Archive.ph will also display stories with no paywall. It takes a few minutes to process though depending on the queue.

For those who don't want to sit on hold and go through a retentions spiel, according to the terms and conditions page, you can supposedly cancel via email.

Trying that now. I got the subscription during a “support local journalism” phase but I rarely read stories from them anymore since the main stories they push are all just consistently sports

The World-Herald getting out scooped by the Nebraska Examiner yet again with the stadium story is interesting. Do they just not have people paying attention to rumors and legislative bills?

All they mostly care about is sports these days. Plus, Cindy Gonzalez was one of the main ones at the OWH who reported these stories and she's now at the Nebraska Examiner doing the same.

I just got a renewal notice. Regular online-only subscription prices are going up 40% to $356 a year.

$30 a month for online only? That's absurd given the lack of content they produce anymore. I've been on the fence about canceling but that's going to push me to the "cancel" side of the ledger.

Curious, did the email cancel option work? Or is the "call and wait on hold for someone" option still the only way?

They are circling the drain and it’s obvious. They only report the sports and honestly between YouTube and the multiple Husker recruiting websites they offer no insight other than copying and pasting the same recycled stories. Good example of a corporation getting too big and losing all the great producers that made their content valuable and entertaining. But it may just be the state of media right now.

I didn't get a response, so I'll probably have to call when I get some free time. They usually charge my card around the 20th, so I've got a couple weeks.

The OWH reporters union released a statement saying that 25% of the newsroom left within the last month via layoffs and buyouts.

Would explain how they're continually missing big stories. Not a single writeup about Justin Wayne's streetcar proposal yet.

I know the Guild and it's employees are trying to pain Lee Enterprises and Buffett as villains here. But let's be honest, most of this industry is struggling. There are layoffs, buyouts and reductions all over the country.

It's impossible to keep a local news organization afloat with local advertising dollars and paying customers alone. It is what it is. It will take either deep charitable pockets or a completely new model to keep local news going in the future.

We already have that. The Flatwater Free Press and the Nebraska Examiner. You can get your shooting news on any of the local TV sites and there plenty of Husker sites. There is no need for the World Herald anymore.

I think the only thing keeping them alive was the older generations that simply refused to consume newer mediums and stubbornly kept their newspaper subscription. Sadly, those generations are rapidly shrinking (is there a nice way of putting that?). The OWH isn't going to sell too many subscriptions to younger Millennials and Zoomers. There's a lot of genuinely skilled journalists who have worked and are working in print media, but "the times they are a-changin'."

The "industry" is dominated by outlets like Fox News that is about to lose a series of billion dollar civil trials after their owner testified under oath they intentionally lied about election conspiracies to appease their dipsh!t fans for money. Legitimate news outlets like WSJ, WaPo, and NYT simply can't compete with the huge base of people that just want their own stupidity shouted back at them for assurance. It is becoming blasé to point out we are living in the movie Idiocracy.

How were local print news outlets EVER expected to compete against billion dollar media conglomerates?

I feel like there's insufficient demand for any supply of " honest and truthful journalists covering the hard hitting stories." As Big E stated, people want an echo chamber. People want sensationalism. People are outrage-addicts. News isn't news anymore. It's entertainment. Old school journalists working in an old school medium don't really fit that.

Totally agree with Big E!

On top of that, the sites with actual journalism are behind paywalls whereas the sensationalized stuff is all free. How can they compete with that?

It's all about building audiences for advertisers these days and the best way to do that is to reaffirm biases, never present uncomfortable truths, and generate outrage. There's a reason Fox is #1 and it has nothing to do with quality.

This article makes it sound like they have 40 employees left in the news room:

https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2023/03/08 ... s-he-sold/
RANDY ESSEX, The Nebraska Examiner wrote:When the sale was made final in March 2020, just as COVID hit, the World-Herald newsroom had about 80 employees. After reductions this year, the staff is about half that size.

Remember it was the Qwest/Century Link Building for years and years and Both Qwest/Century Link and the OWH had their signs up there. Buffett's businesses have been in there for years and I would assume if they were putting up a sign, it would be there by now.

This article from the Central High Register makes me pretty optimistic about the future of journalism in Nebraska. If we can get more folks like Jane writing for Omaha papers, we'll be fine.

It wasn’t published in 2022. I don’t think it was published in 2021.
They don’t publish much of nothing any more. There is really no longer a Sunday advertisement insert. Or a Saturday automotive section, And even mail delivery of a mid-week “food” section has completely stopped. They no longer publish weekend editorials either, it seems.
Will the last one left please remember to turn out the lights.
