Re: 2022 Weather Thread
I rather enjoyed the ambiance of today. Didn't end up with much precipitation, but still the cold, cloudy, foggy, mixed precipitation was right up my alley. I love these days that, albeit are fairly uncomfortable to be out in, remind you just how cozy and relaxing it is to just go home after work, take a shower, change into some sweat pants and a sweatshirt, fix something comforting to eat, have a cup of warm tea and snuggle in for bed. Even though I do that pretty much every night, it just feels different when mother nature requires you to do it. I personally love it. Today was wonderful.

I had my driveway replaced back in September. We still haven't had a heavy enough rain to wash away the grit and sand that remains at the end of the driveway and further down the street.

Winter weather in Omaha allows me to practice my comfort food recipes…heavy pasta dishes, crockpot stews, lots of potatoes, soups and dishes cooked on the stovetop in simmer sauces. It’s frankly the one thing Omaha has over being in our winter home in México, where we are still able to grill out and heavy dishes just aren’t on the menu.

Re: 2022 Weather Thread
Odds are increasing that we will get at least some freezing rain Monday night in Omaha with potential for an ice storm in parts of IA and southern MN.
The track of this storm system seems to be trending south so that could make things a bit more interesting in parts of the area as well (though we “should” still end up on the warm side of the low so assuming that happens, mostly rain that eventually transitions to snow before precip ends).
But the track will need to be watched closely. If it shifts further south, we “could” end up more on the wintry side. Odds are low that will happen but it’s something to keep an eye on.
Either way, hopefully some at least decent precip totals for a change. I’d lean toward .5”-1” locally but maybe more (fingers crossed).

Re: 2022 Weather Thread
Thankfully the likelihood of ice in Omaha has decreased though it still looks like parts of northwest IA and southwest MN will get a fair amount.
We may actually get a few rumbles of thunder out of this storm system which is always fun in December. Rain looks to move through in 2 main rounds with the first occurring around Midnight tonight and then stopping for a while and the 2nd more widespread round moving in around rush hour tomorrow morning and lasting on and off until about noon tomorrow when dry air pushes in from the southwest and cuts off our precip.
I'm still thinking somewhere between .5" and 1" of much needed precip in Omaha itself with locally heavier amounts (especially if you get one of the potential thundershowers moving through your area).
Otherwise plenty of Snoops favorite precip type today - (Gotta love dad jokes - you're welcome

For what it's worth, we "almost" had de ja vu here in Omaha tomorrow.
If temps/dewpoints end up ~10 degrees higher than expected (which is extremely unlikely obviously), we'd be talking another potential mid-December severe weather/tornado outbreak for the area.
As it stands, we might get a few isolated storms tomorrow afternoon in parts of eastern NE but no widespread severe weather is expected. "Maybe" some small hail/graupel if anything actually develops with a very low end threat for a stronger storm (though the odds of that happening are about as low as they get).

As expected, a few weak storms are firing northwest of Omaha along a warm front pushing into the area (53 degrees currently in Lincoln and sunny behind the warm front).
Not extremely far off from being warm enough for severe weather. This time it’s just too cold and dewpoints are too low though for anything much to happen…

A devastating storm swept through Nebraska one year ago
December 15, 2021
Derecho - National Weather Service
A derecho (pronounced similar to "deh-REY-cho") is a widespread, long-lived wind storm that is associated with a band of rapidly moving showers or thunderstorms. Although a derecho can produce destruction similar to the strength of tornadoes, the damage typically is directed in one direction along a relatively straight swath.

Re: 2022 Weather Thread
I enjoyed today. I loved watching the snow fall, and TBH, people not wanting to go out makes my work life 10x easier. Even though Its pretty darn cold, especially with the wind, I still prefer to experience the seasons. Whereas last year on this date it was like 75 degrees and we had a tornado warning. There's a time and place for this weather, and we're in it now. Doesn't necessarily feel good, but it feels correct. If it weren't for the wind, this honestly wouldn't be half bad.

Re: 2022 Weather Thread
Looks like toward the middle of next week there is decent potential for our first "bigger" accumulating snow event. It's just a matter of to what extent.
The ECMWF is depicting another MONSTER storm/potential blizzard like what just happened to our north and west - this time its depicted for just barely to our east into much of IA.
Odds are obviously low as it's way too far out to really know what to expect but something to keep a close eye on. Either way, it's about to get very cold...

For reference, this is what the 12z ECMWF is showing for the potential blizzard to our east next Thursday (12/22). Don't expect things to verify exactly as shown - I'm just trying to show the potential of this storm. The track, strength, etc are impossible to know this far out and just because it's shown to our east now, doesn't mean we should ignore this storm as it could quickly shift west and impact us (or it could quickly go "poof" on future model runs too and be a non-event).

The later half of nextweek looks bitter cold. Which could cause some problems because some people could be traveling for the Holidays . This looks like one of the coldest Christmas days we've had in a long time. Something to keep an eye on.

Re: 2022 Weather Thread
Even though it is pretty uncomfortable, I like the prospect of Christmas actually feeling like Christmas for once. I'd have to go back and look, but I think its been a while since we've had both:
a)had a decent amount of snow by Christmas, and
b) it hadn't been fairly mild on or right around the holiday.
I hope this storm comes through with some snow. It would be quite the departure since looking back to 2008 or 2009 (last time I recall it snowing a decent amount by Christmas) as far as I recall.

Re: 2022 Weather Thread
Still on pace for several inches of snow later this week for Omaha which will come in 2 rounds.
The first on Monday with a small system that will probably bring with it a couple inches of snow over a relatively localized area. If this storm shifts it’s track at all, it could miss Omaha so confidence is low considering how close we are to the event. Right now the most likely area to see snow accumulations is southeast of Omaha with Omaha itself more on the edge of things. Either way not a major event.
The second/primary storm looks to move through mostly on Wednesday. Right now, I’m thinking somewhere in the 3” to 5” snowfall total range but it’s obviously still too early to know. It looks like a “plowable” amount though.
This storm wrapping up into a potential blizzard like I mentioned a few days ago is still shown on forecast models but is becoming increasingly likely that it won’t happen until things are well east of Omaha (close to Chicago).
After this storm passes, the bottom falls out on temps too. We probably won’t get above zero on Thursday with wind.

I feel guilty because I’m missing the abnormally warm winter weather we’ve had the last few years, but at the same time it’s reassuring we can still have the typical normal Nebraska winter weather most of us remember from the past.

Re: 2022 Weather Thread
A winter storm watch has been issued for the Omaha area for the storm on Wednesday. Despite the fact it doesn’t wrap up until east of here, it’s still strong enough that it may cause some blizzard conditions in our area considering how cold it will be and as a result, the snow will be the light/fluffy stuff that is easy for the wind to blow around. The blowing snow will be at its worst probably after the snow has actually stopped falling with potential for difficult/impossible travel Wednesday evening/Thursday.

Re: 2022 Weather Thread
I think its pretty safe for me to bump up my expected snow totals for Wednesday into the 6"-10" range for Omaha with potential for totals approaching or exceeding a foot of snow in some areas with wind. Unfortunately it's looking increasingly likely we will get a full fledged blizzard for our area (with conditions even worse to our east as the storm wraps up).
Most of the snow probably won't start until Wednesday afternoon with temps around 20 degrees. As we get into the evening hours, a boundary will push through and temps will plummet into the single digits and then below zero with moderate snowfall occurring at this time and into Thursday morning. As the temps drop into the single digits and below zero, this is the time that snow will accumulate quickly since it will be the light/fluffy variety due to the cold temps. This is also the time the wind will really start to pick up and visibility will be zero/near zero in open areas causing whiteouts and near impossible travel - especially given the type of snow we will likely get with this (light/fluffy stuff).
The wind will likely last through much of Thursday causing blowing snow issues well after the snow actually stops falling.

Thanks a lot Mother Nature/Old Man Winter - heading to Sioux Falls from Tampa for Christmas on the 22nd. Predicted temp when I land — somewhere where around -10 with windchills at -50. While I am gone, the 23rd-25th, overnight temps down here will be below freezing.

Wow, this is nuts! Bill Randby forecasting -4 or -5 for HIGHS on Thursday and Friday. NWS agrees it will not break zero degrees. Not only that, but wind chills around -40! Un-freakin-believable! Not in a good way, believe me, I love cold weather, but this is going to be absolutely brutal. I don't remember the last time it was this cold this early.

The NWS really should keep track of record-low-highs and record-high-lows. Record lows for 12/22 and 12/23 are -25, and -20, respectively. But we have no way to know what the high temps were on those days, unless anybody remembers
... If the records existed, I'd have to guess we would at least be somewhat in the territory of record-low-highs on Thursday and Friday.

Re: 2022 Weather Thread
Just to clarify my expected snow totals with this storm...
Odds are highest that Omaha will end up with around 4"-6" of snow total. However, we are on the western edge of where the heavier snow is expected and these amounts are contingent on how quickly precip develops to our west and pushes through our area (it will be developing as it's moving through our area so timing will be important).
If the storm develops accumulating snow slower (i.e. there is dry air to contend with) or if it pushes through at a faster speed than expected, those totals could end up being less than 6" (probably closer to 3" or 4" of snow). Areas east of Omaha will probably end up in the 8"-10" range (again, depending on timing).
That said, the exact snow totals are a moot point with this storm and even 2"-3" of snow with that wind will cause siginificant issues.
