First downs and second guesses: Here we go. Union Omaha vs. Sporting KC. Or, as Gary Green calls it, little brother vs. big brother. That’s fitting, because these two were almost family. Union plays big brother Sporting on Wednesday night in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open Cup — which is like the old one-class Indiana high school basketball tournament. Does that make the Owls the Hoo-siers?

The third-division (USL League One) Union is looking for its third straight MLS pelt. Some have compared it to a Double-A baseball team beating major-league teams.

There was a time when Union was almost Sporting’s farm team. “It was more than a thought,” said Green, the Union Omaha owner. “Back then there was no League One. Sporting Kansas City had reached out to us to be their USL Championship team, which is now MLS Two.

Sure proud of the run Union made. Certainly raised some eyebrows and put Omaha on the soccer radar I think. Despite the loss to SKC, it's a win-win for Omaha and the Owls.

Union Omaha snaps scoreless streak with draw against Chattanooga

Chavany Willis scored in the third minute of stoppage time Saturday as Union Omaha salvaged a point with a 1 -1 draw against Chattanooga at Werner Park. The Red Wolves (6-8-4) were playing down a man after Pedro Hernandez's red card in the 66th minute, and Willis took advantage to snap a scoreless streak of more than 270 minutes for the Owls (5-2-9). Chattanooga led for most of the match after Hernandez scored in the 20th minute.

Next up for Omaha will be a match next Saturday at Central Valley.

Young star has appeared in MLS and USL Championship competition

Union Omaha announced today the signing of defender Shaft Brewer Jr. for the 2022 season, pending league and federation approval. Brewer Jr. is the second recent Owl signing who has played for United States national team at the youth level. Brewer Jr. started his youth career in 2015 with USL side Sacramento Republic’s academy team, where he was the team’s top goal scorer, before moving to the academy team at FC Dallas. The Sacramento native has 2 goals in 11 appearances for the United States U18 national team and 2 caps for the U20 team. He went on to join Los Angeles FC in 2018 and was loaned out to USL Championship member Phoenix Rising FC several times while with the Black & Gold. Brewer Jr. more recently played overseas in Norway for Fram Larvik, scoring 3 goals in 24 matches.

A highly touted goalkeeper appears to be headed to Nebraska's largest city.

PAPILLION, Neb. -- A highly touted goalkeeper appears to be headed to Nebraska's largest city. On Friday, Union Omaha announced the signing of goalkeeper Christian Eduardo Olivares for the 2022 season, pending league and federation approval. Olivares adds another pair of hands for the Owls in goal for the end of the season and is reunited with former Salt Lake Community College teammate Ryen Jiba. In his time with the Bruins, Olivares recorded 53 saves and 13 clean sheets in 18 games en route to the team’s first National Junior College Athletic Association Championship in 2021. The young goalkeeper has also spent time with both the Real Salt Lake Academy team and former USL Championship member Real Monarchs, winning the title in 2019.“Christian is a talented young goalkeeper who comes from some great environments with Salt Lake City CC and Real Salt Lake Academy,” Union Omaha Head Coach Jay Mims said. “He will add immediate depth in that position for us and will be able to learn and grow with our current experienced players in a competitive professional environment.” “I’m super excited to be part of this group and help in any way to win a championship,” Olivares said.

Union Omaha announced the signing of a former U.S. national youth team member.

Union Omaha announced the signing of a former U.S. national youth team member. The club said Tuesday that it had signed midfielder Joe Gallardo, pending league and federation approval. Gallardo returns to the United States after playing aboard the last two seasons in Mexico. Gallardo grew up playing soccer in the academy system for Liga MX side Monterrey until 2016 when he joined Orlando City’s U-17 squad. He had a breakout season in League One playing for the Richmond Kickers in 2019, when he led the club in goals scored and shots, earning a spot on the League One First Team.

Following that, the San Diego native was transferred to then-USL Championship side Real Monarchs SLC. After a season in Salt Lake City, he moved to Liga MX’s Querétaro. This past season, he was loaned out to Correcaminos UAT of Liga de Expansión MX. Gallardo has also appeared at the youth level for the United States National Team, spending time with the U-15, U-17 and U-19 squads and scoring 19 goals over the course of his international career.

“Joe’s a talented player that’s gained some great experience here and in Mexico over the last few years,” Union Omaha Head Coach Dominic Casciato said. “He’s versatile, has good technical quality and is eager to make his mark again in League One after being named an All-League selection back in 2019 with Richmond. He's young enough to still have room to grow and improve before he reaches his peak, so I'm excited to see what he brings to our team this season.”
