Also from the W-H-

“LINCOLN – Nebraska football has its new head coach.

Matt Rhule, the 47-year-old who turned around two college football programs before a 2½-year stint in the NFL, was announced Saturday morning as NU’s new coach.

“It is a privilege to welcome Coach Matt Rhule, his wife Julie, and their family to Nebraska,” Nebraska Athletic Director Alberts said in a statement. “Coach Rhule has created a winning culture throughout his coaching career, and he will provide great leadership for the young men in our football program. Matt is detail-oriented, his teams are disciplined and play a physical brand of football. Matt also has the personality and relationship-building skills to build a great staff and excel in recruiting.”

NU will introduce Rhule on Monday at a 1:30 p.m. press conference inside Hawks Championship Center.“..

This guy has a good track record, my hunch is he will come in and quickly try and turn the things around. If he can win even 6 or 7 games bye next year or the year after he will be considered a success. He then will most likely leave for another Job. He doesn't seem to stay anywhere real long. I think we have him for at least 4 years. He could fall in love with the place and decide to stay longer.

:barf: So, the powers that be at the University of Nebraska have signed a guy to an 8 year contract. A guy who was 11-27 at his most recent gig before getting fired 5 games into the 2022 season.
Who was the last NU football coach to last 8 years?
Anybody?…
Anybody?…
Was his name Tom Osborne? 25 years ago.

Let’s not leave out the fact that Rhule’s latest gig was his first time ever, 3 year foray into the NFL as a head coach..

Before that, he had a proven track record as a college football head coach, of turning programs around..and quickly- both at Temple and at Baylor..

Sometimes success in college as a head coach doesn’t translate well into the NFL. Nick Saban anyone?..

This is a solid hire for Nebraska…

His cumulative record as head football coach at 3 venues is 58-70.
Fans should feel right at home with him coaching in Lincoln.

Meh, I'm not excited. They better do whatever they can to keep Mickey, because my ideal scenario now is having him take over after Rhule leaves in 3-4 years.

If his coaching history has any say, then expect the Huskers to still be bad next season, then get to a bowl, then contend for the West, then maybe win the West, then out the door. This is another Bill Callahan IMO. No husker pride. We'll see how it goes. I wont do much complaining about his lack of Husker connection if they start winning.

You must not know football! College and NFL are completely different, don't combine the two.

That's not a fair comparison. Callahan was an arrogant NFL guy with no respect for tradition. Did you watch Rhule's Gameday appearance? He's already shown respect for Osbourne, Mickey and even Frost. His pedigree is more college than NFL. Many good colleges coaches didn't fair well in the NFL. Whether he leaves in a few years I agree Mickey needs to stay. And Busch has done one heck of a job too.

Get over the connection aspect! While nice, success can happen both ways.

Your post shows an incredible lack of understanding in that a college coach’s NFL record means nothing in college football, and the teams he inherited at Temple and Baylor. I am not saying he is or isn’t going to be successful at Nebraska, but posting his cumulative record is silly as a knock on him.

I hear you on the 8yr contact but that's the reality to be competitive in college football these days.

As for his latest gig, most college coaches don't do well in the NFL.

Saban
Harbaugh
Urban Meyer
Steve Spurrier

Agreed. It’s not even an apples to apples comparison. Matt Rhule has had a proven track record of success as a College football Head Coach who specializes in turning programs around, and relatively quickly. Will this happen in Lincoln? Who knows. But based on his track record, I like his chances. Bill Callahan? He never really had any consistent success as a head coach anywhere before he arrived in Lincoln. He did coach the Raiders to the Super Bowl in 2002 (and lost to Tampa Bay), but that team was a splintered, fragmented mess which slowly fell apart the following year. In college, the guy could recruit, but he was not an effective head coach. What he is, is an excellent position coach..which he’s been in the NFL for the past 10 plus years.

I’d like to see Mickey Joseph stick around as well. I believe it would be in his best interest to stay..But in the end, he must make a decision that’s best for him and his family. If I had to guess on this, I’d say he will stay..But we should know if that’ll happen within the next several days…

I think Mickey would be a great asset to the NU football program if he did stay, especially from a recruiting standpoint.. But we’ll find out within the next couple days if he stays in Lincoln…

Tm Osborne”s cordial call with Matt Rhule includes chat about Mickey Joseph

LINCOLN — Matt Rhule said he crossed an item off his bucket list Saturday morning. “I talked to Coach Osborne,” Nebraska’s new football coach said on ESPN of a conversation with the legendary Husker coach and athletic director. Osborne said Saturday that the call was “cordial” and relatively brief. Osborne said he expected the call from Rhule after NU Athletic Director Trev Alberts phoned Saturday to tell Osborne Rhule wanted to chat. “I told Matt I’d help in any way I could,” Osborne said, “but I’m not going to be an interfering influence.” Osborne had been instrumental in encouraging Rhule’s predecessor, Scott Frost, to become NU’s head coach in 2017. Osborne also supported Frost’s interim replacement, Mickey Joseph, another former Husker quarterback.

“I talked to (Rhule) a little bit about Mickey and the job Mickey’s done in the interim,” Osborne said. Joseph would be a good addition to any staff, Osborne said when asked if Rhule should try to retain Joseph. “I would think that would be important, obviously,” Osborne said. “I can’t go any further that. “He’s a good recruiter, he relates well to people and he’s a straight shooter. He doesn’t give you any baloney. He tells you pretty much how it is. I like those qualities in him. It would serve anybody well to have him.” Osborne praised Alberts for a “thoughtful” search process. Osborne didn’t talk to Alberts much about the coaching search over the last several months, but he received occasional updates, including a sense of who the final six or seven candidates turned out to be. “I just listened because I’ve never met most of these people,” Osborne said. “I’m old enough now that I’m not in touch with the current generation of coaches.” Due to some “appointments” that are “pretty important,” Osborne said it’s unlikely he’ll attend Monday’s 1:30 p.m. press conference at the Hawks Championship Center to introduce Rhule. If Osborne’s not there, he said, it’s no reflection on what he thinks of the hire.

His college coaching record is pretty close to .500, so its not an invalid point. But it doesnt tell the whole story. He had seasons with double digit losses and double digit wins. If he can get Nebraska back to 10 wins in three years, he will have proven himself. Just cause he's done it twice, doesnt mean he'll do it a third time. Now if he had done it three plus times already, id be impressed with the hire. Its far from a guarantee it'll happen here. And given his history and what hes taking over, I still have low expectations for next year.

It is invalid imo. And here’s why I say that- When Rhule took over a broken Temple football program in 2013 they were 2-10, in 2014 they improved to 6-6 and in 2015 10-4, 2016 10-3..

At Baylor, coming off the heels of a 2016 sexual assault scandal, they were 1-11 in 2017, improved to 7-6 in 2018 and 11-3 in 2019 (completing for the Big 12 Championship)..

So you see, after rough 1st seasons, there were dramatic improvements at both schools starting in his 2nd season. There is NO REASON this can’t happen for NU either.. So his overall record is deceiving- look at his record starting with his 2nd season at both schools- Matt Rhule is a combined 44-22; and that’s the record I believe is most important here…

I think Rhule is a fine enough choice to do a rebuild on the program and Mickey Jospeh did a decent job of recalibrating the mindset of the team. No way does a Scott Frost-coached team fend off Iowa's late surge yesterday the way the Huskers did under Mickey. I hope Rhule decides to keep Mickey around. The team is clearly in a much better spot for Matt to step into than had Scott been steering the ship.

Good luck to the new regime. I also think we finally have a good head sitting in the AD's office. Looking forward to next season.

I'll be happy if next year they do better than 4-8, but going off his track record, I won't expect a much improved team off the bat. Edit, correction : Temple was 4-7 in the year before Rhule took over, and Baylor was 7-6  Time will tell.

Now that I'm home and have some time, I want to clarify my point : My expectations for next season are tempered, because after doing a little research, I came to find that Temple and Baylor were both better in the season before Matt Rhule took over (4-7 and 7-6 respectively), compared to the first season Matt Rhule took the lead (2-10 and 1-11 respectively). What that means for Nebraska, nobody knows. But adding in now, I definitely wouldnt agree that Nebraska is in better shape after the 2022 season than Baylor was after the 2016 season, and Temple was after the 2012 season (performance-wise) given the records I referenced above.

I'm just saying it very well might not be all up from here. Dont be disappointed with a 5-7, 4-8, 3-9, or 2-10 season next year. Given his track record, year two will be his prove it year. I hope it works out.

I forgot to reply to this directly. So if it turns out Rhule goes 3-9, 6-6, then 9-3 in his first three years, then that is .500. Would that be better than going 6-6, 6-6, and 6-6? And again, I'm just extrapolating based on his "proven track record", so at this point we're assuming the first year will still suck, second year will be bowl game, and third year will be above average. Its not an invalid point, at this point. I mean, even Mike Riley managed to go 9-3 at Nebraska, and was a .500 coach here.

I just hope they can retain Mickey Joseph in some role, and that when Rhule (inevitably, IMO) moves on, that Mickey will be ready.

As far as Rhule’s season records go, I looked them up and placed them in my initial post..

At both Temple and Baylor, his first season was a struggle, then his 2nd season, his teams were bowl eligible..after that, each had double digit winning seasons. Baylor was coming off a sexual assault scandal the season before Rhule became head coach there..Temple is, well, Temple..

Rhule May struggle his first season at Nebraska. Then again maybe it won’t be as bad. The first thing he needs to do, is teach this team how to finish and win..AND brush up on the use of the transfer portal, which if Mickey is retained, would provide a significant boost..

My 1st year expectation for Matt Rhule at Nebraska? I believe 6-6 and Bowl eligibility is a realistic expectation..

We’ll see…

I hear you on the 8yr contact but that's the reality to be competitive in college football these days.
No that’s how NU does it to seem relevant with the ‘Big Boys’ - Frost 7 yrs and $35 million. He got a 2 yr extension after his second yr even though he had a losing record.

So I went and looked up Heupel of Tennessee- his first contract 2021 - 6 yr $24 million and has been given an extension and pay raise based on success.

U of Washington coach Deboer first contract 2022 - 5 yr $16.5 million and has been given an multi year extension and $1 million raise

For $9M/yr if they aren't legit chasing a CFP spot by the time it goes to 12 teams he needs to be contractually required to jump off a tall |expletive| building. Same with whoever had to sign off on that contract.
Stable genius.

Consdiering they were 13 TOTAL points away from beating Northwestern, Purdue, and Wisconsin this year - which would have them at 7-5, bowl elgiible, and in the Big Ten Championship game - 6-6 for a $9M/yr savior is the absolute minimum anyone should be talking about.

He gets one year to clean house. Year two its nine wins minimum annually or |expletive| completely off.
Stable genius.

Wow, that's A LOT, and now that we know the figure, I really, really don't think his resume justifies that kind of money. Okay?, he turned around two schools, impressive, sure. But not THAT impressive. Its not like he's proven any sort of consistency in winning. He hasn't solidly brought a team up from the dead and proven that he can keep it there. Now, if he would have stayed at Baylor a few more years and had them sustained at the level they were when he left, then yeah, that's fair. I'm very much a skeptic of this hire.
