Same here, I usually don't even turn my sprinklers on until mid-June at the earliest, this year it was early May.

I'm not very good with navigating weather.gov, but I assume they have a 'radar-estimated rainfall total' map somewhere on there?

Re: 2023 Weather Thread
Isn't that funny. We ended up with the record driest May ever... and yet here on the first day of June eppley has already recorded over a half inch of rain, which is a multitude more rain than we had during the entire month of May.

Honestly, I'm not sure if they do (or if they do, where and how up to date it is anyway).thenewguy wrote: Thu Jun 01, 2023 7:14 pm I'm not very good with navigating weather.gov, but I assume they have a 'radar-estimated rainfall total' map somewhere on there?
I always just use Radarscope (which is one of the main apps I use for storm chasing too) and allows me to see radar estimated rainfall totals in realtime - among other things obviously.
Anywhere in the light gray is a trace up to about .25", dark grey is .25" up to about .75" and the light blue is over 1". A narrow swath along and just west of I-680 and then southern parts of the metro and up toward Eppley got around .5" of rain so far with areas around and east/southeast of Council Bluffs over an inch of rain.

More coming up from the south - even a severe warned storm heading this direction (though it's a couple hours away yet - down near Beatrice currently)

I was just checking some of the home weather stations on weather underground and that half inch did check out.stormchaser wrote: Thu Jun 01, 2023 7:30 pm A narrow swath along and just west of I-680 and then southern parts of the metro and up toward Eppley got around .5" of rain so far with areas around and east/southeast of Council Bluffs over an inch of rain.

It's crazy that we've received more rain today than all of last month. And it hasn't really been that much. I'm seeing 0.18" where I am.

Most places in the Omaha metro now have rain totals near or in excess of an inch - with more light/steady rain on the way yet. Some exceptions include a swath west of 132nd to 204th street in the west metro and south of Bellevue where totals are generally under .25". That said most places saw some decent rainfall today.
Either way, some MUCH needed rain for many people.

Beauuuuutiful. I wouldn't be surprised if many of us got well over an inch out of that.
Funny thing also to mention is that during the noon news Caitlin Harvey was adamant that whatever we get today wont be severe, she said it at least twice. Now here we are, severe thunderstorm warnings all over the place

Unfortunately many TV Meteorologists know very little about predicting severe weather (in my experience anyway). Obviously some do but I’ve chased with some that had no clue and she’s one of them I’d say has no clue.Busguy2010 wrote: Thu Jun 01, 2023 10:01 pm Beauuuuutiful. It’s a mistake either way to say there is “NO” chance (there is always a chance this time of year). Sometimes weather is simply unpredictable.

100% agree, I’ve been doing it for nearly 20 years now and just when you think you have a grasp on what to expect, it throws you a curve ball.Louie wrote: Thu Jun 01, 2023 10:25 pm To be fair, predicting the future has always been a difficult endeavor.
My point is to become a TV meteorologist, you learn the mathematical side and chemistry/physics involved but that isn’t the same as interpreting model data, looking at visible satellite, surface maps, reading all the parameters on the mesoanalysis, reading and interpreting a skew-t, etc, etc, and knowing how it’ll all come together along with seeing/feeling what’s going on (by being out there). Sure you’ll learn some of it but It takes experience to really “know” (as much as possible anyway which of course is impossible sometimes), a college degree barely scratches the surface.
Either way, never say never this time of year. What she did is what inexperienced forecasters tend to do…until Mother Nature makes them look foolish. She learned a lesson today.

And to be fair, it was barely severe and forty years ago it wouldn't have met the SVR parameters of that period. WFOs are extremely risk-averse, it's like every office has a lawyer on duty.stormchaser wrote: Thu Jun 01, 2023 10:31 pm100% agree, I’ve been doing it for nearly 20 years now and just when you think you have a grasp on what to expect, it throws you a curve ball.Louie wrote: Thu Jun 01, 2023 10:25 pm To be fair, predicting the future has always been a difficult endeavor.

Re: 2023 Weather Thread
I agree though still, this time of year, anytime there is instability and breakable cap, the last thing you should say on TV is “no chance of severe weather”. It doesn’t take much to get a strong/severe storm going this time of year. Instead, she should have said “no widespread severe weather is expected” or something along those lines. It’s a common mistake for newer/inexperienced forecasters to insinuate certainty like that. Sounds like that’s what she did and doing so is mistake IMO.damonhynes wrote: Fri Jun 02, 2023 12:14 amAnd to be fair, it was barely severe and forty years ago it wouldn't have met the SVR parameters of that period. Got 0.38 in north central Douglas County. Trees and lawn might still have a chance after all. But I’m worried we’re heading into the normally dry time of the year. Every little bit helps, maybe we’re breaking out of the pattern that dominated May, one can hope.

That is funny, I lost all credibility in her about 2 years ago. There was another day she was vehemently adamant that we weren’t going to get more than a dusting of snow. All other weathermen said it was possible to get more. She stated it over and over again….4-6 inches fell. Needless to say, I turn the channel anytime she is on.Busguy2010 wrote: Thu Jun 01, 2023 10:01 pm Beauuuuutiful. I wouldn't be surprised if many of us got well over an inch out of that.

Re: 2023 Weather Thread
Scattered/isolated showers and thunderstorms will be possible again today in parts of eastern NE and western IA with the potential for a few of them to be strong/marginal severe (albeit brief, similar to yesterday).
These will be the more typical "summer time" popup storms so most places will see nothing but if you get hit by one of these, you could get some decent rainfall - like we did yesterday in the Omaha area.

Based on visible satellite and radar trends, odds are increasing that the Omaha area will yet again get storms today (especially western parts of Omaha and then another area to the east of Omaha in western IA).
Things are starting to develop now so by mid-afternoon, don’t be surprised if there are storms in the area.

Yep, storm developing currently near Bennington/northwest Omaha...and additional stuff will likely fire further south across the western half of Omaha itself (probably within the next 30 minutes roughly). No widespread severe weather is expected with these but don't be shocked if there are a few severe thunderstorm warnings in the region.
Additional storms are also firing south of Omaha. I'd expect these to fill in over the next couple of hours and "hopefullY' much of Omaha will get some decent rainfall again.

Severe thunderstorm warning for hail moving towards southern parts of Omaha (warning includes Sarpy county). Storm may or may not maintain it's strength though and could weaken before getting here.

Maybe it's just me, but I fondly remember weather days like this 20-25yrs ago that would be a precursor to very severe weather in the evenings and Nebraska ARES callouts in Lancaster county. Ahhh, good times.

Storms are currently developing in southwest Iowa (near Red Oak) and moving west/northwest towards the Omaha area. I’d expect scattered storms this afternoon into this evening in our area at least.
Isolated strong/severe storms are again possible. Hopefully we will add to the rain totals in the area the last couple of days.

The Lancaster County net and related emergency efforts were ran and coordinated extraordinarily well by the late Reynolds Davis. I moved up to Omaha and tried to participate similarly but noped right out of the REACT "meeting" after seeing how poorly ran and disorganized it was. A night and day difference between the two counties.damonhynes wrote: Sat Jun 03, 2023 1:23 amI was on Douglas County REACT for one season. That was one too many.
