And I'll be driving through Colorado and Western Nebraska on Wednesday. It would be fun to see some snowflakes, or at least the cold temperatures that go along with them.

Any rain/storm potential has gone **poof** for early next week on the most recent model runs since temps have trended hotter and the front will move through slower (and consequently there will likely be capping issues - like normal this year).

Still maybe some evening/nighttime rain/storms this coming Thursday and Friday night.

No comment on that amazing frickin' rain this morning? NWS reported .58" at Eppley, but I swear what I got had to be at least twice that. It was very, very heavy and there was some amazingly close CG lightning.

Yeah, south of I-80 many areas had near or in excess of an inch of rain.

Maybe a few severe storms in the area later this afternoon into this evening too. Odds are higher to our south and east, but still possible here too.

It won’t be in the 90’s or 100, but the extended forecast calls for several days of highs in the low 80’s into the first week of October.. Just warm enough for a few more pool days…

I might be in the minority, but I love the heat and hate to see it go. Once the highs drop below 70 my seasonal depression ramps up.

I love that we got one more 100° in so late.

I'm delighted to have avoided that shot of hot weather. On the way home from Colorado right now, went from mid 70s there and coming home to open window weather is amazing. It's 54 in Ogallala right now.

I think I now have visual proof that the OmaDome isnt just Omaha lore, but is a real physical thing. Driving the whole length of Nebraska today, it was solid gray clouds and the temperature never broke 59. Then as we approached GI, I said, "I wonder how it can be 67 degrees in Omaha right now" and the person I was with without hesitation said "look over there where you can see the sun coming out, I bet that's Omaha. As we drove along, that 100% proved to be the case. I was astonished that driving through all of Nebraska we saw nothing but solid gray skies, and we come to Omaha and its the ONLY patch with sun coming through. And the explanation was so simple, it was in fact the OmaDome that we all jokingly or not so jokingly refer to, and I saw it.

So lets discuss the OmaDome... What really causes it? Concrete? Pollution?

What does it do? Obviously can cause higher temperatures than surrounding areas. It seems most times we have a solid storm headed our way, it dissipates as it approaches us And at the same time, it seems like the storms we get, we get at odd and unexpected hours. But scientifically how would the contributing factors affect the weather we get here in the city?

How does it do it?

I’ll take a non-scientific stab at an explanation. Maybe it’s the terrain of the area coupled with the convergence of hills and river/stream valleys, including the Platte, Elkhorn, Missouri, and Papio creek valleys, and throw in the urban heat island effect, plus a larger population of people who notice when storms hit or miss them. But more than likely, it’s just the huge scale and randomness of the of the different air lows at many different levels in the atmosphere and jet stream.

It felt pretty good for 87, but 87 is still a lot hotter than I like, and that is still 11 degrees above normal. I will never ever root for above normal temperatures past this time of year. We need to invert that number now. 78 is better than 87. 87 is Summer, 78 is Fall, and it's Fall now so if you don't mind, Summer, don't let the door hit your arse on the way out.

And on a side note, I also want to have a challenge of sorts... Who waits the longest to turn on the heat?

I absolutely relished in the two days prior to today. I was using a window fan to suck in all I could of that cool and crisp air, and I got the house down to a solid 58 at its lowest during that time, To me that felt amazing.

This upcoming string of nights will be getting pretty dang cool. Into the 40's, maybe even well into the 40's. I think fall is here to stay (I hope). I will watch Bill's extended forecast tonight, but I don't think there will be too many warm days left to come. I get the feel our first freeze has a good chance to be on schedule this year.

Hurricane Ian might make a Tampa visit mid-week. They haven’t set a definite path yet but we will be, at this time, on what they call the ‘dirty edge, so rain and wind. The atmosphere around here is a lot like Omaha when they are predicting a major blizzard. People rushing to stores to stock up on groceries and water.

On a side note, I received an email from Home Depot today telling me about their new snow equipment — “ We Found These Snow Equipment Options For You”. Wrong storm. 😂🤪😂

Hurricane Ian is growing in size and strength as it barrels towards the United States. The storm is expected to bring widespread power outages and life-threatening storm surge along the west coast of Florida. CBS News national correspondent Manuel Bojorquez joins us with the latest from Fort Myers.

I am so glad we are not in Tampa area, but here in Omaha, not raining…

Hurricane Ian causing conditions to rapidly deteriorate along southwest Florida coast

Hurricane Ian – now a stronger and “extremely dangerous” Category 4 storm – has begun lashing Florida with major flooding and ruinous winds as it advances on a large swath of the state’s west coast with the potential within hours to inflict catastrophic floods and life-threatening storm surge.

So as of 10 am Th - Ian has turned into a Cat 4-5 with winds around 155 mph and looks to be coming to shore around Ft Myers with possible storm surges of 15+ feet. Then Ian is going across FL through Orlando area and out by Daytona - but it could shift again.

Around Tampa-St Pete, they are predicting 10-25 inches of rain depending on location. Storm surge isn’t a big concern up in st Pete, Tampa and north thru hudson fl. Actually the opposite is happening in a couple of the bays around Tampa where the water has been ‘sucked’ out.

We use to say Omaha had a dome when weather went around us. My daughter says Tampa uses Voodoo as we have dodge a couple in the past few years.

Nope today just been hanging out a home. Off and on light showers and Breezy but that’s suppose to change to heavier showers and a little more wind in the next hour or so. Daughter and granddaughters are hanging out at their house. Her husband is a firefighter in Lakeland so I think he will be on duty for like 4 days straight.

Tampa suffered very little effects from Ian. Hurricane shifted farther east, so my area didn’t get the 12-20” of rain. We had wind blowing 30-40 mph and some areas of Tampa lost some trees due to the wind and saturated ground.

Some areas around Orlando received 20” of rain - one article labeled it a 1000-year rainfall.

And of course, Fort Myers will take a long time to recover.

Now we're really talking my kinda weather at the end of the forecast. Next Thursday looks like low 60's, with a low into the 30's. Then Friday they are trending even cooler only into the 50's. So I can imgine we are on frost watch this time next week. And maybe our freeze will come on time this year (14th-17th).

Absolutely devastating storm, this Ian. We visited Sanibel Island back in 2020, right before the pandemic. Really neat place. It's sad to see it absolutely destroyed and residents being stranded.

Not trying to be insensitive to the situation, but with a massive storm like this, are there going to be weather affected migrants from Florida moving north? We saw some of this with New Orleans; this type of devastation is life changing. It always astounds me the resiliency of people affected by these types of weather events.

Frost advisories, freeze warnings take effect across Nebraska
Nebraskans woke up to colder temperatures on Friday, with much of the state in a frost advisory.

NORFOLK, Neb. -- Nebraskans woke up to colder temperatures on Friday, with much of the state in a frost advisory. All but three of Nebraska's 93 counties were either in a frost advisory until either late Friday morning or early Saturday morning. A freeze warning goes into effect for much of eastern Nebraska and parts of north central Nebraska until Saturday morning. The National Weather Service advises taking steps to protect tender plants from the cold. To prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes, they should be wrapped, drained or allowed to drip slowly, NWS officials said Friday morning.

NWS also advises draining in-ground sprinkler systems and covering above ground pipes to protect them from freezing. Statewide lows are projected as far down as 27 degrees Saturday morning for places like Albion, Falls City and Ord. Areas such as the Panhandle could see some precipitation, though communities like Sidney could see temperatures bounce back up into the 70s this weekend.

Checking the forecast one last time before bed, it looks like the NWS is holding that Omaha will not get down to 32. Just barely, but the trend for today ended on it barely missing 32. Not that that matters, because for most of us, this will effectively be the first freeze whether we can record it or not. If in the morning my outdoor thermometer shows that it recorded a 32, I'll call it for my own records. October 8th would be the earliest since I've kept track in 2013.
