Thanks for the link..
I’m not sure that’s a tower crane. Can anyone verify?..
I know they now have 3 cranes there, at least from what I saw last Saturday.. None of which were tower cranes as of yet…

Re: Mutual of Omaha Tower (14th & Farnam)
We’re getting closer and closer..Funny and true story, the other day I was talking to a young lady (early 20’s) who has become a friendly acquaintance- she lives downtown and loves it- we were talking about Capitol District and how Frank’s Pizzeria is open until 2am; also the new Steelhouse Omaha venue across the street. When I mentioned the tower construction at the old library site, she had no idea “so that’s what is going on there” was her response. Now she knows, lol..EricHaley wrote: Fri May 19, 2023 12:52 amThey appear to be accumulating tower crane parts right alongside FarnamOmaha Cowboy wrote: Thu May 18, 2023 11:49 pmThanks for the link..

Sorry if I missed it, but will there be any retail as part of the tower ?

It’s a HQ’s for a Foutune 500 company. No mixed use/retail was even part of the discussion in the initial “Project Beacon” plans before the public reveal in January 2022 from what I understand…
Perhaps if this was a mixed use development and Mutual was lured as a tenant, retail might have been part of that sort of plan..
But in this instance, Mutual is building this..For them…

Any retail inside the tower will only be available to the employees, just like they do/did at their current campus.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Sat May 20, 2023 12:54 pmI don’t think so at all..Duggers_Dad wrote: Fri May 19, 2023 11:47 pmHmm, I wonder if that generated controversy prior to approval ?Louie wrote: Fri May 19, 2023 11:12 pmNegatory, at least to my knowledge.Duggers_Dad wrote: Fri May 19, 2023 9:52 pm Sorry if I missed it, but will there be any retail as part of the tower ?

I drove by yesterday and it looked like they were putting together maybe a small tower crane? The other mobile cranes on site are absolutely massive, though...

Even if they don't put any public retail in the main tower, there is always the lot to the east of the tower that is currently being used for staging. I'm sure MoO won't want to block the view of their new tower, but it will be basically the most prime real estate in the city. Hopefully they put up a decently-sized building with a mix of retail and residential.

Dang! Well I guess we will have to tell the hot dog vendor to roll his/her cart out of the way. Wouldn't want to block the view.halgy wrote: Mon May 22, 2023 3:34 pm Even if they don't put any public retail in the main tower, there is always the lot to the east of the tower that is currently being used for staging. That's what I was thinking it was. Didn't seem like a tower crane.Visionless wrote: Mon May 22, 2023 8:22 pm Turns out that red thing we thought was a tower crane is actually some sort of drilling machine. Thought it looked oddly skinny to be a crane.

To me, it looks like they’re using that crane to drill pilings for the tower crane. The tower crane parts I mentioned previously can be seen on the right, across from the Paxton. Also, the work on the west side is right where the entrance to the parking garage will be.

I am tired of these comments. This isn't the first park in world to have a skyscraper built near it, and I can hope it won't be the last for Omaha. Shadows are a part of every urban park in the world, it wont be an issue. The park stretches all the way to the river if the sun is so important people can venture out of the "shadows" easily.thenewguy wrote: Wed May 24, 2023 9:00 pm can you imagine the shadow this thing will cast over the park in the evening?

I am not trying to speak for thenewguy, but I don't think he's being critical about it. I just think he's saying the shadow will be impressive particularly with no other building east of it. It's shadow is going to be huge and welcome during those hot summer afternoon and evenings.Flyer14 wrote: Wed May 24, 2023 10:48 pmI am tired of these comments. Re: Mutual of Omaha Tower (14th & Farnam)
I have a friend from Italy who came to visit a couple months ago. She has masters degrees in architecture and in urban planning*.
She loved seeing the park. I showed her the MoO site and told her what it was. First words out of her mouth were, “The shadow will be perfect for the park.”
She went on to explain why. Went into the city’s temperature and the angles of the sun, how the park will be used, etc. It was really fascinating. I wish I had written it down both so I could review it and so I could share it.
Anyway, her word is more than good enough for me. She’s a design genius.
*She also has impressive tech credentials, speaks fluent English, is young and, incidentally, hot. She’s from Milan, but she has a strange affection for Omaha. She’d wants to move here, but obviously US immigration policy would never allow that. So that’s just awesome, eh?
