Review: At Kros Strain, it’s all about figuring out what’s next

After a recent visit to Kros Strain’s La Vista tap room, it sure seems like that’s what the team of creative brewers is doing.

I honestly would love to see Kros Strain go for national competitions and at least bigger state wide or local region wide distribution.

They have entered and won metals for several different beers in national contest. As far as distribution, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas and South Dakota.

I know bars and restaurants only have so many taps, but I do get a little tired of seeing the same beers from the same local breweries. If a place has a Kros Strain beer on-tap, then it's probably Fairy Nectar. If they have a Zipline beer on-tap, then it''s probably Copper Alt. And so on...

I get it, but the local breweries don't make a 2nd beer that's typically popular enough to compete with their big brand. No restaurant is going to replace Fairy Nectar with something that might sit there for a couple of months and eventually have to be clearanced out.

I'm just happy we've gotten past the main local beer being on tap at bars and restaurants being Vanilla Bean Blonde. (shudder).

But yes, if it's Kros Strain, it's likely Fairy Nectar with a small chance of Helle's Creek. Zip Line is almost always Copper Alt. NBC is typically Cardinal Pale Ale. Pint Nine is Coffee Stout. Infusion is Vanilla Bean Blonde.

I'd much rather have Fairy Nectar over Goose Island IPA. It seems like most places that don't have Fairy Nectar have Goose Island, which is the Budweiser Garbage IPA.

How I've always heard it was that the craft beer craze had all of the big guys running scared 10-15 years ago. So, they went out and purchased some craft breweries so they could sell under those names and use their street cred. Budweiser bought Goose Island in 2011. They sell more craft beer by using their huge network of relationships to sell Goose Island IPA as, let's face it, nobody was going to buy Budweiser IPA. :)

Not sure "Running Scared" is the right term. Basically need to keep growing to keep the shareholders happy. But basically when Budweiser (or any of the big breweries) buys a smaller brewery, I stop drinking that beer. For the most part, I avoid the Budweiser beer: Goose Island (Except Bourbon County), Elysian, 10 Barrel, Breckenridge, etc.

I love Kros Strain, but I don't make it to their La Vista location all that often and since leaving a job downtown, I really don't make it to their location there. This is very convenient having a food and bev place out west. I hope they continue their success.

Great to hear Kros Strain is opening in that fast growing area of 180th and Maple. And it being unique in that it is also a food concept, not just brewery taproom with a food truck parked out front (which I do enjoy very much depending on the truck by the way) :) …

Can anyone confirm that this another location, and not a move from Portal Rd in La Vista? I doubt they'd want to leave that area (given the great neighbors in Pint 9 and Corn Coast), but just wondering...

Also, anyone have any insights into if this is just another taproom, or if they'll also brew here? I know they run pretty much at capacity much of the year with their current systems in La Vista...

My understanding it’s a food concept and tap room at 180th and Maple. Similar to what they have at Millwork Commons, minus the kitchen/food concept..

Their Portal Rd location is where they brew their beers..I don’t suspect they’d be uprooting that, plus the taproom anytime soon…
