Yeah, smoke from fires in western Canada making it down here.

Unfortunately it looks like El Niño is ramping up quickly and as a result, may become particularly strong. This could mean an early end to tornado season and an abnormally hot/dry summer for here which obviously would be no bueno considering the ongoing drought…

Smokiest I think I've ever seen it in Omaha yesterday evening.

I saw reports coming out yesterday that expect a hotter and drier summer for most of the central US. Again.

We could use some rain, I've noticed some Omaha lawns starting to look dry. Temps look to be heating up later this week. Will this summer be like 2012 which gave us near record heat and drought ? I remember one day back then we hit 104. But that summer it didn't start to get hot and dry till early July and the heat lasted till around Labor Day until we finally got some precip and cooler temps.

Yeah, it isn't looking promising we will see anything anytime soon either. "Maybe" some night time stuff late this week but chances are most precip in the coming days will stay in central/western NE.

Below are the depicted precip totals through the remainder of May.

The Countryside Art Fair is next weekend, June 3rd and 4th. I'm sure something will be in the forecast that weakened LOL!

It does seem like early June could be more active as far as severe weather/precip so it wouldn't surprise me - but who knows at this point.

As I was saying the other day, it looks like we are shifting into more of a summer pattern and highs this weekend will be in the upper 80s or possibly 90 and then next week will probably be in the low 90s (with humidity - especially next week).

Precip chances will finally start to increase next week as well as a trough SLOWLY pushes east which is why precip chances until then will stay in central/western NE. Severe weather also will gradually start to increase next week and especially into the first week of June. Obviously it's way too far out though to be confident or to know any specifics.

we had some rain on the west end of council bluffs last night. looked like it knocked down a bunch of whirly birds/buds that were still in the trees that the wind hadn't already taken care of. not sure how much though

Yeah, I looked last night and it looked like Council Bluffs got about 3 hundredths of an inch of rain (so barely anything unfortunately). A few very localized areas southeast of Omaha had higher amounts though (Glenwood area had around an inch of rain) but everything died out as it get close to Council Bluffs/Omaha.

Additional scattered showers and thunderstorms are occurring in parts of western IA currently (and they are barely moving) so if you're lucky enough to be impacted by one of those, you'll probably get some decent rainfall. Unfortunately none of them are close to Omaha currently though.

I live basically right across the river from Glenwood, I was hoping that would move our direction, but no such luck. There was a ton of lightning with it too.

Really got nothing in SW Omaha yesterday, except maybe a few drops. Don't recall such a dry May like this before. Could be devastating to farmers if this keeps up.

Yeah..

This lack of rain situation has become ridiculously critical.. This has got to be one of the driest May’s in Omaha history..

Unreal :koko: …

I don't see us getting .5" out or our remaining meager chances for the remainder of the month, so we can pretty well mark this down as the driest May on record. Ever. By a lot.

I doubt we’ll get even .10” rain before May ends (and probably not a drop at all). Rain chances don’t look to really increase until the beginning of June with increasing heat/humidity. It’s going to definitely feel like summer next week (especially late next week).

With the heat and humidity, damaging wind events will become increasingly likely along the northern edge of the ridge (similar to a July weather pattern). It’s too far out to really know where though.

At least odds have increased that we will get "something" before May ends. Possibly some scattered storms later today/tonight and then again the next couple of days. It's better than nothing anyway.

Towering cumulus is forming in eastern NE. Some slow moving briefly strong storms may develop over the next couple of hours. Shear is lacking so these would be more of the “summertime pop up” storms but if you’re lucky enough to get one, you would get some much needed rain. Unfortunately if they happen, they will be very scattered…

My gauge in north central Douglas County recorded a whopping 0.03 in. Around 2:30 am this morning. It didn’t last long but the ground was still wet in a few places around 7:00 am. The last more significant rain we got in May was around the 16th with .40 in the same location. Some our trees are clearly in distress. We lost a 15 year old Ponderosa Pine and the top of a 12 yr old River birch lost all of its leaves in the upper half. An older flowering Crab is slow to leaf-out. I gave them a good dose of water and the crab and river birch seem to be greening up again. We don’t have lawn irrigation. Nothing would beat a decent rain storm, but nothing excessive like they got in southwest Nebraska a few days ago.

No decent rain yet at my house in quite a while. it seems we have entered a warm/hot dry period a little early this year. Feels more like summer now than spring.

After repairing my sprinkler system over the long weekend, I don't even know if I'll bother to turn it on. Feels like my choices are to either allow the lawn to go dormant or get an OnlyFans to pay the water bill.

FINALLY - rain!! Even though the heavier stuff will probably stay south and it probably isn't going to add up to hardly anything in Omaha at least…RAIN!

Additional chances over the next few days too. Unfortunately we are so far behind in precip it's unlikely anything we get over the next few days is going to make much of a difference. But it's still better than nothing :)

At least it looks like we have some rain redeveloping just south of Omaha currently moving north/northeast (so should impact parts of the metro over the next hour or so). Again, not that it will probably amount to a lot but at this point, we will take anything we can get and HOPEFULLY additional stuff will develop throughout the day. Fingers crossed anyway.

My yard sure felt the driest May in Omaha history..

I actually had to start watering my lawn by the 3rd week of last month. I can’t remember the last time I ran sprinklers on my yard that early.. Usually I’m watering the lawn in earnest by July…
