So, that sandwich comes with just pickles. I like to doctor it up. I'll ask for it with onions a lot of the time, and almost always put mustard on it, sometimes ketchup. And if I'm taking it home, I'll make it gourmet by using dijon and putting leaf lettuce on it lol. Sometimes I'll put BBQ sauce and onions to make it a hickory pork tenderloin. It's actually a very versatile sandwich.

This poses the question to you and all, what relatively "original" fast food sandwich or other item do you doctor up if you have the opportunity, and what do you do to it?

The one that comes to mind is the original chik fil a sandwich. Although I rarely get that, it's very versatile, especially with all the sauces they have to offer. You can make it into anything. One of my favorites that I haven't had in a while is the spicy deluxe with an added sweet chili pack.

I’ve been eating their Pork Tenderloin sandwich for years. It’s what I usually get when I go to Bronco’s. I just order the regular sandwich. You can get a Deluxe version that I think comes with onions, tomatoes, mayonnaise, ketchup and pickles..

Like I said though, I just get the regular sandwich and ask for extra pickles on the side with 3 packets of mayonnaise (not Miracle Whip)- and I’m good to go…

That kind of surprised me. It always seemed fairly busy. Sometimes extremely busy. Not sure if Church's opening west of hit finished it off, or staffing issues. They always seemed a little short staffed for the amount of business they did.

I'm also surprised at this. Although I've always thought getting into that McDonald's and KFC right there is a PITA.

Very few LJ's in Omaha... I think this might knock it down to only two. I agree it's greasy as F... but on occasion I like it. Pretty soon I won't be able to get it! LOL

What's even more surprising to me is BKs seem to continue to stay open. The one on 178th & Center in front of Target had one of their drive thru lanes closed for years. Half the time you'd drive by it looked like their lights were off by 7-8pm. They definitely had trouble staffing it. But now it has the new drive thru screens like McDonald's and both lanes appear to be open again. I never go inside so I don't know if that looks any different. In the past it seemed like the only people that would go in and sit down were 80 year olds who still read the printed newspaper and drink their senior-discounted coffee.

I imagine if BKs are seeing an influx of reno dollars they must be coming in from corporate - I know back in the day the majority of the BKs here were owned by Simmonds but I thought he sold them off years ago (maybe back to corp)?

Speaking of food joints, looks like Subway was just purchased by the same company that owns Jimmy John's.

I imagine in the big picture they won't really impact one another too much - I feel JJ's marketing push is delivery. I can tell you that most of the Omaha JJ's have been ripped online with poor reviews.

I swear I didn't even know it was there all these years despite driving by its location 1,000 times. lol It's like my brain refused to see it. I finally saw it by accident and thought, "I haven't had BK in forever, let me go try it." It was disappointing. The manager working the register was nice to me, but downright hostile to the guy in line after me.

Honestly, I also don't know how the IHOP near 84th & Harrison stays open either.

I’ve noted that the LJS on Saddle Creek has been advertising an all you care to eat Sunday deal for I believe $13.99.
I only eat LJS once or twice a year, and it might be interesting to check it out. If only to see who else might be coming in to dine on that special.

Yeah Canes has been there for some time. Church's is much more recent. Maybe combination of the two didn't leave room for a third.

I do think it's probably a 2 parter. Competition and poor management/staffing issues. When I went inside to order it always appreared they were 1 or 2 people short (and this was even pre Covid) and somewhat chaotic in how they were working, along with communicating with customers. Had some long wait over the years when I ordered and just learned to expect it. They'd rarely be up front that things weren't going smoothly and then have to deal with customers who's wait times weren't set at ordering. Preemptively warning people I think would have taken some of the stress out of that place.

I haven’t been to the new Church’s yet..I used go to Church’s now and again black in the day when they had several locations in Omaha back in the early 1980’s.. I’ll Need to check it out at some point…

Went to one on the Kansas side of KC. Second time to a WH, first was in Florida. So far not disappointed in WH. Price is right for greasy, tasty breakfast food. Omaha seriously needs some WH's. We could use some cheap breakfast food downtown, say by the 13th street exit? Anyway, they don't franchise to the genpub, so unless someone from Omaha/Nebraska has connections with WH top brass, I don't think we'll get one anytime soon.

The chain has been around long enough that if they wanted to expand further north and northwest they would have done so decades ago. I just looked it up online, there's 15 locations in the KC area plus one in St Joe. Had no idea there were that many down there. Headed to KC/Lawrence next week so might have to hit one.

It's been a few years since I went to one. I liked it. The weird thing was, the actual waffle I had was just ok. Everything else was good. Was expecting the actual waffle to be something special.

If you lived where there are Waffle Houses then you probably have a Waffle House story. It's part of the collective nostalgia. Also, since there are none in Omaha it falls under the "you always want what you can't have" psychology. (Once upon a time people were clamoring for IHOP's return and were ecstatic when they opened. When was the last time you heard anything positive about IHOP?)

For many years Coors would not expand their market area, for fear it would destroy the cachet of drinking Coors Banquet. Finally in I think the late 1970s they decided to add Nebraska and other Midwest states to their sales area. Omahans were overjoyed at the news! Then a year later absolutely nobody cared and most went back to their old beer purchasing habits.
Or consider the dog chasing cars. Once it caught one it discovered it wasn’t worth chasing all those years.
