I beg to differ about the KETV piece as most everyone I see has KETV after their name (screenshot included).

And I think there is more to it than Vonn's response. Brandi Petersen, David Earl and Todd Andrews decided to leave KETV too, but announced their departure. As a manager, I also share that someone quit without more detail.

Just my two cents.

Dave Zawilinski announced on his Facebook page that he is leaving Daybreak and will be helping launch a new 3 pm newscast.

Are all the local stations working on becoming 24 hour news stations like CNN/Fox News/MSNBC???

Speculation: the local stations need programming for the non network hours. Syndicated shows like Big Bang are over exposed and others like Simpsons and Seinfeld are just long in the tooth and dull so they are not a great path. News, especially diluted happy talk news like in the day time is profitable compared to the high cost of syndication.

I'd like to think Omaha is a happenin' town, but we don't have that much going on. Can we not have a news-off to see who can repeat the same non-stories the most? Spend the time wasted in preparing for unnecessary newscasts and instead actually dig into stories, challenge local officials, question the status quo. heck, partner with the Nebraska Examiner and actually get into the meat of what's going on and give them some airtime.

I have the answer to the 'where's the content' question: Six'll run with whatever hot news is happening in other markets with a Gray station. One day last week, out of the first three stories, Big Six ran one from Jackson, MS then one from Memphis. Both Gray markets. No relevance to Omaha. Not to mention Gray's consumer watchdog Rachel DePompa with common-sense, third-grade level content with no connection to Omaha.

It's not just Six. Hearst's Channel 7 is in bed with Consumer Reports, the Cleveland Clinic and the Hearst in-house Rossen Report. And don't get me started on Matter Of Fact. Channel Third's owner, Scripps runs fifteen-minute long-form stories. Serese can run to Starbucks for her espresso while the segments are running.

With all this mandated, pre-produced content, they can cut their commercial rates (and political ad$ are icing on the cake).

Speaking of comings/goings, Vanessa Villafuerte gone from 3 after less than a year. I know God don't make junk, but she always struck me as a Russian sex robot--sorta like Katya from Archer.

I figured that was the case with Stone. Hadn’t seen her on air at KETV in nearly 2 months..

Usually when these on air reporters/anchors leave, they’re pretty quick to announce their new found job in a bigger market. Here, it seems, was a relocation. It’ll be interesting to see if Ms. Stone pops up on TV news again.. My instincts tell me yes. But we’ll see and good luck to her after 8 years in Omaha…

I turned on the Channel 6 5 o’clock news and for a moment I wasn’t sure what channel I was watching, between the still new to me anchor set and the fact that longtime Channel 3 co-anchor Craig (Greg?)Negreti was back on air.

She hasn't Facebooked or Instagrammed since October, and the last posts gave the impression that she was setting herself up to be an 'influencer' (gack). Nothing wrong with that on its face--Jennifer Zeppelin did that-- but Jennifer retired, Alexandra is in the prime of her money-making years.

This says two things: 1. Journalism is not a career anymore, and 2. Being an influencer seems to be, at least it does to her generation. Myself, I think it has the staying power of an Avon or Amway MLMer, but power to her.

I see that Ian Swanson's last Day at KFAB is at the end of the week. I haven't heard any details yet, just a blip of a mention of this on the radio this morning.

I will listen to this when I get a chance to see if it says any more.

Something in politics. Running for office with a newborn and a 2 year old is not a good mix. He's only 31. Plenty of time for office later.

It’s certainly in his ambitions. He already ran for legislature a few years ago. We’ll see

I was dumbfounded that none of the 3 main TV stations in Omaha went with their lead meteorologists for the severe weather outbreak last evening. None of them! I mean this is the first severe weather event of the year and two of the channels, (channels 3 and 7) went with rookies. The poor guy on KETV had no idea how to pronounce some of the smaller towns in the area. The guy on KMTV seemed to do a better job. Sorry I can’t recall his name but he has improved a lot since he first went on the air last year and looked like he was still a wet behind the ears high school senior.

Chris Swaim the chief weather person at KMTV has left for a job in Baltimore. He wasn't in Omaha very long, I thought he was pretty good. He's in a larger market now and probably better opportunities professionally.

So goes the revolving door of the Omaha TV market..

Unfortunate..

As far as the live “severe weather” coverage yesterday evening, at least KETV broke in on YouTube with Anthony and their live TV anchors.. WOWT? They went “live” on YouTube- but just silence, no commentary and the radar on the screen. He!l, why even bother? Lol…

I honestly don’t mind it if the “rookies” get a crack at reporting/tracking the severe weather.. They’ve got to cut their teeth at some point..

And hopefully learn from the experience so they’re better the next time…

I mean it is a Friday night, an evening most of the main talent often has off as it is especially at KETV where they run their main talent on Sundays. It also wasn't projected to be, nor did it end up being that severe of an event. WOWT actually benefited by that last night as despite their decision not to break into jeopardy, Koeller is a much better broadcasting met than Roehler (unless you think it is a beauty contest).

Anthony Copeland may be their newest meteorologist, but he has been here since December of 2021 or basically a year and a third. If he doesn't know the names of towns in the area at this point that is on him and KETV. His description of radar indicated 2" hail as "2 sized hail" (when it probably wasn't actually 2" hail either) was not a highlight of the evening.

To me a person that's a meteorologist should also be knowledgeable in the local Geography they are reporting on. They both go hand in hand.

Some of these weather folks just need to buy Nebraska and Iowa maps at Barnes & Nobles and get more familiar with all the small towns around Omaha and Lincoln.

To me a person that's a meteorologist should also be knowledgeable in the local Geography they are reporting on.
Agreed. You absolutely need to have a good understanding of every county and every city/town in your coverage area. With that said, a map won't help you with pronunciation and we have some odd ones in Eastern Nebraska. I don't blame a person that just moved here (and in this case Copeland didn't just move here) for not knowing Beatrice, Norfolk, Prague, or out of the market places like Kearney Cario, etc. That is where the meteorologist needs to put extra effort into learning places, presumably with the help from someone at the station.

Edit: the AP also (or at least used to) but put a helpful pronounciation guide. https://web.archive.org/web/20101006212 ... iation.htm

I blame Randby for this, he should have sat him down on week 1 or 2 to go over all the correct pronunciations. And then quiz him on them periodically.

Edit: the AP also (or at least used to) but out a helpful guide. https://web.archive.org/web/20101006212 ... iation.htm
I blame Randby for this, he should have sat him down on week 1 or 2 to go over all the correct pronunciations. And then quiz him on them periodically.
I’m sure Bill sees that asa great use of his time.

How many long term locals say Giles road one of 3 ways? Childs, Guy-les, or Jy-les.

I'm not yet ready to throw Copeland under a bus yet.

I didn’t watch him often, but I liked him
Agreed. Chris had a very professional demeanor and delivery style, and didn’t buy into the practice of over hyping weather events.

At the Child Saving Institute's fundraiser; Julie was the emcee.

Fox42 is throwing in the towel on local news: they're letting all of their local reporters go, and eliminating the 9:00 pseudo-local newscast entirely.

I'm hearing they'll air some sort of national syndicated news program in that time slot instead.

I don't think any Omaha station's news offering gets above five digits in viewership.
