Hockey Unveils 2022-23 Slate

Omaha head hockey coach Mike Gabinet announced the 2022-23 non-conference slate Monday morning. The NCHC schedule was released back in April. The Mavericks will play 35 games, including one exhibition, 10 non-conference and 24 league games. The 2022-23 campaign features five 2021-22 NCAA Tournament participants, including the defending national champions. Fans can catch the Mavericks at Baxter Arena 19 times this year.

Omaha opens regular season action with a home series vs. Niagara on October 7-8. The Mavericks then take the next series on the road to Lake Superior State (Oct. 15-16). They return home for another pair of games vs. Alaska Fairbanks on Oct. 21 and 23 before closing the month's action at LIU on the 28-29. NCHC action opens at Baxter arena on Nov. 4-5 with league rival North Dakota. The Fighting Hawks finished last season 24-14-1 overall and capped their run in the NCAA first round. The Mavericks continue action with their next three series at NCAA Tournament opponents. They will face-off at Minnesota Duluth (Nov. 11-12), take on 2022 champs Denver (Nov. 25-26), and close the stretch with Western Michigan at home (Dec. 2-3).

Noel-Bernier Elevated to Associate Head Coach

Head hockey coach Mike Gabinet elevated Dave Noel-Bernier to associate head coach at the end of June. He has served as an assistant coach since April of 2017. "I want to thank coach Gabinet and the administration for this opportunity," said Noel-Bernier. "I am grateful to be elevated to this position. Our staff has been working relentlessly, and I am proud of the foundation that has been laid. I am excited to keep building!"

Over the last five seasons, Noel-Bernier helped the Mavericks to 75 wins, three NCHC tournament appearances, and one NCAA tournament appearance. The Mavericks saw their second straight NCHC appearance last season after finishing at the 21-17-0 mark. That followed a season where Omaha made the NCAA tournament as an at-large bid with a 14-11-1 record. Over the last two seasons, the Mavericks have notched 13 wins against ranked opponents. "Coach Noel-Bernier has had such a positive impact on our program," said Gabinet. "His work ethic, loyalty and pride in our program are on full display day in and day out. He has earned this accolade, and I am extremely happy for him."

Sullivan Tabbed As Omaha Captain For 2022-23 Season,
Randl and Miller Named Alternates

Leadership for the 2022-23 season is set as the Mavericks have announced senior forwards, Nolan Sullivan and Jack Randl along with junior winger Matt Miller will don this year's captaincy letters. Sullivan will be equipped with the "C" while Randl and Miller will each wear the alternate "A" this season.

"Nolan Sullivan brings an elite work ethic and the highest degree of character to our program," Omaha head coach Mike Gabinet said. "He drives our culture each day and sets the standard of what Omaha Hockey is all about. We are thrilled to have him continue to lead our group this year as captain." A native of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, Sullivan was an alternate captain both his sophomore and junior seasons before earning the captain's patch this year. In 96 career games with the Mavericks, the senior forward has totaled 14 goals and 16 assists with 142 shots on net.

Omaha will kick off their 2022-23 campaign on Saturday, October 1st against Minnesota State in an exhibition matchup before getting the regular season underway against Niagara at Baxter Arena, the following weekend, October 8-9.

Weiss Returning to Mavericks for Fifth Year

The 2022-23 Omaha Mavericks are getting a familiar and veteran face back for the upcoming campaign as forward Tyler Weiss rejoins the Mavericks for his fifth year. Weiss was the Mavericks second leading scorer last season with 33 points. He tallied eight goals and 25 helpers in 36 games for Omaha. His 25 assists were tied for the team lead with former Maverick blueliner, Brandon Scanlin. Weiss tied a career best with a six-game point streak that was opened up with a three-assist night against Alaska Fairbanks. It would be the second time in his career he's notched three assists in one game.

Mavericks Set to Open 2022-23 Campaign with Exhibition against No. 3 Minnesota State

This Week
The Mavericks kickoff the 2022-23 campaign tomorrow night against 2022 NCAA Runner-Up, No. 3 Minnesota State. Puck drop slated for 6:07 PM from Baxter Arena.

The Teams
Omaha enters their 26th season of Division I hockey tomorrow night. They're coming off a 21-17-0 season. They finished 11-13-0 in NCHC play to finish 6th in the conference. In the annual NCHC Media Preseason Poll, Omaha was picked to finish 7th. No. 3 Minnesota State undoubtedly enters Saturday's exhibition with a chip on their shoulder. The 2022 NCAA runner-up was 20 minutes away from a national title before NCHC rival Denver rattled off five 3rd period goals. The Mavericks went 38-6-0 last season and claimed the CCHA tournament title.

New Kids On The Block
The Mavericks welcome 12 newcomers to the roster this year. The list of newcomers is made up of 10 freshmen, senior goaltender transfer Jake Kucharski (AIC) and graduate student Jake Pivonka (Notre Dame). Position breakdown of the freshmen goes as follows ... Forwards: Ray Fust (Waterloo - USHL), Jacob Slipec (Surrey - BCHL), Cam Mitchell (Omaha - USHL), Michael Abgrall (Surrey - BCHL), Tyler Rollwagen (Fargo - USHL) ... Defensemen: Joaquim Lemay (Lincoln - USHL), Griffin Ludtke (Sioux City - USHL), Jacob Guevin (Muskegon - USHL) ... Goaltenders: Simon Latkoczy (Madison - USHL) and Raythan Robbins (Anchorage - NAHL).

Mavericks Open Floodgates and Down No.3 Minnesota State in Exhibition Opener

The Mavericks got out front early on No. 3 Minnesota State early and never looked back. Getting goals from Sophomore forward Ty Mueller (who ended up being 1st star of the game with three points) and graduate transfer Jake Pivonka in the opening 9:04 of the game, Omaha was able to keep their foot on the gas and open the season up with a 7-2 exhibition victory. Omaha got goals from seven different players tonight. However, it would be freshman newcomer Ray Fust who ended up being the game winning goal scorer with a quick snap shot from the right faceoff dot just 2:51 into the 2nd period to put the Mavericks up 3-0.

The Mavericks will officially get their 2022-23 campaign underway with regular season action next weekend when they host Niagara for a weekend series at Baxter Arena.

Mavericks Led On Shots but Purple Eagles Snatched Opening Night Win

OMAHA, Neb. - Omaha hockey opened the 2022-23 regular season Friday night at home with visiting Niagara. The Purple Eagles tallied a pair of goals in the first and second periods to snatch a 4-3 win in the opener. Omaha falls to 0-1 on the year and will have a chance to even the series against Niagara Saturday night at 7 p.m. "We got to carry a lot of the play there in certain times of the game, and we did a lot of good things," said head coach Mike Gabinet. "But again, we have some of those glaring mistakes that you're trying to play catch up there and Niagara did a good job keeping us from tying the game."

Strong PK Effort Helps Lead Mavericks to 2-1 Victory over Sharks in Series Opener

The Omaha Mavericks get back to a .500 winning percentage with a gritty and resilient 2-1 victory over the Long Island University Sharks. Omaha jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when junior forward Jimmy Glynn tapped in a loose puck in the crease just 4:10 into the contest. Glynn's first goal of the 2022-23 campaign was assisted by New York Islanders draft picks Jake Pivonka and Cameron Berg. With 16 seconds remaining in the 2nd period, LIU equalized the game with their lone goal of the evening on the power play.

Mavericks Use Six Different Goal Scorers in 7-1 Victory to Secure Series Sweep Over LIU

The Omaha Mavericks jumped on the Long Island University Sharks early tonight and never looked back. The nation's leading goal scorer continued to do what he's done best this season by putting the puck in the net twice tonight. Jack Randl got things rolling tonight for Omaha when he scored on the power play just 2:32 into the game. Randl would go on to make it 2-0 when he tapped in a Tyler Weiss centering pass from the doorstep of the LIU cage. Omaha buried two more times in the 2nd period getting goals from Cameron Berg and Joaquim Lemay. Berg buried his second goal of the season when he rifled a snapshot up stairs to beat Vinnie Purpura. 55 seconds later, Freshman blueliner Jo Lemay scored his first collegiate goal with a shot from just inside the blueline utilizing the screen set in front of the Sharks net.

I will be honest. Never saw UNO earning a split against North Dakota. UNO did not play a good non conference schedule and did not look good during a big chunk of it.

Hopefully we see more of what they showed against ND.
