Listened to Jacob Bigelow on Sharp and Handley. Not a ton of new information. Nebraska is standing pat on their roster. Only thing that might change is if someone finishes summer school and is eligible as a grad transfer.

They are in final preparations/practices for their Spain trip. Now practicing with the multi colored FIBA ball.

Cornhusker Classic Schedule announced, it's being done by the Gazelle Group. Any idea if these tickets will be included for season ticket holders or if university will be more involved in promoting this? Interesting that other teams will host part of it but all of Nebraska's games are at home as the big name school in it:

The Nebraska Cornhuskers will host Duquesne, Stony Brook, and Rider in the Cornhusker Classic, a three-game round-robin tournament that will take place from November 13th to November 22nd, 2023.

The Cornhuskers will host three games at Pinnacle Bank Arena: November 13th vs. Rider, November 15th vs. Stony Brook, and November 22nd vs. Duquesne.

In addition to playing at Nebraska, Duquesne will host Stony Brook on November 13th and Rider on November 17th. Rounding out the schedule, Stony Brook will play Rider at home on November 20th.

Nebraska returns five of its top eight scorers from a team that went 16-16 and won six of its final eight Big Ten games in 2022-23. All-Big Ten performer Keisei Tominaga headlines NU’s lineup which also features three other players who made at least 12 starts last season: Juwan Gary, C.J. Wilcher and Jamarques Lawrence. The Huskers welcome in a five-member class which features transfers Josiah Allick (New Mexico), Rienk Mast (Bradley), Ahron Ulis (Iowa) and Brice Williams (Charlotte).

Duquesne is building off a 20-13 season that culminated in a post season appearance in the CBI. Leading the Dukes on both ends of the floor, star guards Dae Dae Grant and Jimmy Clark III look to build on the success of last season.

Stony Brook adjusted to their new home in the Colonial Athletic Association and advanced to the second round of the conference tournament. With a strong recruiting class, headlined by Fairfield transfer Chris Maidoh and Long Island native Andre Snoddy, the Seawolves look poised to take another step forward this season.

Rider finished the 2022-23 campaign with a 16-14 overall record and a 13-7 record in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, finishing second in the regular season standings. Rider returns 2022-23 second team All-Conference selection Mervin James, who averaged 12.9 points and a team-high 6.8 rebounds per game last season. Starters Allen Powell (10.4 ppg.) and Tariq Ingraham (6.4 ppg.) are also back for the Broncs.

Full non conference schedule released:

A pair of matchups against Elite Eight qualifiers, a neutral-site matchup with Oregon State and a three-game Cornhusker Classic in Lincoln highlight the 2023-24 Nebraska men’s basketball non-conference schedule released Wednesday.

The 11-game non-conference slate features a trip to Manhattan, Kan., for a matchup with Kansas State on Dec. 17. The Wildcats went 26-10 and reached the Elite Eight before losing to Florida Atlantic. It is the third game of a three-year series with the Wildcats, and the Huskers’ first trip to Manhattan since 2011.

Nebraska’s only other trip in non-conference play is on Saturday, Nov. 18, when the Huskers travel to Sioux Falls, S.D., to face Oregon State. It is NU’s second trip to the Sanford Pentagon, as Nebraska defeated Oklahoma State in the 2018-19 season. The Beavers had one of the nation’s youngest teams in 2022-23, as more than 50 percent of the team’s scoring came from freshmen. This will be the first meeting between the two teams since 2009.

The nine-game home schedule features the annual matchup with Creighton on Sunday, Dec. 3. The Bluejays, who return three starters, went 24-13 and reached the Elite Eight before losing to San Diego State in the final second of regulation. The Huskers won last year’s meeting in Omaha, 63-53, picking up their first win over Creighton in Omaha since 2004.

Nebraska’s nine home non-conference games is the most since also having nine in 2021-22. The Huskers have been in the top five in the Big Ten in non-conference schedule in two of the past three years, including last year where NU’s non-conference SOS was third among Big Ten programs.

Nebraska will open its season with four straight home games, beginning with the season opener against Lindenwood (Nov. 6). NU will also host Florida A&M (Nov. 9) before taking on Rider (Nov. 13) and Stony Brook (Nov. 15) in the first two games of the multi-team event. The third game of the Cornhusker Classic is a Nov. 22 matchup with a Duquesne team that won 20 games, finished sixth in the A-10 and played in the CBI last season. The Dukes return three of their top four scorers from last year, including All-A-10 guard Dae Dae Grant (15.5 ppg, 4.6 rpg and 2.5 apg) and A-10 Defensive Team member Jimmy Clark III (12.2 ppg, 2.3 spg).

The Duquesne game is the first of four straight games against teams that won at least 20 games last year. The Huskers will take on Cal State Fullerton on Nov. 26, as the Titans won 20 games before losing in the Big West title game.

NU will close the first part of non-conference play with Creighton before playing its first two Big Ten games. The Huskers will resume non-conference play at Kansa State (Dec. 17) before playing host to North Dakota (Dec. 20) and South Carolina State (Dec. 29).

Start times and broadcast information for the Huskers’ non-conference games will be set later this summer.

Nebraska will also have one home exhibition game, as the Huskers will host Doane on Sunday, Oct. 29. Fans interested in purchasing 2023-24 season tickets can join the season ticket request list at Huskers.com/Tickets. Last year, NU had just five home games in non-conference play, including the Battle in the Vault event.

I tend to agree with this. If the Huskers had something like this last year, probably make the NIT:

The Huskers weren’t that kind of team then, and they’re not now. They’d take a NIT bid in 2023-2024. They’d throw a parade for a ticket to the bigger dance, sure, but let’s not be pollyannish about those prospects quite yet. NU needs to win, period, before the annually-brutish, 20-game Big Ten slate. And this non-conference schedule seems designed to accomplish that.

Yes, two Elite Eight teams — Creighton and Kansas State — sit on the 11-course menu. The third power-conference team on the slate, Oregon State, advanced to Elite Eight in 2021 and is on the third year of a reset after that Elite Eight team left campus. The Beavers return four starters and have the look of a NIT squad.

Interesting to see NU hosting Duquesne in the Cornhusker Classic. There's a big connection between the two basketball programs. Former NU coach Danny Nee also coached there. He coached the Duke's after leaving Nebraska, from 2001-2006. The program has not been good for a while and it didn't go well for Danny either.

With two open spots still to fill for the 2023-24 season, Nebraska made a surprise addition on Sunday. 2023 Erie (Pennsylvania) Keystone Athletic Academy forward Matar Diop announced his commitment to the Huskers. The 6-foot-9, 210-pound native if Dakar, Senegal chose NU over Arizona State, Seton Hall, Ole Miss and others. Nebraska offered Diop, who boasts a 7-3 wingspan, earlier this summer, led by assistant coach Ernie Ziegler. Diop played with the NBA Africa program, where Ziegler was a former coach and has strong connections.

The Huskers now have one available scholarship for the 2023 class.

Wow, I did not see this coming. Had no idea we were even recruiting him. At least based on who else was after him, that looks good.

Just listened to Jacob Bigelow's spot on Sharp and Handley this morning. Sounds like Matar Diop is still pretty raw but they said he's an athletic big man that runs the floor well and is athletic. Won't have a big impact this year but does provide depth.

Also, he won't be making the Spain trip.

Huskers will be shorthanded for three exhibition games in Spain

Nebraska will get its first live look at its 2023-24 roster during its upcoming foreign team trip to Spain. Unfortunately, the Huskers will be notably shorthanded for their three exhibition games during the nine-day tour. Head coach Fred Hoiberg said Monday that his team would be without at least five players from its projected game rotation while in Spain.

Guard Keisei Tominaga (Japan) and center Rienk Mast (Netherlands) will be representing their countries at the 2023 FIBA World Cup. Forward Josiah Allick and center Blaise Keita will be out as they finish up their recoveries from offseason ankle surgery.

Ulis, according to a criminal complaint filed by the Johnson County Attorney’s Office Tuesday, allegedly used his older brother’s information to disguise “approximately 1,850” sports wagers.

“Over 740” of the 1,850 bets were placed before Ulis turned 21, the legal betting age in Iowa, according to the court document. The alleged wagers totaled “over $34,800.”
The complaint alleges at least one wager was on an Iowa sporting event, and “over 430” were on NCAA-sanctioned football and basketball games.

I would not bet against you. This is just crazy. I didn't see it confirmed but one post on Twitter said he was doing some of them before he was even legally old enough. He was in contention to start and was definitely going to be at least in the rotation.

In that article it mentions other Iowa athletes being in trouble for gambling. I remember their were suspensions on the baseball team during the season.

Iowa State is having issues as well. Saw on the SportsCenter ticker last night that the projected Iowa State starting QB is being held out for this as well. Sounds like he got a lawyer to fight it.

Wonder if any of this over this all related or with the same outfit taking the bets? Will be interesting to see if this becomes a widespread in college athletics. Hopefully the compliance guys in Lincoln and elsewhere are making this a priority to educate the athletes on.

A Nebraska men's basketball transfer has been charged in connection to an investigation into illegal sports wagering. Ahron Ulis is accused of placing approximately 1,850 online bets, more than 740 of which were placed before he turned 21. The alleged total amount wagered was over $34,800, with "at least one" wager placed on an Iowa sporting event.

“The University of Nebraska Athletic Department administration was made aware this summer about a potential issue regarding the eligibility of men’s basketball student-athlete Ahron Ulis. Since that time, we have been in communication with the NCAA regarding this matter and Ahron is not participating with the team on its trip to Spain,” Nebraska Athletics said in a statement. Ulis announced his decision to transfer from Iowa to Nebraska in May. A total of seven players from Iowa and Iowa State have been charged in connection to the investigation, including standout Cyclone quarterback Hunter Dekkers.
