Movies That Make You Feel Nostalgia

Tonight, I was happy to finally get a used copy of "Honey, I Shrunk The Kids." That movie's giant-size sets are still amazing to me. I loved that movie when I was young -- still love it now. I also feel childhood nostalgia when I watch "Flight of the Navigator." That movie has such great 80's synthesizer sounds & music, imo. Both movies still hold up well, imo. Another movie for me is "Annie." To this day, I still don't feel touched by movies like "The Neverending Story" or "The Dark Crystal", which were popular movies with other kids around me in my childhood. Curious... What movies give you that great feeling of nostalgia from your childhood years?

Do you mean all of them from Bambi & Snow White & Dumbo all the way to The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, and Alladin? (Those last three were around the time I was just growing out of childhood. I had to listen to my brother's CDs of the "The Lion King" and "Little Mermiad" soundtracks over & over & over. I still am sick of that "Under The Sea" song sung by that crab. Lol) I dont think since the three masterpieces of TLK, TLM, and Alladin has Disney come out w/ such great line of animated movies. I have never seen that "Frozen" yet, though. I'm not as much of a "cartoon person" as much as some people, so I dont seem to get "head over heels" over these Disney films as some. I tend to like the old Disney movies that involved live people (some of them are sorta dumb, though, imo). If a cartoon, I tend to like the Dreamworks-type stuff. If there is any cartoon movie from my childhood that gives me nostalgia it is the "Secret of Nimh." Thanks for sharing...

Mostly those that were out in rotation when I was young, and not to admit my real age, such as Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Fantasia, etc. I also really enjoyed a lot of the Disney non-animated films of the time such as (the original) Parent Trap, Shaggy Dog, Summer Magic, etc., and yes, Song Of The South too.

Age is just a number, Omahababe. Lol. Those are all great Disney classics -- for sure. Ive always gotten the evil queens between Snow White & Cinderalla mixed up. I havent seen any of those others, except Parent Trap (which Im glad you reminded me of, as that is one movie I still have to get for my "nostalgic collection"). Love that movie. (Even the newer version, with Lindsey Lohan, is funny & likeable -- yet nothing beats that perfect classic version, of course.) I forgot to mention "E.T." is another 80's nostalgic favorite of mine, so is "Back To The Future" and "Home Alone" and "Gremlins", too.

I'm hard pressed to think of ANY film, ever, where the remake is equal to, let alone better than the original!

A couple other genres which I do consider nostalgic are the classic Hitchcock thrillers. I really loved Rear Window although I probably saw it on its second or third release. I liked The Birds but Marnie scared the {expletive} out of me and gave me the total creepies! I was probably too young for it anyway. I skipped Psycho, no desire to see it.

Also the "Epic" films of the time. Cleopatra, Ben Hur, Exodus, Ten Commandments, How The West Was Won (original), Mad Mad World, etc. although we saw most of those in subsequent runs at neighborhood theaters, which of course, are nostalgic in themselves.

Also the various romantic comedies and such of the era, too many to mention. Those always seem nostalgic, even quaint, when I see them in reruns.

And then there was the whole Beach Party genre of the time! {twirling index finger}

I agree that the new Parent Trap pales in comparison to the original, but Lindsey Lohan plays a great freckled-face brat, plus its so funny to me when that that lizard goes into evil Vicky's open mouth on the nature hike, and that Redgrave actress is so classy & lovely as the sophisticated, big city mom, imo. Wow, all those others you mentioned I dont know a lot about -- except "The Birds." That was alarming & unsettling, especially for an old movie, with old fashioned scare tactics that seem so mild in today's time. I did buy "How The West Was Won" as a used DVD, and liked it and love that main, signature sountrack theme, but not well enough to keep. What show is "The Beach Party?"

Everyone i tell this to, takes it wrong, but the scene in the Godfather where Luca Brazzi sleeps with the fishes reminds me so much of Christmas at my Grandma's house. The big Oak craftsman era wood work and the Christmas cards taped to the wall. The setting just brings me back.

Nostalgic feelings are something different to us all -- and that's what's so interesting, imo. Funny, I still have not seen any of those "Godfather" movies to this day -- and I realize they are total classics, considered one of the top films ever, and practically have a cult following. Isnt that Marlon Brando in those? I always think Al Paccino, but that was "Scarface." I get those films mixed up. Ill have to see that eventually. It's funny how certain films brush your life, and other ones dont. For example, I know a girl who loves all the "Rocky" movies. I have the first one, because it is such an award-winning classic. But, those movies dont do much for me. Neither does "Cinderella Man." Neither does Walberg's "The Boxer" (or whatever it is called). However, "Million Dollar Baby" does do something for me. I could watch it over & over. I like all of Eastwood's films. This aspect is the same individually for each of us, even as kids.

Marlon Brando and Al Pacino.. The Godfather is the greatest movie ever made imo. It’s one of those rare films that even trumps the book (and I loved the book).. Brando’s performance puts it over the top for me..

You seriously haven’t seen The Godfather or Godfather II? Forget Godfather III- It’s okay.. But really doesn’t do the first 2 films justice..

You need to clear an afternoon/evening...

What show is "The Beach Party?"

Actually I was referring to the whole genre of Beach Party type films in the 1960s. There were TONS of them, most of them totally lame. The original Beach Party, Beach Blanket Bingo, Ride The Wild Surf {dot dot dot}. Yes, they probably seem nostalgic now. I did see many of them, as back then we used to go see whatever was playing at any of a few nearby neighborhood theaters.

The only one that I really remember was the worst of them all, where they tried to do a Creature From the Black Lagoon twist on the otherwise cookie cutter beach party film. Horror Beach Party or something like that. What I remember most is that they drive into the city to get some sodium (yes, sodium) to kill the monsters.

Oh well ...

OMAHACOWBOY: I do have to sit down and watch it. I've told myself that. It is such an epic film, I almost feel like I need a night where I intentionally tunnel-focus on it. I tend to watch a movie 75% at home versus 100% in a theater -- so I get nervous about "missing the hype" when I'm facing a big, epic, historical film for the first time at home. Shockingly, it is rated a staggering 9.2 on IMDB, and I learn that it is the 2nd highest rated film on there, with Godfather II following close behind -- both behind 1994's Shawshank Redemption as #1. (I have Shawshank Redemption, and it is excellent. Funny how I got it for $1 in a clearance section -- the top #1 voted film on IMDB. However, I cant imagine how that would beat a classics like The Godfather I & II. However, I like how IMDB doesnt "warm up" to a classic because it is a classic, and its fair across the board, to accurately judge any movie in any time or era, per probably an eatablished checklist of certain unchanging cinematic and story-telling principles. For example, 1939's WoOz has a great high score of 8, but you would think it would be higher with it's long-lasting, ongoing beloved film status. 1993's Jurrasic Park and 2004's Million Dollar Baby are both an 8.1, beating WoOz.) Are you talking Tom Hank's Forrest Gump? Or is that actually a remake of an older film? I ask because the movies you have on your list surrounding the 1990's Forrest Gump I know (and own) seem to be from another decade. Yet, maybe I just dont recognize those as other 90's movies? Just curious. Thanks for sharing. Its very interesting to me hearing what films had a role in people's lives (especially while growing up) .

I've been re-watching classic movies like the Godfather trilogy lately with the subtitles on. Not due to me being hard of hearing, but I've been finding that there was stuff in the dialog that I was missing. Subtitles have definitely helped me understand and better appreciate the characters and details in the plot.

I'm glad you said that as I never turn on those, and I sometimes miss things if I'm not 100% focused on the movie, like at home. (It's genetic. When I was a kid, I could hardly get a parent to sit down and watch a movie at home with me. Now, as an adult, I'm the same way.) Even in a theater, I can miss things in movies with more complicated/complex plots, like a "Mission Impossible" movie, although I generally understood what played out. Wikipedia is good about laying out the plot, btw, too. OmahaBabe: Gotcha!
