with what we are doing recruiting wise, considering how bad our record has been (though Hoiberg getting guys to the NBA helps). That being said I think NIL is playing a decent size factor in some of our recruiting successes.

I know many complain about NIL but NU, in multiple sports seemed to be excelling in this new world.

Battle in the Vault Matchups Set
Story LinksCampio Sports announced the matchups for the inaugural Battle in the Vault, which will take place at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Tuesday, Dec. 20.

In addition to the Huskers' contest with Queens University which had been previously announced, Mississippi State will face Drake, while Concordia will host Oklahoma Wesleyan. Start times and broadcast information for all three games will be announced at a later date, although Nebraska will play in the evening.

"When we decided to build this event, we were looking for a place that has pride in their teams and area," said Campio Event Organizer Jake Headrick "There is no fan base more loyal than the people of Nebraska and the teams coming to this event have great ties to the area and region."

While this event is not part of Nebraska's season-ticket package, 2022-23 Husker basketball season-ticket holders will have first opportunity to purchase tickets for Battle in the Vault with an exclusive presale beginning on Tuesday, Aug. 16 at 10 a.m. (central). General public on-sale is set for Sept. 1, at 10 a.m.

Tickets, which start at $24, are available on Ticketmaster.com and the Ticketmaster App for mobile devices. Battle in the Vault Tickets will not be able to be purchased through the NU Athletics Ticket Office.

Zeigler Joins Husker Coaching Staff

Nebraska Men's Basketball Coach Fred Hoiberg announced Wednesday that Ernie Zeigler will join the Husker coaching staff. Zeigler bring more than two decades of Division I experience to Nebraska, including six seasons at Central Michigan as a head coach. He spent the last seven years at Mississippi State, helping the Bulldogs to four postseason appearances between 2018 and 2022 under Ben Howland.

Zeigler also served as an assistant coach at Kansas State, Bowling Green, Pitt, UCLA and Detroit and has made eight postseason appearances as an assistant coach, including five NCAA Tournament trips. The 2005-06 UCLA team was the NCAA runner-up, while the 2001-02 and 2002-03 Pitt squads secured NCAA Sweet 16 appearances. He also played a role in a trio of regular season conference championships and a pair of conference tournament titles.

Opening Night with Husker Hoops Set for Sept. 30
Season-Ticket Packages for NU Men's and Women's Basketball on Sale Next Week

Basketball fans will get their first look at the 2022-23 Nebraska men's and women's basketball teams and get a special performance from rising rap star EST Gee as part of 2022 Opening Night with Husker Hoops. Opening Night with Husker Hoops will take place on Friday, Sept. 30, and will feature introductions and scrimmages from both teams, remarks from Head Coaches Fred Hoiberg and Amy Williams, contests with members of both programs and more. The event will begin at 7 p.m. with PBA doors opening at 6 p.m. The event is free, but fans are encouraged to register for their free tickets in advance.

McPherson Suffers Season-Ending Injury

Nebraska men's basketball coach Fred Hoiberg confirmed Monday that redshirt freshman guard Quaran McPherson (Queens, N.Y.) recently suffered a season-ending knee injury. McPherson suffered the injury in training prior to returning to Lincoln for the start of the fall semester. An MRI by Nebraska's medical staff upon his return revealed the extent of the injury to McPherson's left knee. He will undergo surgery in the coming weeks and will start his rehab. According to men's basketball athletic trainer R.J. Pietig, McPherson's recovery is expected to be between six and eight months following surgery. McPherson is expected to make a full recovery in time for the start of the 2023-24 season.

The consensus when this schedule came out from the media was Nebraska got a tough Big 10 schedule. That seems to be said every year though. Is there such thing as an easy Big 10 schedule.

Hoiberg gave updates on the health of Quaran McPherson, who recently underwent season-ending surgery, as well as progress on Sam Griesel and Breidenbach as they work towards being back at full strength. Hoiberg also talked about the benefit of bringing in experienced players who have enjoyed success at the college level. All three of NU's Division I scholarship transfers bring postseason experience to the Husker program, including Juwan Gary (Alabama) and Griesel (North Dakota State) who both played in the NCAA Tournament.

The 2022-23 Huskers return two of their top four scorers for Coach Fred Hoiberg, who begins his fourth season at Nebraska. The returning contingent is led by senior forward Derrick Walker (9.5 ppg, 6.0 rpg) has started 48 straight games for the Huskers, while sophomore guard C.J. Wilcher (8.1 ppg, 2.3 rpg, 52 3-pointers) was the Huskers' sixth man for most of the 2021-22 season. Junior Keisei Tominaga averaged 5.9 points per game in his first season at Nebraska and comes off a summer where he averaged nearly 16 points per game for the Japanese National Team. Tominaga closed his summer with a 33-point effort against Australia.

NU has also retooled its roster with a trio of Division I transfers in Emmanuel Bandoumel (SMU), Juwan Gary (Alabama) and Sam Griesel (North Dakota State) and a recruiting class that ranked in the top 30 nationally by both Rivals and 247Sports. That group includes a pair of top-150 recruits in Ramel Lloyd Jr. and Jamarques Lawrence as well as junior college transfer Blaise Keita, who is the No. 4 overall player by JUCORecruiting.com.

Nebraska (#22) and Creighton (#22) women's teams are both in the preseason Top 25.

CORNHUSKER RUN

There are high expectations in the state of Nebraska. No. 21 Creighton has its first preseason ranking while No. 22 Nebraska was its first ranking since 2015. It's the first time in the history of the poll that both teams have been ranked in the same week.

"It's good to have Creighton and Nebraska in Top 25. It's good for the state," Creighton coach Jim Flanery said.

The Bluejays are coming off a great season when they advanced to the first Elite Eight in school history by knocking off No. 2 seed Iowa at home in the second round and Iowa State in the regional semifinals. Expectations are high this year.

"It says to our players that they put the program in a better position than we've ever been in," Flanery said. "That's good for them. I think they deserve it. They worked to get us to this point. I don't think it changes their approach."

I am not sure what it takes for Hoiberg to stay. I don’t think being one of the bottom two will allow him to continue.

I hope Hoiberg shows progress this year.
