since there are no floors below grade, it would seem like there could be relatively rapid changes in height in the coming months.

Sarcasm?
After I reread it, it sounds like a dumb-a ss observation on my end. But really, I would suspect there's not a TON to do after concrete has been poured, save for some sewer work, then everything will just be vertical construction that you can actually see happening, where as many others have a lot of below grade work to do and a certain percentage of the building isn't visible and height isn't noticed until many months later

I was actually commenting on the fact that there isn't any below grade work. Typically, you'll have at least some form of basement (garage, utilities, etc) on these buildings.thenewguy wrote: Tue Jun 06, 2023 10:34 amSarcasm?![]()

The project will have two tower cranes. Both concrete bases have been poured for them. The Reddit pic posted above shows them pretty well. One on the right side of the site with the blue crane piece already installed and one on the left side of the site waiting on its crane piece.

Nice, that's the tower crane base on the west side alright. I wonder what type of tower cranes will compose the duo

Not quite this crane, as there are many more buildings taller than this crane, as for the tower crane; yes it will be among the tallest.
A tower crane will always end up being the tallest structure in any city

Re: Mutual of Omaha Tower (14th & Farnam)
To be fair, I understand that the tower crane will be the tallest... But this crane, specifically, is taller than central park plaza, and appears to even be much taller than the land mark center as well. That means there are at most 8 buildings in Omaha that are currently taller, and there are thousands of buildings in Omaha. Even if you count radio towers, it's still in the top 15.

Tower cranes are interesting and all, but I’m more excited by the progress they’ve made setting all of those permanent pile foundations down to bedrock for the actual building!Brad wrote: Tue Jun 06, 2023 4:00 pm Is that a tower crane pad on the east too?

Re: Mutual of Omaha Tower (14th & Farnam)
Does anyone know if it's unusual to not have a basement in a building of this height. I wonder if the 15 story attached parking garage has something to do with not needing a basement. Omaha currently does not even have a parking garage approaching 15 floors, 8 or 10 floors would probably be our tallest garage currently. Thanks for the great pics !.

Re: Mutual of Omaha Tower (14th & Farnam)
it’s not unusual for a high rise not to have a basement. With so many substantial columns coming down from high above and with all the weight needing to be transferred to the foundation and piles, there’s really not much space left for other activities. As far as the 15-story parking garage goes, that seems pretty unusual, unless they’ll have elevators to take cars to the upper levels. I can’t imagine driving up a spiraling ramp for 15 stories.Cermak wrote: Tue Jun 06, 2023 5:42 pm Does anyone know if it's unusual to not have a basement in a building of this height. Right, I'm curious about the 15 story parking garage myself. I'm guessing some other cities might have some but I wouldn't think they are very common. After checking google earth I did find a 12 story parking garage in downtown KC, I actually parked there once when I visited the NCAA basketball experience museum at the Sprint Center years ago.GetUrban wrote: Tue Jun 06, 2023 10:07 pmit’s not unusual for a high rise not to have a basement. Re: Mutual of Omaha Tower (14th & Farnam)
there are several renderings in the urban core strategic plan that show MoO with a tower to the north (on the other side of UP headquarters) and a tower directly to the east where all the construction trailers are currently located. what a difference that makes to the overall skyline, I hope that their vision comes to fruition...

so i was cruisin around on the big ole hole in the ground and they are working on these:

does anyone know (brad maybe?) if the tube represent the full depth of the pilings, or if this is in addition to what is in the ground? They look huge, but i really don't know how deep they have to go to support a nearly 700' tall building...

it also looks like the removed a lot of dirt in the north east corner of the lot. The other day there were dump trucks driving through that area where fill has been removed

I think those have yet to go fully in the ground, but are partially in. I've seen some prior to going in being tall enough to rise above camera.

The bedrock is around 80 to 90 feet deep in this area. The casings that are sticking up haven't been driven into the ground yet.

Passed by earlier and the two piles are no longer above the ground. Looks like that's all of them, as I no longer see any piles laying horizontally.

I drove by this week as well for the first time in about 3 weeks. Even if you don't know much about building construction, anyone can tell something big is going on here more than a 3 or 4 story building is being constructed. Unless you're in Chicago, NYC or heck even Austin you don't see this type of construction very often. Exciting to watch it.

LOL, Not to take this construction of our new Mutual skyscraper off topic, but what do you mean by that comment? A Stretch? Omaha IS a healthy and growing metropolitan area. Re: Mutual of Omaha Tower (14th & Farnam)
Still surprised this doesn't have some sort of a basement. Even the 9 story apartment building currently going up In Blackstone (37 West Farnam) has a fairly deep basement. Just looks strange without one. I wonder if the 15 story parking garage has something to do with it not needing a basement.
