This weekend is Alumni Weekend at Creighton University, including all of the professional schools. As part of that event the school set up numerous activities for alumni and their families. As an alum I took the opportunity yesterday to go on one of the campus tours, since other than leading myself on a couple of self guided tours on summer Sundays in past years I have spent very little time on the main campus in 40 years.
Well, after walking in the Harper Student Center about all I could say is that if my head could spin like the girl in The Exorcist it would still be spinning today! Effing night and day different than when I attended in the late 1970s into the early 1980s. There is essentially an on campus Apple Store housed in the Harper Center, across from one of two Starbucks coffee houses. I was told that the Starbucks located on the west side of campus in that student center was for a time the busiest Starbucks in all of Nebraska. Students can add use of Starbucks to their meal plan, and thus use them on an unlimited basis. That might explain the long lines even after 10 am.
Probably half of the structures on campus didn’t exist when I attended. Some that did have been enlarged or repurposed. The old Admin Building still stands proud, but one of the larger student housing halls bit the dust earlier this year and one more will probably disappear next year, I was told. Virtually all on-campus student housing is more apartment style, with 4 bedrooms and 2 baths, plus kitchenettes and shared living room space. The newest student housing building, for freshmen, just opened a few weeks ago. A new housing structure for Jesuits who live on campus is rapidly taking shape along 24th Street, next to the Admin building.
The fountain that for over 40 years has adorned the front of St. John’s Church has been removed for a complete replacement of the plaza in front of the church. It will return later this autumn with a square, rather than rounded basin.
I also attended an Open House at the Ahmanson Law Center building, where I received my JD degree. The law school building was 5 years old my first year of attendance. Next year it will mark its Golden Anniversary. It was cool to see the plaques of each graduating class. There was my father in the Class of 1944, and my uncle in the Class of 1947.
The campus has really come of age over these past few decades. It’s grown in size and the facilities are so much nicer now. It truly has become a beautiful campus. The best I guess I can say, looking back, is that “we never knew we had it so bad.”

for what it's worth, that starbucks is still one of the busiest And you are absolutely right, nativeomahan, it really is a beautiful campus. My brother graduated from there in the mid 2000's and driving by now it's even so much different than when he went there. Good to see the school doing good things

Creighton, College World Series officials pitch $60 million request for health center, ballfields

Officials with Creighton University and the College World Series made a pitch Tuesday for $60 million in state funds to help finish a trio of projects, including a new baseball field for the university’s team and the CWS.

One project is completion of the $90 million C.L. Werner Center for Health Sciences Education, which was portrayed as a way to address Nebraska’s workforce shortage in nurses, physicians and other health-related fields.

Another was a series of projects to beautify the university’s Omaha campus and convert some streets to pedestrian use.

The third project was to build a complex of baseball and softball fields near Charles Schwab Field that would serve as practice fields for CWS teams, home fields for Bluejay baseball and softball teams, and community use, including youth baseball tournaments.

He told members of the Legislature’s Appropriations Committee that Creighton will match the $60 million dollar-for-dollar if the Legislature decides to fully fund the request contained in Legislative Bill 444.

He said $14 million of the funds requested would be used to equip classrooms and laboratories in the health services center, which is scheduled to open this fall.

The baseball field, which would use $13.7 million, would become the new home of the Creighton Bluejays baseball team and serve as a practice field for teams playing in the CWS.

Creighton is seeking $11.4 million for the softball field. Hendrickson said the baseball/softball complex would also be available for community use, including youth baseball tournaments, which attract teams from 40 states during the CWS.

The remaining $20.9 million would be used to increase green space on the CU campus and renovate Burt Street, from 20th to 27th Streets, to enhance its use for pedestrians and cyclists.

The state just doled out grants and Creighton was awarded $30 million. So maybe we'll see these new fields sooner rather than later.

Notable haunted house becomes a ghost as demolition crews tear it down

An old haunted house in Omaha is now literally a ghost. Mystery Manor closed after 38 years in business. Construction crews were out at the 18th and Burt streets site to demolish the old building. The Douglas County Assessor said the property had been sold to Creighton University, but it's not clear what the plans for the space are just yet.

No, it's not Mystery Manor. This building was a 2-story brick building that for many years had painted boards over the windows.

City Council will be reviewing and likely approving the vacation of Burt from 27th to 20th. There are a lot of surface parking lots between Cuming and Burk along the planned ped/bike way. I wonder if they have plans to build on those parking lots.

One of them, Swanson Hall is roughly the same height and shape.

Edit: Scratch that, they're the tallest on the primary campus, I forget about Kenefick Hall and Heider Hall, which are both taller but are south of I-480.

I hope they don't tear those down. They really fill in the edges of downtown.

Looking at this building, I see that there's no reason to attempt to preserve it. It looks bland and out of date.
I sure hope they have a replacement building that is an upgrade and tall. Hopefully campus construction is not slow because the previous building and the water fountain feature took long to build.

Creighton University unveils new Jesuit residence,
approximately $24 million project



Creighton unveiled its new Jesuit residence. The total cost for construction, demolition of old structures, and renovations to the Jesuit Gardens was approximately $24 million. The project was supported through private donor investments. The new building, complete with its own chapel, is the third new building to open on Creighton's Omaha campus during this academic year.

The fountain sure looks way better than the old version. It was a slow building process but they made the fountain look both modern and traditional at the same time.

Looks like they demolished just 2 columns of the building. As my picture from 2 weeks ago shows in comparison to Brad's most recent.

There sure was a giant pile of debris and now the pile is small, probably because they first had to cleanup and remove the debris offsite, in order for demo gear to get closer and continue.

I am back to driving on North Omaha Freeway and coming into downtown to take a son to Central. I will say with Kiewit dorm now gone it looks kind of empty or off, Hopefully Creighton has plans for something of similar size to replace it.
