Re: Nebraska Football 2022
Nebraska is in danger of becoming like Kansas. A team that's perfectly okay with losing season after losing season, then once in a blue moon, they have a winning season and it's a dream come true for fans and the players and it's considered a Cinderella run.

I have a revelation for you- The Nebraska Football of today has already became Kansas Football (and probably did sometime around the halfway point of the “Mike Reilly era”). In reality, Big Red is probably a step worse..
At least with Kansas, they still win championships in basketball. So they have that to hang their hats on in mens division one college athletics…

Re: Nebraska Football 2022
I didn't watch the game today, it looks like I didn't miss much. This team's defense is scary bad, I got the impression OU pulled off the horses in the second half and could of put up 70 if it wanted to. I don't see any quick fixes for NU's woes this could continue for years unless some genius Head coach is found and I'm not even sure if that person exists. The college football landscape has changed sorry to say and NU is facing that unpleasant reality. The losing is reaching unprecedented levels and is difficult to digest after having one of the premier programs for decades. Nebraska football is a mess.

Re: Nebraska Football 2022
Game was friggin over about 17 minutes in. At that point, I literally said out loud "how are they going to play another 43 minutes" or something like that. Oklahoma used like 30% of their potential to beat the |expletive| out of the Huskers, and that is very telling.Cermak wrote: Sat Sep 17, 2022 10:03 pm I didn't watch the game today, it looks like I didn't miss much. The Huskers can only hope to hang with the other bottom feeders of the Big10.
Only thing I feel good about is not any one person is shouldering the blame right now. There's no scapegoat now, the Huskers just suck, real bad. And that's not good for future prospects.

Re: Nebraska Football 2022
I moved to Nebraska in the fall of 2002 and being originally from Sdak, I knew of Husker ‘greatness’ but didn’t bleed Husker red and still don’t. But all I have heard from the ‘faithful fans’ since way back then was how great they were in the l1990s with their national championships and how they need to get back to that style of football and coaching and how they needed to find a coach who knew the Husker traditions and everything would be right with the Husker world. Well Nebraska just had their true Husker coach and things were worst than they ever were.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Sat Sep 17, 2022 8:24 pm

I read how some want a proven head coach, maybe even Urban..ugh. Maybe you all are looking for the wrong person or style. College football has changed radically in the last couple of years with the Transfer Portal and the NIL
I was watching the Michigan state/ Washington game last night. One commentator mention that the MSU head coach had said because of the Transfer Portal every position on his team is open to have some player transfer in and get that spot.
As to coaches being overlooked by lots of schools, the Washington coach Kalen DeBoer has been a college football coach since 2000 but only a head coach for 7 years of those yrs. The first 5 at university of Sioux Falls where he he won 3 national NAIA championships and one runner up and had a record of 67-3. Then he had several college assistant coaching jobs in several football programs, where he probably learn a lot and then Fresno state head coach before Washington came calling. Washington beat Michigan State last night handily.
So there is probably a college coach out there that has similar experiences and successes to DeBoer’s but he gets overlooked because he isn’t that ‘Name’ coach or hasn’t coached at that Certain level of college football.
Quit ‘reaching back’ to past glory, thus days are gone - build toward a new future.
We are the people our parents warned us about.

I think about everyone who follows Nebraska football has thought that at least once. The Texas recruiting pipeline dried up when we left the Big12 that's for sure.

Re: Nebraska Football 2022
Leaving the Big12 may not have helped in the ways we'd like to have seen, but it's hard to say where the conferences end up after all of the continued movement amongst the teams.
Unfortunately I think things are only going to continue to get worse - with NIL would you want to move to Nebraska to play football or would you rather move to the south or west coast if it was an option?
Nebraska should be able to be a great contender in the Big10. I don't know that's ever going to happen.

Re: Nebraska Football 2022
Nebraska has tried to do what you’re saying at least once since Frank Solich was fired- The Steve Pederson time as AD and his hiring of Bill Callahan as head coach. That failed and after 4 years both were out, Tom Osborne became AD, and did try to “reclaim past glory” when he decided to side with the fan base and hire Bo Pelini. That failed and after 6 years- both were gone. Now 2 AD’s and 2 Head Coaches later- we have the abyss the NU football program is in now.. I was not on board with the Bo Pelini hiring and thought Al Groh would have been the better hire in 2008..Uffda wrote: Sun Sep 18, 2022 10:45 amQuit ‘reaching back’ to past glory, thus days are gone - build toward a new future.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Sat Sep 17, 2022 8:24 pm

In any case, this program has now fallen into the depths of below Kansas in it’s futility. Since the firing of Solich, the Huskers have struck out 4 times hiring head coaches. For the sake of this football program and fan base, let’s hope Trev Alberts finds the 4 leaf clover and hires the “right guy” this time…

Re: Nebraska Football 2022
I'm sorry but I'm hearing a lot of emotional nonsense. Leaving the Big 12 is not the problem. Bad AD'S and bad coaching are irrelevant to what conference you play in. Now adapting to the Big 10 and understanding exactly what that means is part of it too. Frost stubbornly did not.
I also don't understand the "glory days" comments other than the knee jerk reaction of the fan base to expect to compete for national titles every year which in turn no doubt influenced the coaching turnover. So we agree Pelini was the best coach since Osborne? Did Solich get a raw deal? Yes, but was he ever really going to be "the guy"?(rhetorical question only). So we also agree firing Pelini was another appeasement to the "glory years" fan base? Or was it the results of another bad A.D. or both? Pelini is a great defensive coach(I think we can agree). Was he a great head coach? Perhaps not. Who still believes Frost just needed more time? Alabama went through 6 coaches since Bryant from '83 to '07 'til Saban. I think having the right A.D. is almost as important as having the right coach.
I don't think you can overstate how much damage Callahan, S.E. and S.P. did to the program. If you think this program is a dumpster fire then Nebraska is a perfect fit for the Big 12. The only chance Nebraska has to be relevant again is by being in the Big 10. Since 2014 Nebraska ranks 9th in the Big 10 in wins being out performed by Iowa, Michigan, Michigan St, Minnesota, Northwestern, Penn St, and of course Wisconsin and Ohio St. Since 2015 Indiana moves into 9th and Nebraska falls to 10th. Nebraska has had more talent than all but 3-4 of those teams. As awful as it is to be out performed by Indiana the last 7 years, Nebraska still has the facilities and resources to yet consistently beat the teams they should. Downgrading to a conference with weaker competition and substantially less media rights revenue is not the answer. That would be the death knell of Nebraska Football. It points back to coaching and bad A.D. hires.
Football at any level is a game won in the trenches. What do they say wins championships? Defense. What do the top Big 10 teams have in common. Sound defense and run the ball well. What did Frost fail to do? Before Grant, Nebraska's last 100 yard rusher was Ozigbo, a guy Frost did not recruit. I admit I was excited for the Frost hire too but I always had reservations about Chinander. The most shocking thing about Frost is he played on teams with a strong defense and running game. He tried to fit a square peg in a round hole. He focused too much on schemes instead of fundamentals and ignored the importance of power football.
Joseph has already made two big adjustments. Returning to fundamentals and dumping a coordinator not worthy of the power 5. We also know Joseph can recruit. He may not turn out to be the guy either but his changes already makes him a better head coach than Frost. I believe that Alberts could be the supportive A.D. that Jospeh needs. And if it's not Joseph taking the baton next year we don't even need a splash hire to get back to the "non-glory" Pelini mediocrity years of competing in the Big 10 West. Let's start there. I think only the fools who want Meyer expect a 1-2 year turn around to national relevance. It's not unreasonable, however, to fathom a winning season in 1-2 years. Iowa is third in the Big 10 in wins since 2014. All hope is not lost...
just Frost.

No I am not talking about all the AD/coaching changes you mentioned. That’s the past. I have seen many post ‘oh if only soilch, peleni etc.’
What I am saying is Husker fans are still living in the glory days of the 1990s. College football has changed since then and Nebraska fans keep looking back. Yeah there were some iffy hires BUT when Nebraska finally hires that ‘favorite son’ it ends up being a TOTAL DISASTER and still I see fan posts ‘well if we only could go back to…”
Sorry - those days are gone. Put those trophies on the top shelf and move on.

Move onto what exactly? Continuing to hire a new coach and then fire them after 4 or 5 years when they don't meet expectations?

They need to build up infrastructure. It's going to be like the 50's and early 60's. The fans will go for the fun of it, the coaches will need to recruit farm and ranch kids who may not play football at the elite high school level, so training people and supporting small town coaches will be key. Along that line, these damn recruiters are going to have to watch film of that kid from Scottsbluff who isn't a star, but works hard and dreams of a red jersey. Those were the kids Devaney put around Johnny Rodgers. They peaked in college and went on to farm, bank, sales, etc jobs outside of football. They bled husker red and gave TO the back up he needed during those years when he just couldn't beat Switzer.
See the next generation of those guys now?

Re: Nebraska Football 2022
I sent UNL an email last year asking about trying out to be a kicker... we were missing short field goals left and right which should NOT be a problem for such a school.
Anyway, whoever replied back to me told me there's an age limit - Yes, I'm now 47 but I have a feeling he straight up lied as there was recently a story online about a guy who was almost 50 that was playing college football.
Maybe they didn't take me seriously - but considering the way we've been playing the last few years you would think they'd keep an open mind.

Re: Nebraska Football 2022
Honestly you can't really compare the two overall. At Kansas they just kind of sit back and let it happen. They bring in a new coach every fire years and that's about it. (Though they might have struck gold with their current one) There's no real uproar or focus from the fans. They really don't spend to make any changes. They drew less than 30k per game on average last year. There just is no focus on football by their fans normally (this year with being 3 and 0 is the exception)mrsticka wrote: Sat Sep 17, 2022 8:38 pm Nebraska is in danger of becoming like Kansas. Nebraska obviously draws 2 to 3 times KU. Is constantly talked about and analyzed by the fans. And gets millions from donors for facilities, NIL, buyouts and whatever else the athletic department needs.

Wow - congrats to Adrian Martinez as they’re going to beat the Sooners tonight! And they’re doing it on the road, handily!
Nebraska couldn’t keep him and we got whooped by the Sooners… in our home stadium.
Such a disappointment to see how far we have really fallen in the world of college football.

This was the game we always waited for him to have, but never did. Easily the biggest win of his college career. He did it mostly with his legs, but also threw no interceptions, if he can build off this game and stay healthy he could have a big big year.djc311 wrote: Sat Sep 24, 2022 10:18 pm Wow - congrats to Adrian Martinez as they’re going to beat the Sooners tonight! Kansas is currently 4-0, I'm sure Trev Alberts is watching the Kansas coach every chance he can. Anytime Kansas can start 4-0 is impressive.

I'd be rooting for them like heck if they didn't have that stinker loss to Tulane. Absolutely this is Adrian Martinez's showcase game. I didn't watch it, but stats-wise, it looks like he mostly won it himself. On the biggest stage too... I'm kinda jealous, imagine if Nebraska had good coaches...Cermak wrote: Sat Sep 24, 2022 11:31 pm This was the game we always waited for him to have, but never did. Easily the biggest win of his college career. He did it mostly with his legs, but also threw no interceptions, if he can build off this game and stay healthy he could have a big big year.

Yeah I think that’s a sign of how poorly the NU coaching staff was coaching the overall game/positions.djc311 wrote: Sat Sep 24, 2022 10:18 pm Wow - congrats to Adrian Martinez as they’re going to beat the Sooners tonight! And they’re doing it on the road, handily!
Nebraska couldn’t keep him and we got whooped by the Sooners… in our home stadium.
Such a disappointment to see how far we have really fallen in the world of college football.
Seriously - pathetic
Watched the last half of the Tenn/Florida game yesterday - Tenn held on to win and they are now 4-0. Their head coach Heupel replaced Frost at UCF and this is his second yr at Tenn. I also saw Washington beat Stanford to go 4-0 with their first yr coach.

It makes you wonder how the NU fans’ expectations made it harder for the students to do well?djc311 wrote: Sat Sep 24, 2022 10:18 pm Wow - congrats to Adrian Martinez as they’re going to beat the Sooners tonight! And they’re doing it on the road, handily!

Doc’s Diagnosis: Adrian Martinez Delivers vs. Sooners
Dr. Rob Zatechka breaks down the former Husker quarterback’s big run that essentially sealed Kansas State’s upset win
Former Nebraska quarterback Adrian Martinez was outstanding in Kansas State's 41-34 win Saturday over No. 6 Oklahoma in Norman. The numbers were impressive: 21-of-34 passing, 234 yards and a touchdown. On his feet, Martinez was even more impressive: 148 yards and four touchdowns on 21 carries.
In this Doc's Diagnosis presented by Centris Federal Credit Union, Dr. Rob Zatechka breaks down Martinez's big run that led to K-State's last touchdown of the game. The 55-yard gain came in the final three minutes as the Sooners, trailing by seven points, appeared to be on the verge of forcing a punt as the Wildcats faced third-and-16 at their own 41.

A lot of excitement for the game this weekend, I see. I only just now checked the line for Indiana, and the Huskers are favored by 5 points. Another nail biter on tap? I hope not. The combo of indiana's passing attack and Nebraska's abysmal defense scares me. I think it'll be similar to the Georgia Southern game, but I will say the boys pull this one out I hope.

Adrian Martinez has another Huge game this week against Texas Tech. This guy gets yards on the ground in chunks. We all saw flashes of brilliance when he was at NU, but this looks like a possible magical season for him, if he stays healthy. Staying healthy is the key for him.

Yes. Looks like he has a good supporting cast. He had 171 yds rushing and their top running back had 170 yds.Cermak wrote: Sat Oct 01, 2022 3:22 pm Adrian Martinez has another Huge game this week against Texas Tech. Re: Nebraska Football 2022
Yes...announcers on BTN were saying in the third quarter it was already the most penalized Big 10 football game this season. Anyways, it looked like for a little bit that this would be ANOTHER game the Huskers would snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. So I flipped to the Georgia-Missouri game to see if Mizzou would pull off the upset. At the end of this evening, Georgia won by 4, and the Huskers hold on to win 35-21.

Now the bigger task ahead is avoiding going 3-9 again or worse 2-10.

A wins a win. Take 'em when you can. The whole Big10 West seems wide open this year. Any team that gets hot and finds a rhythm can win it this year.
