Buffett's conglomerate closes $11.6B Alleghany insurance buy

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Warren Buffett's company completed its largest acquisition in years Wednesday with its $11.6 billion purchase of the Alleghany insurance conglomerate.

The purchase announced in March will further expand Berkshire's sizeable insurance operations and add a few more companies to its stable, including a steel fabricator and toy company owned by Alleghany.

In many ways, Alleghany is similar to Berkshire. Buffett's Omaha, Nebraska-based conglomerate owns Geico, General Re and a number of other insurance companies, but it also owns BNSF railroad, several major utilities and an eclectic assortment of dozens of manufacturing and retail companies, including Precision Castparts, Dairy Queen, See's Candy and NetJets.

Alleghany shareholders received $848.02 cash per share as part of the deal.

While it's a massive insurance conglomerate, I think it's companies are diverse enough within the insurance industry (they own property/casualty, reinsurance, life, bond insurance companies) that picking up someone like Alleghany, or other smaller insurance company, isn't going to cause anyone to blink an eye. Now if they were trying to buy one of the top 5, let's say, property, casualty providers, I could see regulators stepping in.

Understood, but considering the average life span let alone being of sound mind for most in their 80’s.

Agree, I would expect a smaller crowd next year, would not be shocked if it eventually gets moved to the UNO arena. Warren was who they came to see, he’s a Rock star in the financial world . It had to end sometime. A great run though.

Definitely. Berkshire without Warren is just another investment company IMO.

They're not going anywhere. Small corporate office with limited people anyway. Abel is based out of Des Moines at the MidAmerica Energy offices.

Warren is remaining chairman of the board, and I'm pretty sure his kid (as future chairman) will keep it here too. Part of the culture of the company...

In the 80s the ConAgra shareholders meeting was fun. Mike Harper had a passion & it was contagious. He introduced Healthy Choice Ice Cream & said he tasted it had knew it would sell because it was "Damn good!". They had tables with all kinds of food they made & it was a banquet. It drew hundreds of shareholders.
Now it's virtual.

I'm not saying that Berlshire's meeting will be virtual or that he's going to move it to Des Moines, though I'm sure they're drooling over the idea near the Raccoon River.

But times change. I just can't see the vibe remaining.
