The existing marina on the north end of Lewis and Clark Landing has been restored, but perhaps you're referring to the lagoon surrounding the fountain, which we've been told over the years would be impossible, most notably, the flood threat, logistics of a 'hole in the levy', railroad right of way.
The lake being connected to the rest of the river is a pipe dream with not chance of ever being reality. The lagoon in Heartland of America Park is right around Elevation 980'. In the Summer the Missouri River is right around 965'. So the river already sits 15' lower on average. I'm going to guess the lagoon isn't even 15' deep in most spots. Can you even picture what the lake would look like if it was sunk an additional 15' from where it is today?

Right now the river is running about 15' Deep, but in the past three years its been has high as 34' and as low as 4', that's a 30' swing. Can you imagine Heartland of America Park needing to withstand a 30' swing in the river.

So it isn't' practical, and never has been. Also the marina we do have on the Riverfront looks bad most of the time as is.

I learned a lot, especially all the projects that are going on outside of downtown. I didn't know that the strip mall to the northwest of 114 and Dodge was being renuvated. I used to frequest a music store and the large sports bar in that area.

great video Brad! I'll say again how glad I am that they didn't half donkey these parks. The only hinderance to this opening weekend is just how hot it will be. My kids already cannot wait to be down there to check them out

We are also so excited for the remaining parks to open! My oldest took up roller blading earlier this year because he saw the skate ribbon at HOA. That's what I am most interested in seeing, if there is an even bigger influx of people enjoying the parks and riverfront. GLM has very kid/family heavy (not that adults without kids weren't enjoying it) with the new playground and slides area being a big attraction. Now there will be volleyball, dedicated bocce/horseshoe courts, skate ribbon, gondolas (are those back? One of Brad's photos was a sign for "Boat Launch"), etc. that cater to non-children aged people. The heat is a big deterrent this weekend, but we will be there at least in the first couple weeks!

I go to GLM often and the heat is not a factor to most parents sitting in the open sun with no shade, as they watch their kids splash in the water. Getting sun bathed is good for your vitamin D3 levels and sweating is a form of detox.

Also, GLM is active in the morning and after sunset as well; for people that are too sensitive to heat, that is nowhere near that of Texas and Florida heat.

This weekend it is going be like Texas and Florida heat....heat index of 105+ with temps around 100.

I am eager to check out the park, and might go down in the evening, but if we wait a week or two, it will still be there.

The parks will be there yes but there is no doubt that the ribbon cutting and the events/concerts lined up on its opening, will be special events.

Kids are busy having fun, splashing and no crying and whining that can be seen or hard because the park has plenty of fun things to do.

Maybe some kids are raised differently in mostly being indoors and electronic devices but my nephews are eager to play outside and whining about weather is not one of them.

I honestly have gotten more whining from older relatives that eat poorly and thus have low energy, with chronic conditions vs my older relatives that eat healthy and have high energy and no chronic conditions.

The new Heartland of America and Lewis and Clark Landing parks, will inspire many to get moving and better their health, give kids plenty of activities to do; so that we can reduce hospitalizations and chronic conditions that affect our quality and well being as a society.

Renovator's idea that if you "eat healthy", walk around outside and don't use electronics, you can solve or prevent any health problem (genetic or not) and even get rid of chronic whining is laughable.

My wife has Celiac Disease and eats very healthy (organic produce, no red meats, etc.), goes to the gym daily and is walking on average 10,000 steps a day, but still has low energy due to Hashimoto's Disease. These are both genetic autoimmune diseases. smh

That's an oversimplification, it is obvious there are many additive factors that contribute to health.

I would want to go deeper in how those conditions can be healed, without falling into the cycle of symptom mitigation via lifelong prescriptions that cause a host of secondary undesirable effects, but this thread is only meant to touch base in areas relating to the Heartland of America.

I'll see your insult and raise you this: my kids aren't slaves to electronics. They play basketball, soccer, football, golf, band, baseball, summer camps, afternoon clubs, and get about a half hour a night of tv/electronics. But hot is hot. I don't know if you have children, but they will play outside and ride their bikes all the live long day. When it's 100 with a heat index of 115, they get hot, tired, and cranky.

We plan to take them there this weekend, but it will be in the morning or evening when the metal isn't 130 degrees. Maybe educate yourself on real life before spewing your agenda at everyone when it isn't warranted.

I specifically said "some" kids are raised differently, it shouldn't be taken as an insult; as that is a fact. As for your kids, that's great that they are active and they for sure will enjoy the Heartland of America park.

Fair enough, you should know that this thread is not meant to be a deep dive on health other than the Heartland of America park and base topics around the subject.

All, I can say is that my grandmother has experienced the effects of Hashimoto's. Until, she attained knowledge on how to take care of herself naturally; would she abandon her synthetic petroleum-based prescriptions, be energetic with no pain and have her doctor wonder what she was doing to have a proper working thyroid again. She is no longer a profit statistic for the medical and pharmaceutical...

Still, having places to walk, especially with the Riverfront parks, River's Edge and the bike trails being laid out in the council bluffs side, are creating a network of activities. So far, it has been impressive to see the GLM alone attract people of all ages and demographics, consistently.

Agreed. Nice pics. Looks great, especially at night. Can’t wait to get to the reopened Phase 2 and Phase 3 components to our Riverfront Redevelopment plan. Phase 1 has been a smashing success; no doubt these added components will be too..and also enhance/spur further new developments within our downtown core…

Nice find and thanks for posting :thumb: ..

Funny as I look back, during the Pandemic year of 2020 (which in general, was an oddity of a year hopefully we’ll never experience again in our lifetimes), we had a forum member who posted frequently complaining that nothing was really being accomplished or moving ahead with the Riverfront Redevelopment Plan; and felt the timeline was not realistic yada, yada, yada. His “Sidewalk Supervisor” ramblings were a sense of amusement for me and likely, especially now, an embarrassment for him- as I stated at the time, come 2022/2023, we’ll be enjoying our newly redeveloped riverfront parks, and looking back and laughing at the silliness he posted in the summer/fall of 2020..

That poster has since flown the coop. But-

To steal the old and appropriate cliche- “The Chickens have come to roost”

I've been in the park since the ribbon cutting today and honestly , Omaha nailed it. I am so grateful to all those men and women, that put in their time, money and effort to make these parks a reality.

When a community is raised with good moral values (not virtue signaling), education is well funded, and the police are allowed to keep us safe, great leadership and Mayors like Jean Stothert; projects like these are possible. While other cities that do the oppposite, experience the inverse...

Great turnout for the ribbon cutting. 3 quick speeches and then ribbon was cut. The busiest area this morning seemed to be the playground, and why not its super cool.
