If a streetcar line were to go to the airport it would be best for it to operate in its own right-of-way for most of that journey. Portland's MAX Red Line and Salt Lake City's UTA Green Line are both streetcar lines with service to the local airport from downtown. Downtown they operate on the street but away from downtown/closer to the airport the tracks are off-street in their own ROW and the trains are capable of speeds fast enough for that journey to to be worth it for those with other options.

my biggest hope for Eppley is that the new concourse has higher ceilings and they open it up a bit. It always felt a little tight in there to me.

100% I agree. I would envision it not being in the street by just east of Abbott drive (50' or so) as it moves east of the stadium. I've rode the one to PDX airport several times, filled with people with suitcases and employees heading too and from airport. SLC line is newer and haven't ridden that one yet. If it's extended to the airport, the ridership will double, mark my word.TitosBuritoBarn wrote: Wed May 31, 2023 7:25 pm If a streetcar line were to go to the airport it would be best for it to operate in its own right-of-way for most of that journey. I agree, but that's not the point of the streetcar (at least initially). I just can't understand why the airport can't at least get a shuttle bus or something. You can also argue that the airport would lose a lot of parking revenue. I am forced to drive my car because of that literal last mile.joleo wrote: Wed May 31, 2023 9:44 pm If it's extended to the airport, the ridership will double, mark my word.

Re: Omaha Eppley Airfield
For tourists, most if not all hotels downtown offer a free shuttle.
If you research different modes of transportation, a streetcar is absolutely not ideal for the stretch to the airport. If anything it would be a shuttle or light rail.

You just answered your own question. Over a third of the airport's operating revenue (by far the largest component) comes from parking.TransitOriented wrote: Thu Jun 01, 2023 2:26 pm I just can't understand why the airport can't at least get a shuttle bus or something. Re: Omaha Eppley Airfield
With a transit line they can make up at least part of the revenue by charging an additional fee to board at the airport. Chicago does this. A typical 'L' ride costs $2.50, but from O'Hare it's $5. I can't say I know where that extra $2.50 goes in Chicago but I can't see why it couldn't go back to the airport.Mr.Nuke wrote: Thu Jun 01, 2023 2:48 pmYou just answered your own question. Ok, the hotel reality called. The only, ONLY reason a streetcar has gotten this far and probably will happen is that it is being paid for in large part by private entities. I can't see any reason that this scenario would come to be with an airport to downtown proposition.

Hopefully we'll be seeing the actual renderings here in the next couple months so we can see what the vision is.thenewguy wrote: Wed May 31, 2023 7:58 pm my biggest hope for Eppley is that the new concourse has higher ceilings and they open it up a bit. It always felt a little tight in there to me.
I'm also hoping they have nice, high ceilings with a lot of light so it doesn't have that dungeon feel.
We do know it sounds like they want to put a canopy over the whoe drop off/pick-up up area.
It also looks like they are going to be doing ticketing on the 2nd level. TSA will be centralized on the 2nd level. I hope they don't make that too much of a pinch point, because it looks like maybe 5-6 lanes of TSA and then 1 exit lane for passengers leaving the terminal based on the current renderings? I wonder if that'll be an escalator or something similar to go down to ground level for the baggage claims. I know some airports have things separated as far as those arriving on flights and those leaving so you don't even really cross paths except after TSA.

But that tight feeling is what gives Eppley Airfield that warm cozy homely feeling, though high ceilings could evoke grandeur. So there are benefits to both approaches or even building hybrid ceiling heights would also yield both benefits.thenewguy wrote: Wed May 31, 2023 7:58 pm my biggest hope for Eppley is that the new concourse has higher ceilings and they open it up a bit. And you think uneasy and stressed do to the lack of perceived enclosure? There's a reason some airports use mixed ceiling heights to provide a different feeling, depending on the area of the airport.Louie wrote: Fri Jun 02, 2023 4:52 pmI don't think 'cozy' or 'homely' are what most are looking for in an airport.Renovator2559 wrote: Fri Jun 02, 2023 4:50 pmBut that tight feeling is what gives Eppley Airfield that warm cozy homely feeling, though high ceilings could evoke grandeur. I'm just sayin'
If you don't build the main terminal to the North, the design is garbage. The new garage is so far from the main terminal now. If you are building gates to the North, you need the terminal to be more central. I did a mock-up of the terminal a while back. The security venue should be where the far North part of the terminal is. You can expand both ways easily. It leaves a lot of building for offices to the South. It is very short sighted for OAA to see what they have open to the North and how they have cut off expansion from the South (due to the new South Lot, which totally was needed). Best case, build out the North side hard. Ticket counters, baggage, etc. I like security on L2 being right where it currently is in North side. Obviously double/triple/quad the lines. Make a concourse to the North. It allows expansion and combines the current parking to be more in the middle. OMA does not have to be beautiful, it it should make some sense. I love OMA, and if we need to expand, lets do it smart. Make it the best place to land, depart and hopefully connect .Can we express being small town, amazing and thought out functional. If we can get the architect's out of their heads, we can be a premier airport.

ok. I took another look at the current renderings. I know they are not the final plans but it appears that ticketing will be upstairs and arrivals and bag claim on the lower level. I'm wondering, based on the renderings, if the departures entry will somehow be within the parking garage. Maybe lose some parking so drop off lanes will be in the garage and the arrival lanes will be the current ones?

I see 10 rows of x-ray belts on the renderings. They're designing an airport for the next 35 to 40 years of growth. I have a feeling they've factored in people flows and potential pinch points. The exits at any airport are going to be deliberately be pretty narrow as it allows you to control access to the secured area.Bearcat06 wrote: Fri Jun 02, 2023 3:05 pm TSA will be centralized on the 2nd level. Yes.Bob from Omaha wrote: Mon Jun 05, 2023 2:11 pm ok. I took another look at the current renderings. I know they are not the final plans but it appears that ticketing will be upstairs and arrivals and bag claim on the lower level.
Three lanes were going to go in and through the garage as last we heard. We don't know what those lanes were going to be for. The airport had said they estimated 60% of passengers would be entering on the 2nd level, which does seem pretty hard to get to unless departing traffic was going to be routed through the garage.Bob from Omaha wrote: Mon Jun 05, 2023 2:11 pm I'm wondering, based on the renderings, if the departures entry will somehow be within the parking garage.
But then again we haven't really seen anything directly addressing it either other than them saying 10 lanes. 4 for regular pickup/dropoff, 3 for commercial and 3 for ride shares. That would suggest the rideshare or commercial cars are likely the ones going through the garage.

If you look at the rental car facility, it’s very nice. What a treasure it is being right inside the airport and the design is as nice as I’ve seen in a rental facility, aside from PHX (brand new and also well done). If they match that design throughout the airport, I think we will all be proud of the finished product.flick70 wrote: Fri Jun 02, 2023 11:18 pm I'm just sayin'If you don't build the main terminal to the North, the design is garbage. Let’s see what comes out soon. Some of the best in the nation are working on this project and the airport authority isn’t short on cash compared to other airports. Their credit and bond ratings are excellent. I am anxious to see some detailed plans, hopefully soon!

Re: Omaha Eppley Airfield
I am flying out of Hartford CT (BLD) today for the first time and its layout is similar to what I have seen posters wanting at Eppley. I was dropped off at the upper level and the airline checkin desks were right there. Then you walk down to a main center area where all the TSA gates are. Once thru you go left or right to gates. When I flew in I walked down to the lower level to get picked up. Oh and it looked like the parking garages are right across the street from drop off and pick up areas.

Yeah my response was more based on getting dropped off at the upper level "and a layout similar to what I've seen posters wanting at Eppley". BDL has an upper and lower road for arrivals and departures as do many other American airports that we are pretty sure Eppley isn't going to have. And what people want the layout to be at Eppley is somewhat irrelevant at this point as it is likely largely set.thenewguy wrote: Tue Jun 13, 2023 7:43 pm unless he's referring only to the larger window openings, longer concourse, etc, rather than the structure appearing to be functionally the same layout?
BDL has an attached hotel that Eppley doesn't, and while having a central security check point it isn't a linear terminal. Other than that unified check point and having food post security it is pretty much like Eppley now that you've got two distinctive wings. I have a feeling Eppley wished they had the gap between the parking garage/s and the terminal that BDL has to run the upper and lower roads (and quite frankly in the terminal to garage section it isn't that much wider...).

Re: Omaha Eppley Airfield
At the Detroit airport at the Delta terminal there are three levels. Departures on top, arrivals in the middle and international arrivals on the bottom. Detroit is, as I understand it, a major international hub for Delta. Per Wikipedia "Detroit – One of Delta's two Midwest hubs. It is the primary Asian gateway for the Eastern United States and it also provides service to many destinations in the Americas and Europe. Former Northwest Airlines hub."
In the other terminal where the rest of the airlines are there are two roads, upper for departures and lower for arrivals.
Lately I've been thinking that maybe there should have been an airport between Omaha and Lincoln. Tons of land, intestate access, enough of the parochialism between Omaha and Lincoln, potential for some kind of rail service to each city, etc.
It won't ever happen now of in the future but maybe it would have been the best idea. Yes, OMA is close to downtown but how many cities actually have their main airport that close to downtown? I am not sure I see it as that much of a plus.

Perhaps if everyone had had the foresight to see how the cities would grow back in the day i..e. Omaha expanding South West and West and Lincoln to an extent expanding North as we well as Gretna and Elkhorn, and Millard emerging as suburbs... but as it stands, in 2022 Eppley carried 96% of the traffic and Lincoln carried 4%. It isn't really clear to me what a centralized airport would gain in that scenario. We effectively already have it now, and it is Eppley based on the traffic patterns.Bob from Omaha wrote: Tue Jun 13, 2023 11:39 pm Lately I've been thinking that maybe there should have been an airport between Omaha and Lincoln. Take this for what it's worth, since this is merely anecdotal, but the company I currently work for (as well as past ones), we've had our share of travelers and they all remark how easy it is to get to/from Eppley and to points around Omaha. As an aside, they have also said that Eppley itself is a breeze to get through, partially because of its size, but also because it seems like the staff has a good routine. I hope the new changes further enhance that experience.
Regarding processes: I had to fly to O'Hare recently, and they had issues with a few different screening lanes so they had to redirect everyone to a different [single] lane (which made for a long line) and when they finally worked out the kinks of whatever was going on, they didn't take those that were waiting the longest, they just opened them up (annoying, especially since they were all adjacent to each other). Conversely, I did fly through Laguardia in the fall, and it was completely painless despite the number of travelers (and is one of the nicest airports I've been to)

Longest TSA line I've been in was Denver on a Sunday afternoon, took us around 45 minutes to get through. Atlanta has usually been pretty quick and painless, maybe 10-15 mins which is pretty good IMHO given the size of that place.
Quickest was Burlington, VT...one other traveler in front of me and 2 TSA agents ready for someone to walk up. Second quickest was Grand Junction, CO. Probably would have been quicker than Burlington, but they had an out to lunch sign put up, so we had to wait 20 minutes for them to get back from lunch break.

Re: Omaha Eppley Airfield
My point about an airport between Omaha & Lincoln was simply that Eppley is pretty landlocked. An airport between the two cities could have acquired twice or more the area of Eppley. In addition, It could have spurred a ton of development around it, including larger industrial users.
Yes, relatively speaking Eppley is quite easy to get to and does draw from western Iowa, parts of South Dakota and parts of northern Kansas and Missouri. I-80 andI-29 do make it easy to get to. An airport directly off I-80 west of Omaha would similarly be easy to get to.

Based on a post on another site United may be opening some sort of maintenance operation at Eppley (probably a line station).
They've got a related job posting for Aircraft Maintence Technicians in Omaha on their jobs site.
https://careers.united.com/us/en/job/OM ... 0-per-hour
There was also a line item on the February board meeting notes that went over my head at the time for a "United Airlines Facility Agreement."

And I'm not sure the catchment would really change at all. I'm presuming OMA already pulls from basically Grand Island east to Omaha and some Des Moines and Western Iowa. Lincoln doesn't have much service so I'd think most Lincolnites travel through OMA. Could there have been different/better industrial growth? Hard to tell. Omaha has a couple Fortune 500 companies with headquarters downtown. Does a 10 min drive vs a 30-45 min drive change that? Granted if the airport had been put out by Gretna there is probably better rail lines for air/rail transport then. What it's are hard to speculate.

Interesting find. It would be nice to create new jobs for students graduating from local aviation technician programs.Mr.Nuke wrote: Thu Jun 15, 2023 3:07 am Based on a post on another site United may be opening some sort of maintenance operation at Eppley (probably a line station).
They've got a related job posting for Aircraft Maintence Technicians in Omaha on their jobs site.
https://careers.united.com/us/en/job/OM ... 0-per-hour
There was also a line item on the February board meeting notes that went over my head at the time for a "United Airlines Facility Agreement."
https://www.flyoma.com/wp-content/uploa ... -14-23.pdf
On the agenda, there is also a line item about a facility agreement with Reynolds Logistics. The only thing I could find on them is that they're some Dublin based logistics company.

Yes, Eppley is pretty landlocked but at 2,650 acres and SeaTac at 2,500 acres , I think they can make it work.Bob from Omaha wrote: Thu Jun 15, 2023 1:14 am My point about an airport between Omaha & Lincoln was simply that Eppley is pretty landlocked. If I had to venture a guess, Reynolds Logistics may be expanding their business of aviation fuel services to the US.
From their website:

San Diego makes it work pretty well at a quarter of Eppley's size; 663acres, one runway (9,400ft), 22M passengers, 70 non-stop destinations.EastCB wrote: Thu Jun 15, 2023 4:30 pmYes, Eppley is pretty landlocked but at 2,650 acres and SeaTac at 2,500 acres , I think they can make it work.Bob from Omaha wrote: Thu Jun 15, 2023 1:14 am My point about an airport between Omaha & Lincoln was simply that Eppley is pretty landlocked. Yeah, runway space is not an issue for Eppley IMO.almighty_tuna wrote: Thu Jun 15, 2023 4:34 pmSan Diego makes it work pretty well at a quarter of Eppley's size; 663acres, one runway (9,400ft), 22M passengers, 70 non-stop destinations.EastCB wrote: Thu Jun 15, 2023 4:30 pmYes, Eppley is pretty landlocked but at 2,650 acres and SeaTac at 2,500 acres , I think they can make it work.Bob from Omaha wrote: Thu Jun 15, 2023 1:14 am My point about an airport between Omaha & Lincoln was simply that Eppley is pretty landlocked.
