Baseball Signs Six Newcomers for 2024

The Omaha baseball team added six new players for the 2024 season on National Signing Day: Grant Wagner, Grant Sommers, Kaizer Papenhagen, Carter Navin, Isaac Cychosz, and Trenton Burkhalter.

Grant Wagner
Wagner is a pitcher who comes to Omaha from Fort Calhoun, Nebraska, where he is a three-year member of the Creighton Preparatory School baseball team, as well as the Omaha Prospects club team.
Grant Sommers
An Omaha native, Sommers is a shortstop who also attended Creighton Prep and is entering his second season with their baseball team.
Kaizer Papenhagen
Papenhagen is a pitcher and infielder from Firth, Nebraska, and will play his third season with the Norris High School baseball team in 2023.
Carter Navin
Another Omaha native, Navin attends Elkorn South High School where he is a starting pitcher.
Isaac Cychosz
All the way from Stevens Point, Wisconsin, Cychosz was a pitcher, catcher, and shortstop for four years at Rosholt High School before attending Bryant & Stratton College.
Trenton Burkhalter
Burkhalter is a third baseman and catcher from Forest Lake, Minnesota.

Riedel Named Preseason All-American

DALLAS, Texas - The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) released its 2023 Preseason All-America Teams earlier today and Mavericks ace Caleb Riedel was named Third Team All-American.

Opening Day is only two weeks away as the Mavericks are preparing for to kick things off February 17 against UCLA in Los Angeles, California.

Omaha Baseball Ranked Third in Preseason Poll

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Omaha baseball team was ranked third in the 2023 Summit League Preseason Poll Wednesday morning, the league announced. This is the second season in a row the Mavericks have been tabbed third in the preseason poll. The league also announced its 2023 Players and Pitchers to Watch, with Mike Boeve being named for the second consecutive year and Caleb Riedel for the first time. Omaha earned 30 points in the poll, trailing only North Dakota State (36) and Oral Roberts (42). The Mavericks went 26-31 last year with a 12-12 record in league play. They advanced all the way to the Summit League Tournament Championship after defeating NDSU 5-3 in the final elimination game, but lost the following day to ORU in the title game.

Opening day is just two days out for the Mavericks as they head to Los Angeles California for a three-game slate against UCLA, beginning with a 7 p.m. game on Friday. After a four-game set at Fresno State, the Mavericks will return to Omaha and host Kansas State in their home opener on Tuesday February 28, at 5 p.m.

Golden Eagles take perch atop preseason #SummitBSB poll

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Reigning tournament champion Oral Roberts was selected to finish first in the Summit League Preseason Baseball Coaches’ poll released Wednesday by League officials. The Golden Eagles won their 20th Summit League postseason title in 2022.

The Golden Eagles earned 42 points and received all six first-place votes they could, while North Dakota State secured the remaining one and was pegged to finish second with 36 points in the poll voted on by the league’s seven head coaches. Oral Roberts led all Summit League teams with 38 wins a season ago and finished second in the conference standings with a 17-7 mark. The program received votes in the National College Baseball Writers Association’s preseason top 35 poll.

The Bison won the #SummitBSB regular season title for the first time in program history under the direction of first-year head coach Tyler Oakes. NDSU finished with a 17-5 mark in Summit League play and 31-19 overall record.

Omaha (30) took third in the poll and was followed by South Dakota State (24) as the same four teams qualified for the postseason tournament for the second year in a row. The Mavericks went 12-12 in conference play a year ago to finish fourth, while the Jackrabbits went 13-9 to finish third in 2022 standings.

Mavericks Shutout Bulldogs in Series Finale

FRESNO, Calif. - Charlie Bell, Wyatt Sellers, and Luke Gainer combined to throw a three-hit shutout today as the Mavericks blanked Fresno State 1-0 to pick up their first win of the season. Omaha (1-6) avoids getting swept in back-to-back series as they finish off their California trip with a win. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs (4-3) suffered their first home loss of the season as they managed only a single hit over the final seven innings.

Mavericks Surge Late to Take Down K-State

A frigid February evening was not enough to slow down the Mavericks as they staged an incredible comeback against Kansas State to win their home opener 7-6 on Tuesday night. Omaha (2-6) picks up its second win in a row and its first win of the season against a Power Five opponent, while the Wildcats (4-5) continue to fall with their fifth-straight loss.

Riding a three-game win streak, UNO is looking towards CWS



The UNO baseball team has traveled from coast to coast to play early season games. They are riding a three-game winning streak. FOX42's Bill Steckis reports part of the success comes from the play of Mike Boeve. The UNO baseball team has 16 players on the roster who claim hometowns in Nebraska. One of them, the Summit League Player of the Year, Mike Boeve. So far, the team has big wins over Fresno State, Kansas State and BYU.

And for one of the best players in the country, Boeve says he likes the fact that this squad is heavily armored with guys from Nebraska. "It's cool to play with guys that i played against in high school. Coach P says there is enough talent in the state to win a championship. That's true and it's cool to play with guys from Nebraska," said Boeve. Boeve finds it easy to focus on what's important, despite being the reigning player of the year and winning national awards.

"Those awards are nice but when you go out and play, they really don't mean anything. In summer ball too, it's good to see how you stack up against other players across the country. You are star struck at first but at the end of the day it's just baseball. The name on the front of those jerseys is not as intimidating as you once thought," said Boeve. In the near future those jerseys will have major league names on them. Head Coach Evan Porter says the pro scouts have eyes on Boeve. "Every organization has been in to see mike and I can't say enough good things about him. It's easy to root for a guy like mike and it makes it a lot easier when scouts are talking to me and the other coaches as well," said Porter. Granted, it is early in the season, but Boeve says the goal is to get this team to play downtown in June in the College World Series.

The Mavs will play the UNL Tuesday night.

Mavericks Win Back and Forth Game with Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. - On another frigid March night, the Mavericks and Huskers got into an offensive showdown, with Omaha eventually coming out on top 10-6 to take the first meeting of the season. Omaha (6-8) has now gone 6-2 since starting the season 0-6. As for Nebraska (9-5-1), their win streak ends at four games as they lose just their second game in the month of March. This is also their first home loss of the season after starting 4-0 in Lincoln.

Mavericks Split Doubleheader vs. NDSU

The Mavericks split their doubleheader with North Dakota State today as they held on to take game one 7-6, before falling 2-7 in game two. Omaha (7-10, 1-2) drops the series 1-2 to the Bison (5-18, 2-1) and will now have to wait until May 12 in Fargo before getting another shot at NDSU.

Facing the sixth ranked team in the country, the Mavericks got off to a strong start but were ultimately unable to top Arkansas as they were defeated 16-3 in the seven-inning contest. Boeve all business for UNO baseball



OMAHA (KMTV) — Mike Boeve has been “the guy” this season for UNO baseball. He’s leading the Mavericks on offense in overall hits, doubles, runs scored and batting average. He’s also emerged as a motivational leader. “I’m more of a vocal guy because it’s my third year here,” Boeve said. “I think I can have more of an impact on team success.”

Head coach Evan Porter agrees. “He’s one of the best teammates we have, one of the hardest workers,” Porter said. "And that’s a really good recipe for a team leader when one of your best players is your hardest workers” Boeve said he’s worked to get into the right headspace to maximize his performance.

Mavericks Take Series from Western Illinois

In their final Sunday of the season at Tal Anderson Field, the Mavericks rode an excellent pitching performance from Charlie Bell to a 3-2 win over Western Illinois to take the rubber game of the series. Omaha continues to hold on to fourth place in the Summit League standings at 18-22 with a 7-11 conference record. Meanwhile, the Leathernecks now fall to 6-35 on the year and 6-12 in league play.

Boeve Becomes Highest Draft Pick in Mavericks History

SEATTLE, Wash. - Mike Boeve made history one last time Sunday night when he became the highest draft pick in Omaha Baseball history after the Milwaukee Brewers picked him in the second round and 54th overall. Omaha's previous highest draft pick was two-time All-Star Bruce Benedict who went 99th overall in the fifth round back in 1976. Likewise, Boeve becomes the first player in Summit League history to be take in the second round and is the conference's fourth highest draft pick ever.

The 2022 Summit League Player of the Year and three-time First Team All-Summit selection established himself as one of the best hitters in the NCAA, slashing .360/.469/.526 (.995 OPS) in his career with 206 hits, 54 doubles, 94 RBIs, and 117 runs scored. In his final season, Boeve had a career-best .401 batting average, ranking him 22nd in the nation. Boeve concludes his Mavericks career as the team's all-time Division I leader in doubles and on-base percentage.
