As I’ve mentioned, Since May 1st, I committed to not eating fast food for 3 months..In the process, I’ve lost 30 or so pounds and feel fantastic..
Ciao..LiO…Peace
That's great! I hear when people abstain from fast food long enough, they no longer tolerate it like they did, so your fast food hiatus might lead to a long term healthier diet.
I personally haven't felt the need to abstain. I haven't had trouble with weight or chronic diseases *YET*, though usually I eat it in moderation. Last time I had any fast food was Monday. So maybe, on average, once a week. Although I do get on kicks when I really, really like some item.
I really don't think I'd be able to go without it AT ALL.

I appreciate that. Most of my life, I’ve always eaten fast food in moderation. But over the last couple of years, for whatever reason, I started falling into the habit of eating it 2 to 3 times a week, and I really started to feel like sh!t. A by product of that was also the weight gain. So I’ll be going back to fast food again next month, but back to eating it in moderation..which usually for me, has always been maybe 2 to 3 times a month.. and at my age, that’s a good sweet spot..
This all said, I’d recommended you try the Arby’s Wagyu beef burger. I thought it was pretty good last year. You may like it a tick more than I did…

Thank you gentlemen ..
Next week, there is a large order of Runza Crinkle Fries with my name on it, lol…
Ciao..LiO…Peace
This begs the question... What will be your dipping sauce(s) and or sides? I've always heard ranch is the best for Runza fries, but I never bought in. I've dipped in chili, or a shake of any flavor, or good ol ketchup.

The honey mustard from the chicken tenders is pretty good fry dipping sauce.

It’ll likely be my 2 favorites- either Ketchup or Ranch. I’ll likely alternate between the two. But I never, ever “double dip” (I am not a fan of that by the way and it’s a pet peeve of mine). Dipping fries in a shake? I never have. I’ve known people who do. Same with yellow mustard..
For fries, I’ve always been either a ketchup (sometimes I’ll sprinkle some Tabasco into the ketchup)or ranch person. If I have neither available, I usually just eat them plain…
Also begs another (probably already answered) question... Favorite fast food fry? I mean when they're at their best.
When they're at their best, I absolutely love Taco Bell's nacho fries with the nacho cheese sauce. It's just such a different iteration of the typical potato.
Other ones that stick out for me are curly fries from Arby's, of course Runza fries, and Bronco's fries. Then if I just want a plain but good fry, McDonalds sometimes gets it done.

I don't get the love of the Arbys curly fires. Many people love them, but even at Arbies, I will almost always take the reg fries I Don't go often though, so not a decision I have to make regularly.

I agree. Arby’s potato cakes were my jam- then they made the horrible and puzzling business decision to discontinue them. Their curly fries are “okay” and their crinkle fries are “meh”..
Fast food Best fries- Runza Crinkle fries followed by Bronco’s…

I was going to mention Culver’s. But I agree, the last couple of times I had their fries they were “meh”..
I will say, as Busguy mentioned, the nacho fries at Taco Bell with the nacho cheese sauce for dipping are really good too…
I've turned into a bit of a starch hater. Most times I get a meal I don't want the fries (or the rice or the hash browns or whatever). Lots of times I've been in a full service restaurant and finished eating and my fries are still piled on my plate and I'm always annoyed that I paid for them and don't want them. I really feel like EVERY restaurant should offer entrees without side(s) for a couple of dollars less. It's easier at fast food restaurants as you simply don't get the combo.
Now, if a place is taking raw whole potatoes, cutting their own fries, and cooking them up in-house then I am usually a sucker for those as they're just so darn tasty. There's just no competition between fries made in-house and the frozen junk that arrives on the Sysco truck. (Assuming they know how to do it right and aren't serving me flaccid fries tasting of raw potato).
Five Guys cuts them in house last time I went there. They do literally nothing to the potato before frying. I've heard their fries being raved about, but of the couple times I ever had Five Guys, I don't recall them being that great. Maybe they've changed, too. Despite Five guys being well within my roaming area, I've only been twice, and not in probably 10-15 years.
One thing I've wondered... Does anybody remember how McDonalds fries were when they fried them in beef fat? Do you remember it being a big difference? Did they announce they were going to stop using beef fat? Was there an uproar about it? I kinda wish I could go back in time and try them myself. Apparently they stopped in 1990.
Five Guys fries are good if you get their Cajun fries and ask for them to be extra crispy. That said, Five Guys is a bit spendy for what is essentially fast food. I also find I have to ask for Stella's to make my fries extra crispy to get the texture I expect. It seems whether you parboil or pre-fry or neither that made in-house fries just need a little extra time in the fryer.

I do. McDonald’s used to fry up their fries in Beef Tallow..and due to the uproar over that perceived unhealthy cooking method, they changed in 1990 and since, use a “Canola Blend Oil”. They also add what they call “natural beef flavoring” which is all synthetic..
With what we know today, the Beef Tallow used prior to 1990 is actually a healthier method of preparing their fries compared to the unhealthy method they use today. McDonald’s should switch back. Their fries used to be great..
In April, I had fries at McDonald’s for the first time in quite awhile. They were a soggy, over salted mess. I could only eat about 10 fries before I threw them out. They were awful..and that unfortunately is not surprising these days when it comes to places like McDonald’s or Burger King…

Whilst on the subject of Mickey D's, they used to be renowned for having the best fountain soda, per a survey. Almost immediately after this was made public it went to Helena Handbasket. Diet Coke tastes like there's bleach innit.

It's funny you say that as my wife and daughters all feel the exact same way. I mean I like ranch, but not like how they like ranch.
I had a next door neighbor that managed Runzas for about 20 years and he told me the "secret" to making a good-tasting ranch (like theirs) is to use buttermilk. I'll pick that up occasionally at the store and use it with the bulk ranch powder I get at Sam's Club and they say it's right on par with Runza. The good is buttermilk is relatively cheap; the not so good is it seems to go south quickly once you open the cap, so it doesn't last too long.

It’s not surprising..
Places like McDonald’s and Burger King- which were actually good back in the 70’s, 80’s and into the 90’s have completely jumped the shark. Especially the last 20 or so years..I’m old enough to remember when these places were good..and it’s a shame to see what they have devolved into today..
One last thing, Runza’s Ranch is fantastic.. So is their French Onion dipping sauce. Both are actually really good with their crinkle fries…
Who are even the fast food candidates that have onion rings? I know Broncos does, BK (they are terrible), Runza. Wow I guess I completely disregard onion rings even though I love them. I can't remember the last time I had onion rings.
Onion rings? Meh, lol. Not my preference..And not enough fast food joints offer them and those who do, pretty much suck at it..
Onion rings are sports bar food imo..or even pizza joint food. I’m not a fan of Big Fred’s pizza..but they do make some really good onion rings..Don & Miles is the only fast food joint I know of locally that makes decent onion rings. Runza makes them, but they’re average. I recommend Runza Crinkle Fries for the ultimate fast food French Fry experience..at least in the Omaha area..Broncos next…
Freddys has onion rings. I’d put them as somewhat better than Runza, but not as good as Don & Millie’s. They are also something that’s pretty good dipped in the Freddys fry sauce.
whataburger and sonic have onion rings, I think they are good. Also A&W and Culver's, both of which aren't bad. Maybe not great, but not a poor onion ring. I like Runza's onion rings, but I prefer onion rings in a beer batter rather than breaded

When Grandmother's was around, my wife would eat the heck out of their onion rings. It'd make sense that Don/Millie's would continue the legacy.
For me, my onion rings need to be battered not breaded. That is, I don't care for the rough crumbly onion rings. I like the smooth battered ones. Unfortunately, battered onion rings seem to be a full service restaurant thing. Most of the fast food restaurants serve the breaded ones. Meh.

I completely agree..
Battered rings are so much better..and the only fast food place I know that consistently does them well is Don & Mille’s. Excellent battered rings to me are mostly found in sports bar/pub (and pizza) spots. Omaha Tap House, for example, has excelled battered rings…

So I had noticed a BBQ bacon pretzel burger at Freddy's. Not much of a Freddys guy, but BBQ burgers are right up my alley, so I had to try. In all, pretty good. It's not much special, just patties, bacon, onions, BBQ sauce and some sort of pub sauce on a pretzel bun. I didn't even look at the cost beforehand, but the burger with fries and a drink was almost $14, yikes. But oh well, I'd say it was worth the try. Probably won't be getting it again, but at a better price, I'd say it's a winner.
Also, been seeing ads for Arby's hushpuppy battered fish and fries. Doesn't really pique my interest, especially given that their fries aren't good. But interested in hearing opinions of those who do try it.
It’s now been 3 plus months since I last had fast food (and 35 pounds lighter to show for it)..about to go back into a moderation fast food cycle- for me, that’s about 2 times a month..
Trying to figure where I’ll go. Burger King and McDonald’s are out due to both places being flat out awful..
Minus those 2-
I’m contemplating Runza, Bronco’s, Don & Millie’s, Taco Bell, Arby’s, Freddie’s etc..Where should I have my 1st fast food meal in over 3 months?..

Of your list, I'd go with Broncos or Don & Millies. Of course, get what you like, but I'd keep it light.
If I personally was breaking a fast food fast, I'd probably get a pork tenderloin sandwich, small fry, and small shake from Bronco's. And lots of water and a double dose of probiotics lol

First off, Congratulations, Lou! That is flat out fantastic. And I think you have shown by example one nearly sure fire way to trim off the pounds. Stay the heck away from places that specialize in fried food. It’s like eliminating added salt or sugar or colas from your diet. The first week is the hardest. But after your body loses its cravings it gets much easier.
Congrats! I'd say a simple Runza with fries would be the move. I feel like anything too fried or greasy would send your body into shock after so long abstaining!
