That sequel would join the minority of pictures that satisfies well beyond its predecessor.
Those that lamented W. Dale Clark's demise on an architectural level...well I can't imagine anyone would put up a fuss here. As much as we'd all like to see the old U.P. lot developed getting a 350 plus footer here would do more to balance the skyline given how much Mutual will obscure The Woodmen and even the "twins".

At the very least they should have spent a half hour to remove the library name from the building before demo started. Leaving it up is just a finger in the eye of those opposed to the demolition.

Altering demolition as to not offend a group of people that are largely habitually outraged seems a bit much.

I know this has been stated before here, but the demo really appears to be fast-tracked..

I know the “official” groundbreaking for the Mutual of Omaha skyscraper is slated for the 3rd week of January..but I have to think, if this demo is completed by the week of Thanksgiving (which is not out of the question at all), Mutual could get a head start on construction 30-45 days in advance of the Photo-op groundbreaking date..

As always, if I get any early indications from the “Cryptic Rumor Department” I’ll definitely pass. It on..

PS- Thanks for posting the photo update :thumb: …

The more I look at this, the more I'm amazed how really small that library actually was on that block.

What's the plan for the block to the east of the library?

Short term, an a staging area for construction.

Medium term, an extension of the park.

Long term, maybe another tower for MoO or sold back to the city to be an even shorter tower. Neither will be anywhere near as tall the new MoO tower.

It is absolutely prime real estate. A 10-15 story condo seems like a no brainer (makes good use of the space, but doesn't block too much of the tower). Less than a half mile to basically everything downtown, right next to the new streetcar, and the view to the east overlooking the park would be amazing. Add in ground floor retail/restaurants and use the second floor as the new downtown library for a true dream come true.

A 10-15 story condo wont happen there! Why? Because people walk around naked in their apartments when they are 3 or more stories up. EMC insurance in Des Moises bought a development plot for this reason---because people were walking around naked in the 6 story Wilkons building and they were getting complaints. So when another adjacent property was being developed neatby(burned out Younkers) they squashed it with an all cash offer to the developer.

I think condos would rock in that space!!! I just doubt Mutual would want to deal with that after shelling out that kind of money on their building.

Or maybe don’t look in peoples windows? We’ve all seen naked people before if someone wants to drink a beer butt |expletive| naked in their condo that’s their life.

Or add a one-way reflective window tint to provide privacy. That’s what they did for the Broadmoor63 apartments near Aksarben.

I'm guessing the removal of 85 pilings will take most of the time from now through the end of year.

Wonder how deep they had to go for a 4ish story building like that.

Well, since they don't build them like they used to, probably 1,000 feet, LOL.

Pieces of former downtown library getting a new life
Cox Contracting Company got the task of demolishing the W. Dale Clark Library last year.

The Coxes -- John and his father before him -- have been doing construction work for a long time. “He started out with a cutting torch and a tow truck scrapping automobiles, and it was basically his living,” said John Cox, owner of Cox Contracting Company. John was 25 when he passed on -- by then, they were doing some heavy lifting for the railroads. “What my dad and I did was we cut up railroad bridges and took out railroad track and cut up train cars,” Cox said.

Fast-forward a quarter-century -- a low bid last summer won Cox Contracting the job of demolishing the W. Dale Clark Library to make way for the planned Mutual of Omaha skyscraper. And for 12 weeks starting last October, the job was done, no dynamite needed. “Some manual torching and a lot of mechanical demolition with shear excavators.” “We hauled about 1,750 tons of scrap metal out of there, and probably five to six thousand tons of concrete,” Cox said.

Repurposing pieces of the W. Dale Clark Library

Parts of Omaha's former downtown library will get new life -- thanks to recycling and diverting that waste from landfills.
