Pro volleyball team coming to Omaha in February 2024

Omaha has been selected as one of at least eight cities to host a new professional volleyball team starting in February of 2024. According to the new Pro Volleyball Federation, teams will play at least 16 matches and have up to 14 players per team with each first-year player earning similar to that of a first-year WNBA player. Recording artist Jason Derulo has been announced as one of the co-owners of the Omaha team.

The following is a news release from the site ProVolleyball.com:

One of the United States’ most rabid volleyball hotbeds now boasts a team in North America’s premier women’s professional volleyball league, as Omaha businessman Danny White and performance artist Jason Derulo announced that they will launch a Pro Volleyball Federation franchise in Omaha, NE, during the league’s inaugural 2024 season.

The news of the new Omaha team comes at a time when Pro Volleyball Federation will be making numerous market announcements in the coming days. Omaha is the second market to be publicly announced. The team will hold a local celebration in Omaha in the weeks to come to officially introduce the city to its first major women’s professional sports team.

Omaha announced as second city for new pro volleyball league
One of the United States’ most rabid volleyball hotbeds is getting a professional team.

OMAHA, Neb. -- One of the United States’ most rabid volleyball hotbeds is getting a professional team. Omaha businessman Danny White and musician Jason Derulo announced that they will launch a Pro Volleyball Federation franchise in Omaha during the league’s inaugural 2024 season. White and Derulo announced their new venture on social media. Derulo, who performed prior to Super Bowl LVII, has 11 platinum singles. White is a seasoned entrepreneur and a founder/CEO of City+Ventures.

“This is another special day for Pro Volleyball Federation,” said Dave Whinham, a founder of Pro Volleyball Federation. “The reaction we have had since announcing the launch of the league just over ten weeks ago has been phenomenal. We always knew we wanted a team in Omaha, and we knew it would take a special ownership group to live up to the huge potential of the Omaha market. We know we have found that special group and are so excited to see what Danny and Jason will do to undoubtedly make Omaha a flagship franchise in our league.”

White and Derulo have numerous common business interests, investing in companies across a wide span of industries. White is also a close associate of the Burrow Family, which in its own right has deep ties to the state of Nebraska. Jimmy Burrow, Pro Volleyball Federation’s Director of Brand Advancement, is a former football player and coach at the University of Nebraska and Jamie, Jimmy’s son and Joe Burrow’s older brother, is a former All-Big 12 linebacker for the Cornhuskers who still resides in Omaha. Both Jimmy and Jamie helped to recruit White and Derulo to Pro Volleyball Federation.

Have they given any indication where this team will play? Only places I could imagine are Ralston or Mid America Center.

No idea if this will work or not. Women's pro sports generally have struggled. But, decent volleyball market.

Also, interesting how much they go out of their way to refer to Danny White as a billionaire. When the discussion comes up of people in the area with wealth, the name Danny White doesn't really come up locally or nationally. He kind of came out of nowhere with City Ventures, but I always find it interesting when people throw out billionaire with him. He'd be about the quietest billionaire that I know of.

Not to get too off topic, but is Danny White a billionaire? When did that happen? Are his assets directly tied to the myriad City+Ventures businesses and projects?

On the volleyball front, it will be interesting to see if this flops or not. Ralston could be a good venue to see how they perform.

I feel like picking the right markets and the right location within those markets will be really really key to getting good attendance. I wonder if getting big names or former college stars and marketing them will have any impact on attendance too.

What does pro volleyball in Omaha mean for the state?

Professional volleyball is coming to Omaha in February 2024. Musical artist Jason Derulo and Omaha businessman Danny White are co-owners. The only other announced host city is Grand Rapids, Michigan, but the league says it expects eight teams will be part of its inaugural season. Derulo put out a call for name ideas on social media on Monday night.

I have a hard time believing he's a billionaire. But, the release from the volleyball league called him "billionaire Danny White" multiple times. They were really trying to pump that up. Also, I know that internally in his company, they've referred to him as a billionaire. But, he doesn't really have that standing in the community or nationally. He's not really a factor civically, for the most part. If he's a billionaire, he's the quietest billionaire that I know of and in a city that doesn't have too many of those to go around. And yes, most of what he has is tied into City Ventures from what I know of.

I'd also agree on Ralston being the best fit.

here's what I can come up with. Feel free to add to it.

Really not that many failed ventures over the course of 8 decades since the Civic Auditorium/Rosenblatt were first built.

Hockey
Omaha Knights
Omaha Aksarben Knights

Baseball
Omaha Cardinals
Omaha Dodgers
Omaha Royals/Storm Chasers

Pro Football
Omaha Nighthawks
Omaha Mammoths

Outdoor Soccer
Union Omaha

Indoor Soccer
Omaha Flames
Omaha Vipers
Omaha Kings
*There was a team at the Civic Auditorium in the 1970's, but I cannot locate the franchise name

Arena Football
Omaha Beef
Omaha Bears (Mid America Center after being proposed at Qwest Center roughly 2005)

Basketball
Kansas City/Omaha Kings
Omaha Racers

Volleyball
Unnamed Omaha team

Former Nebraska administrator named president of Omaha pro volleyball team
Nebraska Pro Volleyball named a former University of Nebraska-Lincoln administrator its president and an Omaha arena as its home court on Thursday.

Diane Mendenhall will be the Omaha-based pro volleyball team's president, while CHI Health Center was named the team's home court.
I think I assumed home matches were going to be held at CHI, but nice to get confirmation. That's 8 homes matches to add to CHI's schedule. Thinking about it more, would these matches be better at Ralston Arena?

Ralston Arena? Nah. Omaha is a volleyball crazy town. I’m glad it’s CHI. It’s Omaha’s only premier league sport. I’d buy season tickets. Vamanos!

Love the energy. I am being a hypocrite because I am wanting Union Omaha to be downtown as well instead of Werner. Yeah, I am with you now; CHI, or any downtown location, is the right choice and I hope it does really well.

The two that have been announced are the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, capacity 19,500, and the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, capacity 11,500.

I haven't seen it in writing, but I believe I heard on 1620 that the season tickets started in the $175 range. Isn't it eight matches? If so, and if the starting price is accurate that is not bad.

Wow...thanks for the info. I had no idea this was even in the works. Really dig the team name and can imagine a lot of Oasis music at their games. Anybody else think it might not be too much of a stretch to say this may become the most successful pro sport in Omaha? Now if Union can only get their game downtown too.
