The Purdue , Illinois games are going to be harder than Indiana and Rutgers. Nebraska will need to turn it up another notch to win those.

Yeah, we likely just got by the two worst teams in the respective divisions. Any more wins from here on, will take something far beyond what we've seen this far.

Re: Nebraska Football 2022
I agree. To just skirt by the last two teams, combined with the Northwestern loss, tells me the Huskers are more in a fight not to be last in the West than they are in contention. Like you said, unless the team shows us something totally different, I'm still thinking this is more of a 3-9 team. They got their 3 wins, anything more is icing IMO. They're just not good.Stargazer wrote: Mon Oct 10, 2022 2:00 pm Yeah, we likely just got by the two worst teams in the respective divisions. If Nebraska wins Saturday at Purdue it will be the biggest win by the program in easily 5 years. Probably would have to go to 2016 season to find a bigger win.

Absolutely. It puts them one win away from bowl eligibility and a huge return. It also puts a big win on the road skin on the wall.Cermak wrote: Thu Oct 13, 2022 12:29 pm If Nebraska wins Saturday at Purdue it will be the biggest win by the program in easily 5 years. Re: Nebraska Football 2022
I just don't have a good feeling about this one. Purdue is pretty good, and they play up at home and at night. My gut tells me this will easily be a double digit win for Purdue. Not quite gonna predict the score yet, but I'll say that. I hope I end up being wrong.

I'm thinking 28-17 Purdue, unfortunately.

Re: Nebraska Football 2022
Okay, I feel a little more optimistic after looking at Purdue's past games. They've really skirted by in every win so far, and most of their stats are racked up against some pretty bad teams.
I predict a 28-21 Purdue win. But my hope is Nebraska has the ball last with a chance to tie, and does so. Then with a small amount of time left, the Huskers force a monumental special teams blunder and get the ball back with a short field, and kick a game winning field goal.

Nebraska is a 2 touchdown underdog to beat Purdue. It will most definitely be an upset I’d Nebraska is able to win on the road.

Re: Nebraska Football 2022
I don't really get why they're two touchdown dogs though. I mean, yes, Purdue has been known to pull some crazy stuff at home at night, such as blowing out Ohio State that one year... But so far this year, they haven't been world beaters. Purdue beat Nebraska by two touchdowns one time in 2018. The rest have been really close. If I were much of a betting man, I'd bet Nebraska. That bad feeling I had last night was a fluke. I feel like it'll be a one score game now.Greg S wrote: Fri Oct 14, 2022 6:24 pm Nebraska is a 2 touchdown underdog to beat Purdue. Yes, this is a winnable game in spite of the odds makers. Nebraska still has more talent and Purdue has injuries among their top two running backs and will be missing a key defensive player. Still, I think the Husker offense will need to show up and run the ball well to pull this one out.

Winnable? Yes. Based upon the season as a whole or the totality of the Frost years? Yes.
Post Frost, with M.J. and Busch coaching talent? Perhaps not.
Pathetic or hopeful...win or lose neither team will be out of contention for the BIG10 West.

Re: Nebraska Football 2022
I like how competitive the West is this season. Its not just Wisconsin, then everybody else.
With Illinois and their win today, the game tonight means either Purdue or Nebraska will join Illinois with the one game lead over everybody else. Though I believe Purdue and Illinois hold tie breakers as their losses are to east teams, whereas Nebraska's loss is to a West team.
If the Huskers win tonight, and win against Illinois, that gives them outright first place... A lot of hope riding on these next two games. Who would have thought? Quite a tall order though.

Tough loss for Nebraska, but the defense couldn't stop Purdue when they needed to. Trey Palmer had an amazing game. The team looks different since Frost left, a little more focused and more fight in them, just my opinion. The schedule just gets harder, anymore Nebraska wins will be very difficult to get but not impossible.

Re: Nebraska Football 2022
Dammit, that's the toughest loss so far this season. All they had to do was stop a quarterback who never runs, and then stop them on 3rd & 11. They had plenty of chances to get the ball back and win by 1 point.
I like Mickey Joseph's sideline presence and energy. I hate how long college football games take. Reviews on every dam play, and commercials at every frickin stoppage. And Matt Millen came in with a game plan to get in bed with Purdue. It was a great game but a terribly hard to watch product.

I am not sure it only gets harder. I think Purdue, Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota are similar.

Flip a coin- Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin..
The Huskers could win any of those games. But just as easily, lose any of them as well..
Tough loss for NU tonight. The Husker defense was pathetic; and made a good Purdue QB look like Tom Brady in his prime.. SMH…

Nebraska Football’s Next Head Coach: Weekly Power Rankings - October 18th
This will serve as my weekly power ranking list for who will be the probable next head coach for Nebraska. This list is not who I want to see become the next head coach. This list is who I believe will become the head coach at Nebraska.
Breaking News Lane Kiffin meeting with Nebraska!!!

Lane Kiffin as the next Husker head coach? Hmmm. There is certainly lineage there..
Anywho-
I would really like to see how this season with Mickey Joseph guiding the ship goes. I mostly like what he’s doing thus far..and I hope if he can guide this team into bowl eligibility, he would be given the same fair consideration for the next NU head coaching job as the Lane Kiffin’s of the world…

I suppose Kiffin is worth consideration but I think he's a bit more of a risky hire than a slam dunk. Also would he bolt after a couple of mediocre seasons for somewhere like LSU when Kelly inevitably gets fired.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Sat Oct 22, 2022 10:27 am Lane Kiffin as the next Husker head coach? I too would like to see Mickey get a fair crack at it but I worry there's not enough talent in the trenches to get more than 5 wins. I believe Mickey will have to win 6 or more games to be seriously considered.
I don't think money will end up being the issue with an outside guy but if Mickey can make a strong case I imagine he'd take much less.Louie wrote: Sat Oct 22, 2022 10:30 am He’s currently making $7.25m, so getting him to come here would be insanely expensive.

I completely agree with you. NU is currently 3-4. Looking at the Huskers remaining schedule- Illinois (home), Minnesota (home), Michigan (road), Wisconsin (home) and Iowa (road)- I think we can pencil in an NU loss at Michigan.. But the other 4? The Huskers could lose all of them or win all of them. To be bowl eligible, they need to come up with a way to win 3 of them..nebport5 wrote: Sat Oct 22, 2022 11:15 amOmaha Cowboy wrote: Sat Oct 22, 2022 10:27 am Lane Kiffin as the next Husker head coach? Kelly isn’t going anywhere! heck, Kiffin might get the Auburn job just to stick it to Saban at least once a year or he could also be going to the NFL again. However, when Frost was fired, Kiffins name was one that came to mind and I thought it was interesting that he was never a name that I saw mentioned in the early projections.

Kiffin was supposedly interested in the LSU job. As for Kelly, he under performed at N.D. and the expectations at LSU are just as high. Furthermore the SEC is much more competitive than N.D.'s usual schedule. If he last longer than 3 seasons I'll be shocked.

I'm actually more concerned with the O-line than the defense. Busch has shown improvement over the last three games(albeit not in yards given up) including two second half shutouts. It really hurt to lose Henrich. Getting Reimer back would be huge. Busch certainly has an up-hill battle after 4 years of not practicing tackling.

Re: Nebraska Football 2022
Let’s just say after the Purdue game, I have little confidence left in the Husker defense. Giving up 600 yards in total offense to the Boilers will do that to you, (at least it did to me, lol), The O-Line is another obvious concern..but if the Huskers can’t stop anybody defensively, that adds to the stress on the O-Line which, imo, run blocks better than they pass protect. If the Huskers are forced to abandon the run and play catch up throwing the ball, Casey Thompson is going to end up with a serious injury before the season ends..nebport5 wrote: Sat Oct 22, 2022 2:16 pmOmaha Cowboy wrote: Sat Oct 22, 2022 11:30 amI completely agree with you. Overall, the Huskers just don’t play complimentary football very well..and they haven’t for so long, it’s hard to remember the last time they did..
If NU somehow beats a good Illinois team next Saturday, I’ll feel much better about the possibility of 6 wins this season for sure…

Re: Nebraska Football 2022
True ND was mediocre for many years. I was generally referring to the number of games lost that they were more than favored and/or the games they should have won giving up sizable leads. Also ND got blown out in those "championship opportunities". They were pretenders. Yes, Kelly will have a better recruiting cupboard but also higher expectations. We shall see.CBJason wrote: Sat Oct 22, 2022 3:02 pmHe underperformed at ND?! He brought them back to national prominence with a couple championship opportunities. Re: Nebraska Football 2022
I think the O-line is the bigger concern. it starts with the run game. Chewing up clock, keeping the defense off the field, and protecting the ball. Its when the Huskers get into must-pass and catch-up situations that they get into trouble. I'd much prefer the Huskers hold the ball and score, and give up easy touch downs than the other way around, which is what we actually have right now.

Omaha Cowboy wrote: Sat Oct 22, 2022 4:09 pmLet’s just say after the Purdue game, I have little confidence left in the Husker defense.

I too would like to see Mickey get a fair crack at it but I worry there's not enough talent in the trenches to get more than 5 wins. I believe Mickey will have to win 6 or more games to be seriously considered.
Like you, I fear the lack of talent- especially on the defensive side of the ball, won’t be enough to get to 6 wins..
We’ll keep our fingers crossed…

I'm actually more concerned with the O-line than the defense. Busch has shown improvement over the last three games(albeit not in yards given up) including two second half shutouts. It really hurt to lose Henrich. Getting Reimer back would be huge. Busch certainly has an up-hill battle after 4 years of not practicing tackling.
Overall, the Huskers just don’t play complimentary football very well..and they haven’t for so long, it’s hard to remember the last time they did..
If NU somehow beats a good Illinois team next Saturday, I’ll feel much better about the possibility of 6 wins this season for sure…

Yes, Thompson is facing a blitzkrieg of defensive pressure. You could blame a few of his turnovers on poor protection vs bad throws. One less turnover could be the difference in these close games. Also remember after one of Thompson's INTs in the Purdue game the defense held Purdue to a field goal to keep NU in the game. The defense is at least creating turnovers to help even out the offensive turnovers. It would be nice to see Busch at least tighten up the run defense and get them tackling consistently. The quick scores to Palmer are great but don't help the D. Going back to the offensive deficiencies, the inability to run the ball(O-line again) would help an exhausted defense get off the field.
