Huskers Unveil 2023 Baseball Schedule

Image

Head coach Will Bolt announced the 2023 baseball schedule Monday, which features 27 home games at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park for the Huskers. The schedule includes five 2022 NCAA Tournament participants, including defending national champion Ole Miss. The Huskers take on the reigning national champion in regular-season action for the third time in the last 18 seasons after facing Oregon State in 2019 and Texas in 2006. Other 2022 NCAA Tournament participants include WCC tournament champion San Diego, Big Ten tournament champion Michigan and at-large selections Vanderbilt and Maryland. The conference portion has NU facing four of last year's top five Big Ten teams.

The Huskers open their 55-game slate in the Golden State for the first time since 2019, as the Huskers begin their season with a four-game series at San Diego (Feb. 17-20). The following weekend, Nebraska treks to Mobile, Ala., for a three-game set at South Alabama (Feb. 24-26). NU continues its season-opening road trip, as the Huskers are set to compete in the Cambria College Classic at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. The Big Red open with Vanderbilt (March 3) before battling Hawaii (March 4) and Ole Miss (March 5). Nebraska gets an early jump on its home slate and plays 14 of its next 15 games at Hawks Field in the month of March. The Huskers open the home schedule with a 10-game homestand that includes games against Northern Colorado (March 7-8), Illinois State (March 10-12), Omaha (March 14) and Nicholls (March 16-19). After a trip down I-80 to visit Creighton at Charles Schwab Field (March 21), the Huskers start Big Ten play with a home series with Illinois (March 24-26) before welcoming North Dakota State for a midweek game (March 28). The Huskers make the trip to Abilene, Texas, for a Saturday doubleheader against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Abilene Christian (April 1), and a midweek matchup at Kansas State (April 4) rounds out the four-game non-conference stretch.

NU hits the road for Michigan (April 7-9) before a midweek return visit from Omaha (April 11) and a home series with Northwestern (April 14-16). Nebraska welcomes Creighton (April 18) and visits Iowa (April 21-23) and Omaha (April 25) before wrapping up the month with home contests vs. South Dakota State (April 26) and Minnesota (April 28-30). The Huskers begin May with a midweek game against North Dakota State (May 3) and visits to Maryland (May 5-7) and Creighton (May 9). Nebraska wraps up Big Ten play with a home series with Penn State (May 12-14) before venturing to West Lafayette for the final series of the season at Purdue (May 18-20).

Charles Schwab Field in Omaha will be the setting for the Big Ten Tournament for the sixth time, having previously been the site in 2014, 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2022. The 2023 event runs May 24-28, and the tournament champion advances to the NCAA Tournament with the league's automatic bid.

Husker baseball: '23 prospect Jesske fulfills 'dream' by committing to Nebraska

2023 Lincoln Southeast infielder Will Jesske had been committed to Wichita State since the start of his senior year, but after a coaching change in December, Jesske made the decision in early January to decommit and reopen his recruitment. The decision was a bit of a risk, but after performing well at Nebraska baseball’s elite camp last weekend, the Super State player committed to the Huskers, joining the program’s 2023 recruiting class.

Hopefully Jeske makes it to campus. He looks good enough to get drafted. I assume how high determines if he makes it to Lincoln.

Absolutely! The MLB draft is always interesting for me on multiple levels. First to see how the Royals do, and second to see if any Nebraska recruits gets drafted and in what round.

Husker Baseball begins spring practice Friday

A couple quick notes from Nebraska baseball’s first practice of the year on Friday. I’ll have a more in-depth preview of things over the next few days, but Nebraska was out on the FieldTurf at Den Hartog Field at Lincoln East to get a six-inning scrimmage in before the weather gets worse this weekend. We heard from head coach Will Bolt, outfielder Garrett Anglim and pitcher Caleb Clark on Friday.

A lot of weather/first day excitement talk, but here are a few notes:
— All three who spoke noted that the team chemistry seems to be better this year — guys being a bit more loose, hanging out together outside of practices, etc.
— Bolt said he has about 12 or 13 position players who he believes have earned the right to start.

Keep promising myself to temper expectations this year due to all the new players, but if they could replicate a couple years ago it would be incredible.

2024 Husker commit Hayden Anderson talks NU pledge

247sports.com wrote:A “very short process” with Nebraska ended with Glenwood (Iowa) shortstop Kayden Anderson committed to Nebraska on Monday morning. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound shortstop committed to the Huskers after attending the program’s elite camp in January and picking up an offer following a solid performance. “I performed pretty well and they called me after that and said they wanted me and I really liked the program, I really liked the coaches and it was a done deal for me and my family,” Anderson told Husker247. “There were multiple things — I really liked the coaching staff. It felt like I fit there really well. I think it’s a great spot to put myself in to play as early as I can. Staying close to home, that’s always a positive and just the fit. It was perfect for me. A lot of things clicked for me.”

Nebraska baseball suffers 7-3 road defeat on opening night leaving 11 on base

Nebraska baseball began its season with hopes of new beginnings following a disastrous 2022 run. What followed on Friday night in San Diego was an all-too-real reminder of last year’s campaign. The Huskers fell apart in the eighth inning as the San Diego Toreros dealt head coach Will Bolt’s squad its first loss of the 2023 season.

Another Pitching Collapse Mercifully Ends in a Tie
The Huskers leave San Diego without a win

A tie may have been the best-case scenario for Nebraska baseball Monday. The Huskers held a 16-10 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning, but another opening weekend pitching collapse saw San Diego post six runs. Due to a travel deadline, no more innings could be played, meaning the series finale finished in a tie. Had the Huskers needed to see what other arms could trot out of the bullpen, the eighth and ninth innings could have been interesting.

Now 0-3-1 to begin the season, Nebraska heads to South Alabama for a series this weekend.

Husker Baseball Picks Up First Win of Year
Kyle Perry logs his first career save in 5-4 victory over South Alabama

Rebounding from a disappointing opening weekend, Nebraska baseball picked up its first win of the season, 5-4, Friday night against South Alabama. Pitching and defense were major problems in the Huskers’ opening series. Nebraska allowed 38 runs and committed four errors in four games against San Diego. Friday night at Stanky Field in Mobile, the Husker bullpen stepped up. Even though it allowed two walks and hit four batters, the bullpen gave up no runs on 3.2 innings pitched and secured a win for starter Emmett Olson.

Nebraska went from winless to .500 in the second weekend of play

Hitting hasn't been an issue for Nebraska baseball so far this season, and Sunday was no exception. The Huskers blasted four home runs to hammer South Alabama 9-3 in the series finale. The victory gave Big Red the series sweep and improved the season record to 3-3-1.

Huskers Win Fifth Straight in Rout of Hawaii
Jace Kaminska’s arm, Gabe Swansen’s bat lead Nebraska to 12-3 victory

Crooked numbers from the lineup? Check. Scoreless start on the mound? Check. Consistency and confidence? Check. After a frustrating opening weekend, Nebraska baseball has flipped its season’s trajectory 180 degrees by producing quality starts, solid bullpen work, and both power and clutch hitting throughout the Huskers' current five-game winning streak, the latest a 12-3 victory Saturday over Hawaii at the Cambria College Classic in Minneapolis.
