Becka's left leaning gaslighting won't be missed.

I wouldn't mind reasoned left-leaning discussion, but Becka was a grumpy, get-off-my-lawn old man who offered nothing constructive, nothing either side could hang their hat on.

John Knicely has been a staple in Omaha for as long as I can remember. But I'll be darned if he cannot make it through 1 news cast without fumbling his words. They must love him there.

And he thinks he's a modern-day Johnny Carson and he gives the impression that he believes that all the women on the set swoon after him. You can see that giggle-smirk when he starts on one of his pithy jokes. I can imagine Emily and Lauren sharing a drink after the show muttering about his latest cringe-worthy utterance.thenewguy wrote: Wed May 03, 2023 7:17 am John Knicely has been a staple in Omaha for as long as I can remember. Re: Omaha Local News Channels
I seldom watch local news on TV anymore, haven't for several years. I usually just glance at the headlines on my phone, this takes maybe a minute. If we are having a big weather day I'll watch the local weather forecast on the phone.Toto wrote: Wed May 03, 2023 8:14 amJohn is 71. He must have a nice gig with excellent pay and probably thinks he's somewhat of a local celebrity. Which he might enjoy that part. I'm guessing the job can't be real demanding. So he figures if they want to keep paying me I'll keep doing it till I can't anymore. My guess he'll retire at 75. Good for him if he likes what he's doing ! Not everyone can say that. Hopefully he uses all his vacation days.

It's time for his contract to not be renewed. He has to be making more than Jim Flowers was making when his contract wasn't renewed due to his "salary" if that's what you want to believe.thenewguy wrote: Wed May 03, 2023 7:17 am John Knicely has been a staple in Omaha for as long as I can remember. Malorie Maddox got tired of the SAHM life and is now Scooter's chief marketing officer. Judging by the PR photo, she seems to have set the RBF aside--for the time being.

Okay it is for tornados this time, but over 2 1/2 hours of storm coverage and no sirens. Did anyone watch?

Re: Omaha Local News Channels
Yes I did. You had multiple tornado warnings including spotter and viewer confirmed tornadoes on the ground in the Omaha station's viewing area. Coverage was warranted. If anything the decision by some stations (I'm looking at you seis) not to break in earlier should be questioned. I don't think they broke in until Rusty showed up at the studio despite having local news going on for much of the early event. The fact that Omaha had a decent chance of not be impacted by this didn't really occur until about 4:30 and even then it wasn't really certain until about 6 or so.S.O.Boy wrote: Fri May 12, 2023 7:17 pm Okay it is for tornados this time, but over 2 1/2 hours of storm coverage and no sirens. Indeed. If it’s in the viewing area I believe there’s an imperative to be reporting on it

They should be keeping everyone informed. I was asking was anyone watching, because my wife who normally watches, turned to streaming.

Re: Omaha Local News Channels
The Reader and El Perico are ceasing publication in September, as the local news scene continues to be reshaped. Publisher John Heaston posted a long note in an email to their subscribers this morning. A snippet:
"What started in the early 1990s as preserving the old Sokol polka hall that became today’s Admiral led to launching an alternative, investigative newsweekly with arts coverage that caught the wave that was Omaha’s indie culture explosion and all that followed.
Partnering with Omaha’s original bilingual media, El Perico, helped center equity in our coverage and contributed to a vibrant nonprofit and community media ecosystem, one that helped bend local news coverage to be more fair and just. It’s been nothing short of an incredible adventure and honor.
However, due to life circumstances, I can no longer do what’s best for myself or those closest to me by being a local media owner and operator. I intend for The Reader and El Perico to cease operations, effective by the end of August, and with our September issue."

Ugh, a significant loss of a local indie paper. Hopefully though John will be able to make the most of his personal time and enjoy life. Glad he's open to interested parties though.

It says John Heaston cofounded the Reader in 1994. Anyone know who the other cofounder was? Was it Kevin Simonson?

Re: Omaha Local News Channels
Not Omaha news, but Nebraska.....south-central Nebraska says good-bye to Chief "Forecaster" after a career spanning of 51 years. Kent Boughton took over for Bob Geiger at NTV while I was still living in Kearney (in 1999, very big shoes to fill despite dry sense of humor - he sparked my interest in weather). Bob was never able to fully recover from illness and Kent was the obvious choice.
Kent has had a rough several years but came back to a passion that he loved (despite only having a broadcasting degree) - working for all viewers to keep them informed and safe. He nearly lost his life in a car accident and battled for years to get back to work, and lost his wife due to a sudden heart attack. His Facebook page is full of his adventures, which includes pictures of his car after his accident and wondering how he was still alive.
Not sure what is going to happen to his FB once he is officially off the air, while personally I hope he keeps it up.
You always hear about people starting in small cities to leave to bigger markets (Matt Schick started at NTV, went to KETV and now at ESPN; Marg Helgenberger from CSI did weather here), so I think it is rare to see someone not seeking something bigger.

That he did. He was at KETV from 1982 to 1992, then went to WOWT and was there until 2012. Finally, he went to KMTV and was there from 2013 to 2016.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Sat Jul 15, 2023 6:13 amJim Flowers had the rare career of working as a meteorologist at KETV, WOWT and KMTV before he retired…mrsticka wrote: Fri Jul 14, 2023 8:34 pmI meant John Knicely. I Always thought Jim Flowers was a really good TV meteorologist. Very unusual to have worked at all 3 Omaha stations, that could be some sort of record.

Re: Omaha Local News Channels
That’s doubtful mrsticka. VERY doubtful. Especially since Flowers took the chief meteorologist position at WOWT before he left KETV- which opened the position for Randby in the first place. It is likely true- Randby may never have had the opportunity in the Omaha Television market. It was fortuitous Flowers left KETV when he did, opening the door for Randby. Julie Cornell is also Randby’s wife. But who knows..mrsticka wrote: Sun Jul 16, 2023 5:09 pmThat's not entire true. Maybe Bill would've gone to WOWT instead and became their chief meteorologist? Here in Lincoln, Ken Siemek is still at 10/11 after 40+ years. He's been there longer than Mel Mains was.
