Fust Tabbed as Week 15 NCHC Rookie of the Week

Freshman forward Ray Fust was named NCHC Rookie of the Week for his efforts in the Mavericks Week 15 sweep of the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs. The Omaha newcomer doubled his season total in points with a four-point weekend and now has three goals and five assists on the 2022-23 campaign.

Fust becomes the fourth Maverick skater to win NCHC weekly accolades. He joins forward Matt Miller (Week 9), blueliner Jonny Tychonick (Week 9) and netminder Jake Kucharski (Week 3, 9). The Mavericks will wrap up their six-game homestand this weekend against the Miami RedHawks.

Pivonka's Late 3rd Period Goal Powers Mavericks Past Bulldogs

Graduate transfer Jake Pivonka took full advantage of a Minnesota Duluth turnover in the offensive when he buried the game winning goal with 6:57 left in regulation. Pivonka's fifth lamp lighter of the season propelled the Mavericks to a 3-2 victory in tonight's series opener.

The Bulldogs and Mavericks will meet for the final time this regular season tomorrow night when they drop the puck at 7:07 p.m. from Baxter Arena.

Head Coach Mike Gabinet Signs Multi-Year Contract Extension

Vice Chancellor / Director of Athletics Adrian Dowell announced today a multi-year contract extension for Omaha Hockey head coach Mike Gabinet through the 2026 season.
I really question why Gabinet got a multi year extension. I haven't seen exactly how long but heard at the UNO game Saturday night it be be an additional 5 years? I just don't know what he's done to deserve it.

Not sure where I heard that last Friday night. May be someone assumed it was the 2026-2027 season? Who knows. So basically he is guaranteed this season, 23-24 season, 24-25 season and 25-26 season?

I like Coach Gabinet and think he's a great fit for the program. I would also guess some of the length is for recruiting too?

I think he's a nice guy and a good person, and I really really hope this works out for both him and UNO. That being said, I don't think this was really merited based on past performance. The lone highlight of his tenure was the trip to the NCAA's. It was a Covid year with UNO getting to play so many home games by posting the NCHC pod. Other than that I don't think under him we've ever hosted a home conference playoff game or made it to St Paul for getting out of the first round. I would have liked to have seen more accomplishments on his resume before extending him this long.

Mavericks Ice RedHawks with 4-1 Friday Victory

The 12-9-1 Omaha Mavericks go wire-to-wire tonight to secure a 4-1 series opening victory over the Miami RedHawks. It didn't take long for the Mavericks to get going tonight as Junior forward Matt Miller turned the red light on just 60 seconds into tonight's contest. Sophomore forward Ty Mueller fed Miller perfectly backdoor on a 2-on-1 odd man rush to open the goal scoring. Senior forward Jack Randl tallied the secondary assist. Miami would answer to tie the game at 13:06 of the 1st period but it would be the last time they would find the back of the net for the remainder of the evening.

The Mavericks and RedHawks will put the wraps on the series tomorrow night from Baxter Arena with a 7:07 p.m. slated puck drop.

Guevin Earns NCHC Defenseman of the Week Honors

Rookie blueliner Jacob Guevin was tabbed the Week 16 NCHC Defenseman of the Week today. Guevin tallied five blocks, three shots, a plus-1 rating and an assist on the Mavericks fourth goal on Friday night. Omaha allowed just one goal in 120 minutes of hockey this weekend to cap off a 5-0-1 six-game homestand. Guevin is coming off of standout season in the USHL where he became just 10th defenseman in league history to record over 100 points. This season with the Mavericks, Guevin has tallied two goals and nine assists for 11 points with 35 shots on net. Guevin becomes the fifth Omaha skater to win NCHC weekly accolades. He joins forwards Ray Fust (Week 15) and Matt Miller (Week 9), blueliner Jonny Tychonick (Week 9) and netminder Jake Kucharski (Week 3, 9).

Still kind of crazy they are only 2 points out of first place in the NCHC (literally one win away) and the are still outside the top 25 nationally.

Latkoczy Named NCHC Co-Goalie of the Week

Freshman netminder Simon Latkoczy earned a share of this week's NCHC Goaltender of the Week with UND's Drew DeRidder. In two games played, Latkoczy had 60 saves and went 1-0-0 with a 1.20 GAA, .968 save% and a 40-save shutout in Saturday's contest against the then No. 9 Western Michigan Broncos. The 40-save performance was a career high for the Omaha newcomer against the NCAA's highest scoring offense (4.37 GPG).

Latkoczy and the Mavericks are idle this weekend before jumping back into NCHC play against Colorado College in a two-game home series on February 10th and 11th.

Unbeaten Weekend Earns Latkoczy NCHC Rookie of the Week

UNO 3, Miami 1

UNO is now in a 2 way tie for second and does have a possibility of clinching home ice tomorrow (with help from others).

Also some nice tributes tonight to Coach Paul Jerrard. Miami and Denver both did a moment of silence.
