OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — Chances are you've driven by Winchester Bar & Grill and didn't even realize it. It may be one of the most hidden and best-kept secrets in the metro. But as 3 News Now Anchor Serese Cole reports, thanks to social media, the word is quickly getting out about the bar and its classic comfort food. If there was ever an example of why you shouldn't judge a book by its cover — this could be it. Winchester Bar & Grill has been tucked away on 70th and Q since the 70s. "It's a little hidden. You have to go out of your way to find it. But once you're here — honestly, it's the treasure you wanted to find," said Shift Manager Sarah Lacount.

Cheap Eats: Single Double

The owners of Kamp Blackstone were in search of the best cheeseburger in the city, but they say they couldn't find it. So, they created it. Yeah it’s hyperbolic puffery, but I guess I expect it from someone who is proud of their food.
There are plenty of restaurants in Omaha that create outstanding burgers. Maybe this place is one of them. I doubt I will ever take the time to find out.

Cheap Eats: Golden Bowl

Golden Bowl has been voted Bellevue's best Chinese restaurant every year since it opened. Cheap Eats: Old Market Candy Shop

Valentine's Day is less than two weeks away. If you're still unsure what to do for someone special, 3 News Now Anchor Serese Cole made a trip to the Old Market to give you some delicious ideas. It may be the sweetest spot in the Old Market. "It's an old-fashioned candy shop that people enjoy coming in, reminiscing about things they haven't seen for many years," explained owner Jeff Jorgensen. The Old Market Candy Shop has been selling delicious candy since 1977.

The owners say the nice thing about making your own chocolate is it's easy to accommodate special requests. If you have a special order — call them ahead of time at (402) 344-8846. To make sure your Valentine has their treats in time, place your order about a week out. You can always stop by and watch them make their chocolate. The Old Market Candy Shop is at 1007 Howard Street. All their chocolate is priced by weight.

Cheap Eats: Angelwingz

Chicken wings are one of the most popular Super Bowl foods. The National Chicken Council expects us to eat 1.4 billion wings this Sunday. If you love a good chicken wing, 3 News Now Anchor Serese Cole has a brand new place to tell you about in this week's Cheap Eats.

It opened in January and the word is already out about its unique take on wings.

There are chicken wings. And there are Angelwingz.

"We are wing connoisseurs, and we are wing lovers. We wanted to bring wings to Kamp and bring our own little spin on them," said Extra Credit Group Creative Director Jake Dawson. Angelwingz is the newest addition to the Kamp Blackstone food hall on 36th and Farnam.

Cheap Eats: Southern Spoon

There's no part of town more in need of a sit-down restaurant than North Omaha. The owners of the new restaurant Southern Spoon saw that void and filled it with a family-friendly dining space. As 3 News Now Anchor Serese Cole reports in this week's Cheap Eats, they're offering people in the community everything from traditional Southern food to Hispanic, Italian — even Caribbean cuisine. There's something new cooking on the corner of 39th and Ames Streets. "It's a bright spot in the community that we try to create," said Jay Overton.

CHEAP EATS: Corner Kitchen

This week's Cheap Eats takes us to a Metro restaurant that is quickly becoming the talk of the town. That's because they're serving something truly unique. As 3 News Now Anchor Serese Cole found out that for nearly a year, Corner Kitchen has been making mouthwatering Mexican food with a twist.

It's a new restaurant with a new concept.

"I describe it as a fusion between Mexican and Asian food," said owner Maira Hernandez. "My husband loves Asian food. My brother-in-law loves Asian food, Asian culture, Korean culture all that culture. We decided, you know what, let's mish-mash this together," she added.

The mish-mash makes for an eclectic menu.

Cheap Eats: Brazen Head Irish Pub

It is Saint Patrick's Day, so it's only fitting we celebrate by showing you some delicious Irish dishes. In this week's Cheap Eats, 3 News Now Anchor Serese Cole takes us to the Brazen Head Irish Pub where it's all things Irish all the time. If you're searching for a true Irish experience, look no further than Brazen Head Irish Pub. "It's really sort of modeled after the Brazen Head in Dublin," explained co-owner Teri Ochoa.

The original Brazen Head is the oldest Irish pub in Ireland built back in the 1700s. The Omaha version was made in Ireland, too. "The bar and all the woodwork (was) done overseas, shipped it over here and built it here to try and replicate the spirit of that," Ochoa added. "So, you get this coziness and warmth with all the woodwork and everything and it's got a rich and decadent feeling to it, but at the same time it's super casual and relaxed."

"It's a pub. You know Omaha is a big Irish town," said co-owner Larry Good. "I think they know everybody almost on a first-name basis by now. It's an Irish cheers," he chuckled. The decor and atmosphere are Irish-inspired, but the food is the heart of this place. PChef Luis Martinez has been cooking up Irish cuisine at the pub for the last 20 years. From the Dubb Linn Stew to the sausage bangers with chive potatoes and gravy, he knows his way around this kitchen. One of his specialties is the Brazen Head boxtys. It's a traditional Irish potato pancake that's filled more like an omelet. There are six different boxtys to choose from. Martinez says the boxty sauce is boss. "When customers take a bite out of that, what do they usually think?" asked Serese.

CHEAP EATS: Aviles Latin Market

Thursday was National Tamale Day and 3 News Now Anchor Serese Cole has the perfect place to celebrate. Six months ago, a Metro chef opened a Latin supermarket. Not only can you find unique products and ingredients — you can also grab your next meal. And customers can't seem to get enough of what he's cooking. There's a new shop in town. "I kind of had this idea for a long time," said Jose Aviles. His idea? A Latin market. "We have Puerto Rican, Dominican, Columbian, Cuban, Mexican, Salvadorian, Ecuador, South America," he listed. The Aviles Latin Market sells everything from spices and seasonings to chips and salsa.

"Everyone is welcome, but also I wanted to involve all Latin countries to be able to have a little of everything because I know that's the hardest thing to — find especially this part of town," Aviles explained. The challenge for customers may be finding the place. It's hidden in the back of the Roxbury Plaza near 108th and Q Street. The market has a full deli. They sell carnitas, birria, Mexican rice and charro beans, homemade queso and more. But from the beginning, customers had two repeated requests. "People kept asking for tamales — then they started asking for enchiladas," Jose smiled. So, they started making those there, too. The enchiladas were in such demand, they couldn't keep up.

CHEAP EATS: Black Label

FREMONT, Neb. (KMTV) — It started off as two empty nesters searching to run their own dive bar. They never found that dive bar. But the husband-wife duo did create a cool casual dining experience for families — with some mega-desserts. Their handcrafted milkshakes are like masterpieces — and the word is out about them! 3 News Now Anchor Serese Cole made the trip to Fremont to check out Black Label's milkshakes for herself. You may not think of Fremont, Nebraska as a dining destination — but something deliciously different is being served here.

Black Label owner, Laurel Korman, got the idea for her super shakes years ago. "I just thought it's a crazy idea and I thought we need to do that," Laura said with a smile. She and her husband Jason came up with 11 creative concoctions for their handcrafted milkshakes like: Snickers, S'mores, Cotton Candy and the Chocolate Milk and Cookies Milkshake.

CHEAP EATS: Jackson's Fair Deal Cafe

The Fair Deal Cafe has been a staple in the North Omaha community for decades. Now the restaurant is back open — under new management. Antoine and Vershan Jackson started as dishwashers at the old Clark's Cafe when they were teenagers. The "Wonder Twins" quickly worked their way up the restaurant ladder - and eventually opened up their own place - "Jackson's Takeout" - on 62nd and Ames. Now, they're bringing their home cooking to the historic 24th Street area — hoping to turn a food desert into a dining destination.

Went here last night to get the birria pizza. It was amazing and huge. We were only able to eat 3 of the 8 pieces. They did raise the price but for the pizza and fries, it was only $29 I think. Easily enough to feed 5-6 adults.

The owner, Marco, is a very nice man and said that ever since the Omaha Food Lovers post and the segment on Cheap Eats, business has been really good, especially for the pizza.

CHEAP EATS: Ted & Wally's

Now that Spring is here — we are officially in ice cream season. In this week's Cheap Eats, 3 News Now Anchor Serese Cole is taking you to one of the most popular ice cream shops in the Metro. Ted & Wally's was created back in 1984 in Lincoln. It made its way to Omaha two years later.

Yes, I really like their food. I have not tried their birria pizza yet because if I’m in the mood for pizza I have my 4 or 5 favorite places in town, and if I’m in the mood for Mexican then I’m not in the mood for pizza. The birria tacos are legit.
I do wish that they would get their liquor license back! Their patio was always the perfect place to sip on margaritas while eating tacos!

CHEAP EATS: Wilby's Comfort 2.0

PAPILLION, Neb. (KMTV) — There's a new comfort food restaurant in town. Wilby's Comfort started as a food truck. Now, two cousins from Omaha — Edward King and Kenneth Waytes — are expanding the concept to Papillion. CHEAP EATS: Muchachos

It's a big addition to Omaha's Little Bohemia neighborhood. Muchachos opened as a food truck in Lincoln seven years ago — then came the brick-and-mortar. The owner brought his unique flavor to the Metro in May. In this week's Cheap Eats, 3 News Now Anchor Serese Cole introduces us to the restaurant — and its New Mexican, Barbecue fusion. Muchachos is bright on the outside, fun and artsy on the inside.

An Omaha native makes it big in the Big Apple. He has not two, not four - but five successful pizzerias in New York. Now he's bringing his popular pizza pies back to his hometown. Williamsburg Pizza opened May 30th — and so far, so good. 3 News Now Anchor Serese Cole checks it out in this week's Cheap Eats. CHEAP EATS: The Corn Dog Company

OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — Typically, when you think of corndogs you think of carnivals or state fairs. But a Metro food truck is making the deep-fried food available year-round — and it's the only one of its kind in the entire state. 3 News Now Anchor Serese Cole made a stop at The Corndog Company food truck in this week's Cheap Eats.

Summer just isn't summer without having something deep-fried and on a stick. Just ask Juan Lopez. "I did not know people loved corn dogs that much - all ages ... little kids, old people - everybody likes corn dogs," Juan smiled. He first tried these corn dogs from a friend who sold them.

CHEAP EATS: Lemon Tree Cafe

RALSTON, Neb. (KMTV) — Three Metro women are behind one delicious, new venture in Ralston. One owns Lisa's Radial Cafe. The other owns the popular pop-up Gravy Train. And the third owns the space for the new place. As 3 News Now Anchor Serese Cole reports, Lemon Tree Cafe combines two sisters' mouthwatering childhood memories with some of their own creative recipes. The charming space is home to the Lemon Tree Cafe.

The final restaurant at Blackstone's Kamp Food Hall is officially here. Nice Rollz opened a few weeks ago. It's primarily a fried rice shop, but this Asian restaurant also fuses Korean flavor into its cuisine. As 3 News Now Anchor Serese Cole reports — for the creator — the restaurant and the food they serve is personal. Nice...is how they roll.

Nice Rollz is inside Kamp Blackstone at 3618 Farnam. It's open Monday through Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

CHEAP EATS: Centi

It's still Summer - which means frozen treats are still in high demand. Omaha has a lot of options. But for the last year - a little gelato shop has been getting some huge reviews. The owner tells 3 News Now Anchor Serese Cole he wanted to bring something different to the Metro. She has the scoop on his Italian Ice Cream in this week's Cheap Eats. Inside the Hardy Coffee shop in downtown Omaha, you can get more than a good cup of joe. "The first impression is - is this part of the coffee shop? Are these coffee flavors," said owner Erick Landa.

Centi is located inside the downtown Hardy Coffee at 1031 Jones Street. It's open Wednesday to Friday from 2:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from Noon to 8:00 p.m. He also specializes in sorbets and there are vegan options. To see the full menu, go to centigelato.com.
