Sources: Wisconsin finalizing deal to hire Luke Fickell

Wisconsin is finalizing a deal to make Luke Fickell the school's next football coach, sources told ESPN. While there a few steps remaining -- including a regents meeting Sunday afternoon that's been formally announced -- a deal is expected to be formalized to make Fickell the next Badgers coach within the next 24 hours.

Consdiering they were 13 TOTAL points away from beating Northwestern, Purdue, and Wisconsin this year - which would have them at 7-5, bowl elgiible, and in the Big Ten Championship game - 6-6 for a $9M/yr savior is the absolute minimum anyone should be talking about.

He gets one year to clean house. Year two its nine wins minimum annually or |expletive| completely off.
That’s spot on with my line of thinking as well :thumb:

Hopefully this guy can have some amount of success. If he can even string together a few winning seasons that will be great after the Scott Frost train wreck and the strange Mike Riley tenure.

Marcus Satterfield set to leave Gamecocks to join Matt Rhule at Nebraska, report says

South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer is expected to have a major role to fill on his staff. Offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield is “close” to joining Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule’s staff in Lincoln, per a report from ESPN’s Pete Thamel. “Nebraska is close to hiring South Carolina OC Marcus Satterfield as the school’s new offensive coordinator,” Thamel wrote via Twitter on Monday morning. “South Carolina made a strong push to keep Satterfield, but his ties to Rhule and the opportunity to go to Nebraska won out.”

Matt Rhule talks about Mickey Joseph, others looking to stay on his staff

MIKE SCHAEFER, 247sports.com wrote:Unsurprisingly one of the first questions asked of new Nebraska coach Matt Rhule during his introductory press conference involved Mickey Joseph. Rhule said he’s reached out to Joseph and he admired the work Joseph did holding things together in a tough role as an interim coach. “I reached out to Mickey right when I got the job and I look forward to talking to him and the rest of the staff,” Rhule said. “You know I’ve been on both sides of it. I was an assistant coach on a staff that was let go and I appreciated the coach coming in and talking to me. I’ll try to be thorough with that process the next couple of days.”

Why is this surprising? The top 8 football coaches are at $9M per year and probably a couple more now after this cycle. This is what it takes to get the best!

Yeah it’s absolutely in line with what I thought. Nebraska is a money maker on its own and is in the conference with the best TV deal for years to come.

So true. Just look at what $ most pro players are getting. He’s nearly in that league. Mahome’s contract is $450mil/10 yr.
I didn’t realize how much $ is in sports now in general, until I looked into it more.

Of the seven coaches known to make the same or more than Rhule, 4 of them have combined for 14 CFP appearances and 10 national championships (either BCS era or CFP era). Those same 7 coaches will more than likely be adding three more CFP appearances - and very likely another NC - to that resume this weekend.

Rhule is being paid comparably to coaches like that. The expectations of him should be no different.

I think we're generally in agreement for once. I think we agree his contract is up there with the most elite coaches, as you stated, there's only seven coaches above him : Nick Saban, obvious, Kirby Smart, obvious, Dabo Swinney, obvious, Lincoln Riley, obvious, Brian Kelly, I suppose, Mel Tucker, head scratcher, Ryan Day, obvious, and now Matt Rhule, kind of a head scratcher IMO (and I'm being polite).

Where we may disagree is I don't think he's gonna turn it around immediately. Is he paid to? More than yes. Will he? I more than doubt it. He's being paid in the neighborhood of mostly championship winning (or close to it) coaches. That's why I don't really agree with the hire. He just doesn't have that level of resume. I'll believe it when I see it, and he really needs to prove it. And I'll eat my words if need be.

Take a look at what the new coach at Tennessee made his first year and now in his extension. Nebraska is far from being a Top 8 football program and hate to break the news to you hasn’t been for 20+ yrs.

Rhule makes immediate changes at NU, as Zach Duval and Dave Ellis no longer with program

Zach Duval’s tenure as Nebraska football head strength coach is over. Same goes for Dave Ellis, who was Nebraska’s director of performance nutrition.

Nebraska can afford this, without a sweat. I would bet Nebraska's overall athletic revenues are somewhere in the top 15 nationally. This would include tv money, attendance revenue (NU has 3 sports that generate income), licensing, their new radio/media deal, and donations.

I wasn't actually making any predictions on whether he would or wouldn't be successful on that schedule. I'm just saying for $9M/yr this "wait til he gets his guys in there" bull |expletive| is a non starter with me.

For the record, I think he'll fail miserably. The Athletic Department (and to a lesser degree, the university as a whole) has been irreparably broken.

And yes, I hope I'm wrong. But I never am, so.

Oh I know they can afford it - look at the millions they have paid out to coaches to NOT coach at NU.

I am kind of with Big E in that if they are paying him $9.25m and upped his asst budget to over $7m then there should be big improvement next year.

Side note - I go to watch the Huskers on TV but don’t bleed husker red. I went to a division to college so we didn’t have the fanaticism that I have observed with husker fans. They don’t seem to understand the national championships were over 30+ yrs and a different style of college football ago

More coaches joining the Huskers staff under Matt Rhule

A day after Matt Rhule’s introduction where he said he would not sleep much this week, he is hiring UConn Running Backs coach E.J. Barthel. This according to Rivals, Barthel was also with Rhule in Carolina. Tuesday night Terrance Knighton’s partner Tiffony Taylor sent out the tweet below with a message to Carolina fans and Nebraska fans. Terrance was a defensive line assistant with the Panthers, he also played seven years in the NFL.

Rhule in his introduction said his staff would have coaches with NFL experience and he’s looking for players who also want to play in the NFL. The early signing period opens December 21st, the portal opens next week plus Rhule still needs to hire a handful on field coaches, there’s a lot to do in a short amount of time.

Report: Former Husker Jake Peetz expected to join Matt Rhule's coaching staff as QB coach

We know there will potentially be at least one former Husker on Nebraska’s coaching staff. According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, former Husker walk-on Jake Peetz (2003-2005) will join Matt Rhule in Lincoln. However, HuskerOnline has learned the deal with Peetz is not done and could be contingent on whether Mickey Joseph is part of the full-time staff. Joseph and Rhule met Tuesday.

Bill Busch no longer with Nebraska football program

Bill Busch is no longer with Nebraska after spending the last two seasons with the football program. New coach Matt Rhule on Tuesday elected to part ways with Busch, sources have confirmed to the World-Herald. Busch was a defensive analyst in 2021 and began this season as special teams coordinator before serving as interim defensive coordinator spanning NU’s last eight games. Busch spent a full decade with the Huskers across three stints including 1990-93 as a graduate assistant and 2004-07 as an assistant under Bill Callahan primarily working with safeties and special teams.

Ick. Reminds me of Callahan. Maybe that stance will work in the Transfer Portal era.
