Died January 9th? I'm surprised it took a whole month for the news to come out. Especially with the belated Christmas Story sequel getting such good press.

Burt Bacharach, Whose Buoyant Pop Confections Lifted the ’60s, Dies at 94

Known for his airborne melodies and sumptuous orchestral arrangements, Bacharach was one of the most important songwriters of the 20th Century.

Over his career, he scored 73 Top 40 hits in the US and 52 in the UK, working with artists including Dionne Warwick, Frank Sinatra, The Beatles, Barbara Streisand, Tom Jones, Aretha Franklin and Elvis Costello.
Bacharach's music touched multiple genres, from cool jazz and rhythm and blues, to bossa nova and traditional pop - but they shared one thing in common: you could recognise them within a couple of notes.

Vince Emmanual, fixture of Omaha's Little Italy, dies at 80

A fixture in Omaha’s Little Italy and beyond has passed away. Vince Emmanual was a longtime, and second-generation, member of the Santa Lucia band. His signature style on drums really grabbed attention. We sat down with Vince last summer when he described that feeling. “Because I'm getting old, and the music just kind of morphs me into some crazy guy, and I just start playing and throw my hands in the air and I can't stop until the music stops,” said Vince last July. Vince worked with local college students to help preserve the music that came to Omaha from Italy. He was 80 years old. The Santa Lucia Band returns to Omaha for the 98th annual Santa Lucia Festival

Longtime Chiefs wide receiver Otis Taylor dies at age 80

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Otis Taylor, the longtime Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver who along with quarterback Len Dawson formed one of the NFL’s dynamic duos, died Thursday after more than a decade of health problems. He was 80. Taylor’s family, who had been caring for him as he dealt with Parkinson’s disease and dementia, confirmed that he had passed away a mere seven months after Dawson, his close friend and teammate.

Taylor spent all 10-plus years of his career in Kansas City, where he was a fourth-round pick out of Prairie View A&M in the 1965 AFL draft. He went on to have two 1,000-yard seasons during an era in which the passing game was still evolving, and he finished his career with 7,306 yards and 57 touchdown catches.

Remembering football legend Bud Grant

Known for his stoicism and toughness, Bud Grant served as head coach for the team from 1967-1983, and then again in 1985. He led the Vikings to 11 NFC/NFL divisional championships throughout his tenure.

Former Creighton Men's Basketball Coach, Knicks Center Willis Reed dies

Omaha Loses Jazz Legend, Mentor, Close Friend, Ernest “Curly” Martin

Ernest “Curly” Martin. January 4, 1944 – March 13, 2023.

There is an African proverb that says, “When an old man dies, a library burns down.” We lost one of our most important libraries on March 13. The legend Ernest “Curly” Martin, 79, died after suffering a long illness. Curly was a musician to the world, a teacher to us all, family to many, a mentor to some, and a close friend of mine.

Going over to Curly’s house was a journey into Omaha history. He would lead me down to his studio where he practiced four hours a day every day and lifted weights in between. We would sit among his drum kits and analogue recorders and talk about the state of Omaha’s Black music scene. He would tell stories about the “Deuce,” the 24th and Lake Street area, in its heyday. Curly had the kind of stories that a musician who’s travelled the world and played with everyone from Etta James to Calvin Keys would have. But he would also tell stories about everyday life in North Omaha. I would hear about the Allen’s Showcase Lounge, and the alleys the musicians would traverse to hop from club to club. He would tell me who owned every store on 24th Street, and every musician who played the block, as well as those who left town to represent Omaha on the world stage. He was proud of North Omaha’s musical contributions to the world and its impact on it.

Joe Kapp, who led the Vikings to an appearance in Super Bowl IV, has died. He was 85.

Kapp’s son, J.J., confirmed the passing of Joe Kapp in an email to the San Francisco Chronicle. J.J. Kapp said that his father died after a “15-year battle with dementia.”

Joe Kapp played college football at Cal, entering the NFL draft in 1959. Selected in round 18 by Washington, Kapp opted instead to go to the CFL. He won a Grey Cup with the B.C. Lions in 1964, and he eventually played his way toward an opportunity in Minnesota, where he followed Fran Tarkenton and partnered with first-year Minnesota coach Bud Grant.
